04.01.2022 Heat pumps are an absolute game changer. Like LED’s were to halogens, so heat pumps are to conventional heating & hot water. The best heat pumps are up to 5 ti...mes more efficient than their conventional counterparts. But while lighting is only 7% of the average bill, space conditioning & hot water between them account for almost 2/3 of all the energy used in the average home. So what we choose has a drastic effect on the efficiency, the energy bill, and the carbon intensity of the homes we build. How do you know what to choose? The magic letters to look for on the specifications are C.O.P (Co-efficient Of Performance) for heating, and EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling. The higher the number the better. A COP (or EER) of 1, means the heat pump is 100% efficient. That is, it uses 1 kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy, and transfers 1 kWh of heat from the outdoor air to the hot water tank, or to the house when heating. A COP of 2, means twice, or 200% efficient. A COP of 5 means, 500% efficient. It can have these miraculous efficiencies because it is not making heat or cool like conventional units, it is just shifting heating from one place to another. Whatever heat pump you choose - single split, multi split, ducted, hydronic, or for hot water - look for one with a COP or EER >3. Not only will owners be amazed at their energy bill, but if you put on some solar, they will likely start approaching, if not achieving, Net Zero.
