24.01.2022 Tips to break-through "groundhog day"... Establish a daily routine and make weekends different. Mark your Wednesdays by "breaking the script" of your routine (have dinner with friends via video call, create a family movie night or simply take time out for yourself). Wake-up at the same time every day.... Get dressed and maintain your usual grooming habits (avoid wearing the same sweats and T-shirt three days in a row tempting though it may be). If possible, get some sunlight and fresh air (maintaining safe social distancing). Exercise, in whatever way you can do so enjoyably. Avoid excess news consumption and instead use your free time intentionally doing things you enjoy, fostering a new hobby or connecting with those you care about (be the people you live with or online). 24.01.2022 New research has displayed six minutes of reading effectively reduced stress levels by more than two thirds. The findings by the University of Sussex show that reading a book worked more effectively and efficiently than listening to music, going for a walk or sitting down with a cup of tea. 23.01.2022 Low vitamin D levels have been associated with increased pain and higher opioid doses. Correlation doesnt necessarily equal causation. But, Vitamin D is more than just a "vitamin" its also a hormone, responsible for controlling the expression of over 200 genes. It plays a central regulatory role in many core body functions, including regulating your sleep, mood, inflammation and (indirectly) pain sensitivity. For this reason, you may consider having your Vitamin D level checked. #painlesshealth #trustpainless

21.01.2022 Were very excited to welcome Catherine Yates to the Painless team. With an enduring passion for supporting people whose lives have been halted by serious illness, Catherine integrates occupational therapy with mental health care to support individuals to rebuild meaningful, value-based lives. Alongside a decades experience as an Occupational Therapist, Catherine has a post-graduate diploma in counselling and psychotherapy and a special interest in Acceptance and Commitment T...herapy (ACT). In her words "Acceptance is not about defeat or surrender, nor about living with something that can in fact be changed, improved and modified. Its about recognizing what is present in your life. Pain, suffering, emotions, whatever it might be. Then, looking at your life and making room for it. So that you can do things to stop it overwhelming you. So that you can adjust and rebuild. When people do this, they often find they are able to treat their pain, and it no longer rules their lives." 21.01.2022 Meet the Team Paige Collins, Functional Care Coordinator. As our senior functional care coordinator, Paige specialises in guiding people with pain to uncover the root causes of their pain and become active, empowered participants in their care. In her words, "All the best evidence in pain science today suggests the most effective way to resolve complex pain is to foster your overall health and wellbeing. Resolving pain and creating health are two sides of the same coin. Yet..., most of conventional medicine only looks at one side. Its all pain-killers, surgeries, heat packs and band-aid solutions failing completely to consider general wellness, movement, nutrition, sleep, meaningful activity, social connection, stress management. Of course, strategies aimed directly at resolving pain have their place. But, without also creating health they reliably fall flat." 20.01.2022 "... the fewer social relationships a person has, the shorter his or her life expectancy, and the worse the impact of various infectious diseases. 19.01.2022 "When people suffer musculoskeletal pain that is, pain arising from muscles, ligaments, bones or joints they change the way they move. Sometimes these changes include completely avoiding certain movements, and sometimes they are more subtle. Someone with knee pain might walk with a limp, for instance, whereas someone with hand pain might pick up an object differently, while someone with neck pain might refrain from turning their head to one side. Our brains tell our bodie...s to move differently when we have pain. But there is growing evidence that changing the way we move might actually contribute to the development of pain that lasts for months or years." 16.01.2022 Naltrexone is a medication typically used in high doses to treat opioid dependency. However, when used at an ultra low-dose, naltrexone can provide effective pain relief for a range of complex, chronic pain conditions. Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has displayed efficacy in the treatment of fibromyalgia, CRPS, autoimmune pain and nerve pain (like sciatica), among many other pain conditions. Whats especially interesting about LDN is, due to the very low dose used, the risk of s...ide effects is extraordinarily low (compared to other pain medications). So how does LDN work? Well, present evidence displays two primary mechanisms of action. First, LDN inhibits excess inflammation in the body and brain, which in turns, reduces your pain sensitivity. Second, it increases your brains production of natural pain relief molecules, including endorphins. #painlesshealth #trustpainless

