17.01.2022 After all the craziness of today’s world the wine doesn’t stop. It may not be selling now but we sure are making it in hope of a regeneration! 2020 shiraz viognier being pressed today ready for some time in barrel. Looking bloody awesome . Vintage 2020 is going down as one of the best! Traditionally in the northern Rhone of France, particularly in the rocky slopes of Cote Rotie, viognier (white grape) is added to the shiraz (red grape) in a very small amount to add colour and aromatics. Sounds crazy adding a little bit of white to your red but it seems like it’s working well for us. This wine will be pressed to some amazing new oak for maturation for 18 months.

08.01.2022 So the end of vintage 2020 happened today. Last harvest for the year was our Truffle Hill Cane Cut Riesling. What does cane cut mean you might ask? ... Well, my Riesling vines are cane trained each year which means a fresh cane is trained onto the trellis each year rather than leaving the existing cane to develop. It is traditionally called a cordon which you would see in most vineyards once developed (the big thick arm that runs horizontal on the trellis). This means that we can cut off these canes each year for retraining next year, hence the term cane cut. Some people think we add cane sugar to sweeten the wine but it’s a natural process - fun fact, adding other sugars to wine is illegal. The fruit which is now separated from the vine is allowed to dry up in to sultanas. Basically dehydrating the grapes (or desiccate would be the winemaking terminology) to reduce the water content which intensifies the sugars. Harvest today involved picking juicy, honeyed grapes with an intense sweetness by hand. There was sticky jam like hands fighting the bees for the fruit today, it tasted like sweet marmalade I have won many accolades with this dessert wine including top 100 at the Sydney international wine show and 7 trophies over the last 10 years for best sweet white at the regional wine wine show - including this year again Best shared with friends over a cheese board after dinner 20% off all wine, free delivery for orders over $100 https://www.trufflehillwines.com.au/
