25.01.2022 Pleasure in the process. Theres a result you desire. Maybe its weight loss, maybe its to achieve a specific lift or run your first 5k, or maybe its to get off your blood pressure medication. Whatever the goal is, what Im going to talk about applies.... If you or someone you know has ever gone to extreme measures to lose weight Diet pills, surgery, starvation diets, etc the chances are VERY small that they were successful. And if they were, chances are that they couldnt sustain the result. Im going to tell you why They were chasing a result while ignoring the process. To be successful with anything long term, whether its nutrition, weight loss, fitness, business, performance literally anything you have to learn to fall in love with the process. Its not some grand action that gets you to lose 10 kgs. Its the accumulation of the choices you make each and every day the PROCESS that gets you to the RESULT, not the other way around. So if you ever find yourself frustrated with progress toward a desired outcome, be sure to stop and ask yourself are the behaviours Im practising every single day going to lead to the result I desire? The answer should be pretty clear. And if the answer is no, what are you willing to change to make the answer yes? I fully acknowledge that habit change is HARD! 23.01.2022 I DON'T CARE HOW MANY CALORIES YOU'VE BURNT. Not to make it sound bad, but how many calories you burn during a workout really doesnt interest me at all. And heres why... If you want to create a lean, healthy body, you will never get there by trying to burn calories with exercise. There are a few things we can look around this. First, how many calories your watch, fitbit or monitor tells you youve burned is inaccurate. Without knowing a lot of factors that are unique to you, theres simply no way to give you an accurate calorie count. Beyond that though, Im more concerned with creating overall metabolic efficiency. I care about you adding muscle so that you can burn more calories 24/7, in addition to changing the shape of your body, combating age-related decline, and so much more that I wont go into here. Instead, focus on training for intensity and strength. Not only will you change the shape of your body and improve your health, you will no longer concern yourself with calorie counting on inaccurate watches and devices. The truth is that you cant exercise off that donut or slice of pizza. And nor should you. Here at TRX GT, we are experts in helping our clients create maximally efficient metabolisms. 22.01.2022 Winter: COMMITMENT OR EXCUSES? In my years of working in the fitness industry, Ive found there are two types of people: 1. Those who are committed to their fitness routine 12 months out of the year. ... 2. Those who use work, kids, winter and holidays as an excuse to let go. Dont get me wrong, even I love a break from training every now and again or finding time to train with 2 little kids its hard sometimes, but one thing Im conscious of is not falling into the winter trap. Heres the thing. Your body doesnt know its a holiday or wintertime or that youre visiting a resort somewhere. Your metabolism doesnt differentiate. So, if youre using this time of year to drop the ball on your fitness, youre doing yourself a massive disservice. Starting over is hard and discouraging, and Ive never seen anyone start over and feel great about it. So, do yourself a favour and keep yourself on track this winter! 22.01.2022 STAY HUNGRY! When we’re hungry, we’re supposed to eat, right? But is that necessarily so all the time?... Actually, no. It’s a good idea to let yourself get hungry sometimes and to avoid eating right away. It can help you learn the scale of hungry from I could nibble to I want to shove anything edible in my face right now! It can help find the happy medium of being just hungry enough -- staying with the feeling instead of letting it drive us to the refrigerator right away -- and ultimately making more mindful choices about what we eat. Sometimes a glass of water is all we need. Sometimes we’re just stressed when we tell ourselves we’re hungry. Sometimes admit it we’re just bored and grab something to eat reflexively. Fortunately, most of us don’t really know what true hunger is, when the body is crying out for nutrients and energy. We have access to food all of the time, unlike many people in the world. So, if you can learn to experiment with hunger levels, the self-knowledge you gain can help you sustain healthy eating habits and manage your weight. I wanted to remind you as we get ready to head into summer, that a healthy body is the BYPRODUCT of a healthy lifestyle, and that includes the way you eat, train and sleep, sure, but even more importantly its how you think, talk and show up in life. Your body is always in transition and transformation. Trying to force it to be what it was a month ago, or what it may become a month from now or to look like someone else, is a waste of energy. Instead... of forcing it or controlling it, consider allowing it to flow. Manifest the next level of you by being about