16.01.2022 Neuroception is the process by which your brain receives information about your physical and psychological environment, then distinguishes if a situation is safe, or potentially dangerous. Neuroception plays a central role the generation of pain, both acute and chronic (although its impact on chronic pain is especially interesting, and an important concept for anyone living with pain to understand, and learn to modulate). #painlesshealth #trustpainless

16.01.2022 Most people think of psychology simply as "talk therapy". When it comes to pain, "talk therapy" is only a very small component of the toolkit. Pain psychology is a very specialised form of psychology designed to rewire the neural networks in your brain thereby reprogramming the way your brain perceives threat and, in response, generates pain. #painlesshealth #trustpainless

13.01.2022 "- ". Whole-person pain care is an integration of science, strategy and most importantly humanism. Its about honouring the complexity that is a human being with human needs. 13.01.2022 As he analyzed the areas that fire in chronic pain, he observed that many of those areas also process thoughts, sensations, images, memories, movements, emotions, and beliefs when they are not processing pain. That observation explained why, when we are in pain, we cant concentrate or think well; why we have sensory problems and often cant tolerate certain sounds or light; why we cant move more gracefully; and why we cant control our emotions very well and become irritable and have emotional outbursts. The areas that regulate these activities have been hijacked to process the pain signal. 11.01.2022 When living with serious pain, engaging with the outside world feels impossible. So, we wait. We tell ourselves that once our pain is better managed better controlled then we will begin to engage in life again. But there is a problem with this way of thinking you cannot move on from pain, without moving on. As weve explored in previous posts, recovering from pain requires a series of neuroplastic changes within the brain. Pain pathways must weaken and desensitise, whil...e other pathways pathways associated with positive life experiences, connection, happiness and relaxation must expand and strengthen. These changes cannot occur when our lives are all pain, all the time. Only when we expand our experiences when we begin to re-engage with positive life experiences can we facilitate this process of neuroplasticity. #painlesshealth #trustpainless

09.01.2022 "Medical thinking usually sees stress as highly disturbing but isolated events such as, for example, sudden unemployment, a marriage breakup, or the death of a loved one. 02.01.2022 Living with pain is painful (obviously) but, perhaps even more painful are the losses one experiences along the way. The loss of independence. The loss of meaningful activities, social connection and a sense of purpose. We believe this is, in huge part, the reason medical interventions in isolation so often fall short they can only address the former pain, not the latter. At Painless, we think a lot about what it means to go beyond just resolving physical pain, to foster... genuine health and "wellness". For us, "wellness" is all about taking that next step supporting and guiding individuals with pain to restore a sense of meaning, purpose and connection to their lives. Being Global Wellness Day today, wed love to know, what does "wellness" mean to you? #painlesshealth #trustpainless

02.01.2022 Moskowitz defined chronic pain as learned pain. Chronic pain not only indicates illness; it is itself an illness. 01.01.2022 Meet the Painless Team Megan Moffet, Nutritionist. Megan grew up in the wheat belt of Western Australia moving to Perth to complete her university degree in Nutrition Science. Growing up with a wholesome lifestyle centred around being outdoors and active, eating, growing and cooking real food inspires her approach to healthcare. As a Nutritionist at Painless, Megan prides herself on providing personalised, and approachable, nutrition support for people living with persisten...t pain and inflammatory health conditions. In her words, "When we take a whole-person care approach, we realise just how many systems are influencing chronic pain. From the musculoskeletal system, to the nervous and endocrine system, right through to the gut. Then there are the many psychological and social factors to consider. All these interactions form a complex puzzle that needs to be recognised, unpacked and assessed. My work in nutrition, in understanding foods as medicine, supplements, nutrients, the gut, and the gut-brain-axis, is one part of this complex puzzle."
