13.01.2022 Most loan brokers I know (including us!) help their clients comb through the choices, choose suitable products, get discounts on interest rates then sort out be...fore and after settlement issues - ensuring clients AREN’T a victim of bank greed. If they’re removed, whose left to watch the shop? I get that some brokers churn clients to improve their bottom line, or write loans with the lender who pays them the highest commission, but most of them genuinely provide the service that a bank wouldn’t give. In the case of Destiny, we became a broker when our clients were continually being given inappropriate loans for their circumstances from banks they approached directly! Before even applying, we assess every loan and lender to match the right loan with every client. Each loan we write involves considerable work to ensure that it is not rejected, collecting and providing all the evidence we know a bank will need, making sure that the initial application is complete and impressive. I can’t count how many times we have stepped in to sort out devastating bank errors delaying settlement of loans and finalising of a property purchase - saving stress and penalty fees for our client. Left to the inefficient, outsourced settlement units of many lenders, I’d say 50% of loans wouldn’t settle smoothly. And the times we have gone back to the bank long after settlement to manage bank errors, or fight for further discounts. Mostly we get our clients interest rates lower than they could get for themselves. Yes, the bank pays us for this via commission - but that commission is usually only just adequate for the efforts we put in - fair remuneration for what is, more often than not, a complex and taxing job. The banks stuff up, and we, the people working every day to protect our clients from those same bank stuff ups, now bear the burden of the punishment. I support tightening regulation around brokers to stamp out the cowboys, but don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