the life you want to create right now. Youll be happy when you decide to be happy, not when you reach some goal weight, have some dream car, have the perfect house or job or partner. Working on our goals is awesome but its both the reasons we go after them and the way we see ourselves along the way that determines how the experience serves us. You do not need to be anyone elses idea of perfect. You just have to be the best version of YOU See all those things we tell ourselves will make us happy are just shiny objects distracting us from noticing we are HERE NOW. Always we are here now. In a year, well be in that here, and that now. And sometimes we forget to look for all the good things we have here, now, and appreciate them, and make the most of them and be thankful and love the journey we are on, because we get so distracted by what we dont have, life passes us by without being very joyful - and thats the opposite of flow. 22.01.2022 SELF CARE - I talk to busy people and parents all the time that struggle deeply with creating balance in their lives. They struggle desperately with guilt. Guilt of never doing enough.... Guilt of not enough time with kids or their partners. Guilt of not having a clean enough house. Guilt of not being fit and healthy. Guilt of not being enough. Can you relate? So much of the guilt often stems from doing what it takes to take care of yourself. We should ourselves so much that we have intense levels of shame. But the least selfish and most giving thing you can ever do is prioritise taking care of you. Because you taking care of yourself does not mean youre neglecting anyone else. 21.01.2022 Hi Team! Hope you are well and find some time to relax and enjoy your Weekend. What a week! We have now taken the government regulation to reduce our class sizes to 10 participants (including the coach) starting last Monday. This will allow us to keep you safer whilst also ensuring you have plenty of space to yourself for an awesome workout. TRX Strong and Saturday TRX partner workout classes will continue but we will take out the partner work for now and mix up the structu...re so you can expect some new moves and a tough workout! Please book your classes for next week as soon as you can, that way we can keep an eye on potential waitlists and insert additional class options and times if needed. We still continue to follow best practice at this time and we are satisfied that our members are also. Please remain diligent when coming to TRX and continue to look after your health and the health of your fellow TRXers. If you are feeling unwell or are displaying symptoms, please remain at home. We will continue to disinfect our equipment and environment after every session and will continue to do so as long as we operate. We will re-assess and further update you on the next steps if we progress through the government warning levels. If at any stage we consider that it is unsafe for our staff and members to continue we will notify you immediately. Take care of yourself and each other! 19.01.2022 CARDIO VS STRENGTH TRAINING FOR FAT LOSS. Even though knowledge about this important topic is becoming much more widespread, I want to revisit the age-old question: is cardio or strength training better for fat loss? Putting aside other considerations like nutrition, sleep, and stress, here is my answer:... You will burn more calories while you are completing the cardio exercise, but the better overall strategy is to focus on strength training. You see, not only does a pound of muscle burn far more calories at rest (and strength training increases muscle while cardio can diminish it), but the work your body has to do after you lift is far more beneficial to fat loss. As your muscles recover, repair, and grow, your body is burning more, even at rest. So, if you want to become a smaller version of the body shape you already have, cardio is your choice. But if you want to transform the shape of your body entirely while simultaneously losing fat, you absolutely must strength train! Have questions? Were here to help! 19.01.2022 THE MARATHON. When we decide we want something big in life a body transformation, to compete in an athletic event, to start a business, etc., we often WANT IT NOW. Frequently here at TRX GT we have to remind clients that health and fitness, like anything important and worthwhile in life, are a marathon effort, not a sprint or a race.... Patience, persistence, consistency and perseverance will get you everywhere when approaching big life changes or goals. Urgency, impatience, and inconsistency will, conversely, get you nowhere. Can you lose 10 kilos in 1 month? Probably. But 2-3 months down the line things wont look or feel very good. More importantly even, things like pain management, habit change, and improvement of health require a longer effort. It is completely unreasonable to have speedy expectations of goals around transformation. Always be honest with yourself. Do you give up when the results dont come RIGHT NOW? or are you in for the long run when it comes to your health? To have a body you love that stays strong for decades, you cannot race to the finish linebecause there isnt one. So, the next time you feel frustrated by slow progress or find yourself slipping, remember youre running a never-ending marathon. 18.01.2022 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Never eat after 7 p.m. Lifting weights makes women bulky.... All true? HA! All myths persistent suckers that have been around for ages. Let’s have a little fun and break ‘em down. 1. Where did this one come from about breakfast being so important? Maybe back in the farming culture of previous centuries? At least then, people needed a lot of fuel to get them through physically demanding mornings. But nowadays, it’s more important to make smart food choices, pay attention to what you’re eating, and listen to your body than to choke down a big plate of chow with the sunrise. 2. There’s nothing magic about the clock striking 7. Some studies suggest eating a lot right before bed can contribute to weight gain. And the intermittent fasting trend calls for a period of abstinence from food, often starting after the evening meal. There’s different research to support every ideology, but at the end of the day, how late you eat doesn’t matter as long as you’re not in caloric excess. 3. Lifting weights makes women bulky is just crazy talk. If you’ve ever tried to gain muscle mass, then you know it takes a lot of time and effort, plus a great deal of protein, to get bulky. Weightlifting helps everyone stay toned and strong, which is good for metabolism, weight control, posture, and the ongoing ability to carry out daily functions. 4. If you want to lose weight, then you have to do all cardio, all the time. In fact, resistance training and High-Intensity Interval Training are often more helpful to getting rid of fat and staying strong. 5. If you want to lose weight, then you have to starve yourself. You need a caloric deficit, which just means that you’re burning more calories than you’re consuming which just means you should exercise and eat right. Deprivation diets are frustrating, unrealistic and ineffective for long-term healthy weight management. I could go on, but you get the point. Don’t believe everything you hear or read. When it comes to sustainable healthy habits, keep it simple and remember that if it sounds too good to be true or just plain stupid then it probably is!
18.01.2022 HAVE YOU EVER DONE THIS? I wish I had a dollar for every time Ive heard this story. A new client or challenge participant is getting ready to start training with us here at TRX GT.... Theyre nervous but excited to see some results. Its maybe Thursday, and theyre getting started on Monday. We take their weight and measurements, congratulate them on their commitment, high five them, and send them on their way until Monday. Monday they show up bloated with low energy and 1.5 kg heavier. Why you ask? Because they literally binged on all of their favourite and soon-to-be forbidden foods. No joke. Ive seen people create huge setbacks for themselves in the name of not being able to have what they love ever again. And honestly, if you approach any workout or nutrition plan with that mentality, you will fail. Its that simple. Its a harsh truth, but it needs to be told. No food will ever be off limits. You live in an abundant society where food isnt scarce, and anything you want can be yours at any time. There is no all or nothing in health and fitness. It can be as simple as smaller portions, decreased frequency of consumption, or preparing healthier alternatives to your favourite foods. 15.01.2022 THROW THE RULE BOOK OUT THE WINDOW Have you noticed how many diet fads and trends are currently circulating the market? And ask any person who is ALL IN with one of these ways of eating, and their philosophy behind eating that way is nothing short of dogmatic.... And Im sorry, but that is NOT how nutrition should ever be. Because there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to eating healthy. Of course, common sense tells you broccoli is healthier than chipsthats not what Im talking about. Im talking specifically about the dogma of nutrition. Keto is the ONLY way. Intermittent fasting is THE ONLY way to lose fat. Count macros or be overweight forever! These are the kinds of philosophies that are circulating, so I wanted to acknowledge the ridiculousness of it all. If you focus on eating lean proteins, some good fats, plenty of vegetables, and drink lots of waterand you dont overdo it on portions, youre good. Seriouslyit can be that simple. 14.01.2022 PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! This is a really important thing that I want to address today. Its around the commitments we make to ourselves and how were often the first to let ourselves down.... And thats a very dangerous thing. Heres why When you make a commitment like exercising, eating better, going to bed earlier, reading more, or whatever the case may be and you dont follow through, youre re-wiring your brain in a pretty bad way. Seewhen you declare a commitment but fail to keep it, your brain becomes less trusting of you and you become ready to giving up. Essentially, every time you release a commitment or give up on a goal, you decrease your chances of achieving goals in the future. You teach yourself that your word doesnt mean a whole lot. And the worst part is that we are so much more likely to give up on ourselves or abandon our word to ourselves than we are to someone else. Is this resonating? The way to remedy this is by staying accountable to the commitments and goals you set for yourself. Train your brain and your emotions to trust you. Its never too late to make the switch. When you start a program to get healthy and fit, develop better habits, get out of pain, or whatever the case may be, one thing you probably don’t expect is how your mind transforms. Health and fitness can be very elusive, multi-failure, hard to reach for the majority of people. You may have even thought at one point that it’s just not possible for YOU to achieve your goals, especially when under the influence of prior failures.... My first piece of advice is just take the first step. Then the next step and then the next. If you keep taking a step forward, you eventually arrive at your destination. 13.01.2022 I was talking to a client the other day and it reminded me that so many people think that starting or being good on a weight loss journey involves giving up dining out. And that is simply NOT true! Sure, you can control whats in your food way more at home, but it doesnt mean that going out even a few times a week is off the table.... Here are 10 principles that you can easily follow that will continue to support your health and fitness goals: - Decide before you go looking at the menu ahead of time and making a healthy choice can be a game changer. That way, you dont even have to open the menu and face temptation. - Whatever protein you order, make sure its grilled, baked, or broiled. - If youre having an appetiser, choose a salad with vinegar-based dressing. - Order all sauces and dressings on the side. - Indulge in one thing only either a glass of wine or a few bites of a dessert or bread. - Ask for vegetables to come steamed (if possible). - Drink a good amount of water before arriving to the restaurant and when you sit down to curb hunger. - Ask for extras like bread, chips, etc. not be brought to the table. - Dont feel guilty asking for substitutions. - Dont feel pressure to eat all of your food its ok to have leftovers! 11.01.2022 6 WAYS TO BE EFFORTLESSLY ACTIVE IN 2020 Bed Car Desk Car Dinner table Couch Bed Thats a typical day for your average Australian.... We work hard and sit hard. I wouldnt be the first person to tell you that chronic sitting can literally kill you over time. And even if you exercise regularly, not getting enough movement throughout your day otherwise is still very harmful, and Ive experience this first hand. So today, I wanted to share a few ways that you can nearly effortlessly get more movement into your daily life: 1. Always take the stairs (a tried and true method!) 2. Park at the back of the lot so you have to walk further to get into the shop. 3. Use TV time productively whether you stretch/foam rolling while watching your favourite shows or use the commercial breaks to get in some squats and planks 4. Choose standing over sitting when you can 5. Set a timer that reminds you to get up from your desk and move around every hour 6. Meet with friends and family for walking dates rather than lunches and dinners Which of these are you already doing consistently and which are your greatest areas of opportunity? Consistent daily effort with these things can add up to BIG results or detrimental consequences like a longer life or an early death. Lets get to it! 11.01.2022 We’ve always been told that success if about having a goal and reaching it. But here’s the deal about goals. It’s good to have them. And it’s good to pursue them.... But merely reaching the goals isn’t really the point. It’s the steps we take along the way that matter in the long term. We’ve got to enjoy those parts of the process in order to make lasting change. Here’s an example. Let’s say you want to lose 8 KG’s by your sister’s wedding day. Well, you can starve yourself and do ridiculous amounts of cardio and, sure, you’ll probably shed the weight. But after the photos are taken, will it have been worth all the torture? What if, instead, you set the same goal but decided to follow a reasonable plan that would encourage happy, healthy exercise and eating habits? And what if you lost, say, 4 KG’s by the wedding? Could you be happy with that? Of course! In fact, you would have enjoyed your daily life more, including the implementation of those good habits. You’d have been a better friend to your sister leading up to her big day. And you could enjoy a slice of cake and still be on your way to losing those remaining 4 KG’s, if you wanted. 10.01.2022 Snack time can be dangerous. What are you snacking on today? You’re hungry, short on time, and vulnerable to unhealthy, processed food. The next time you’re tempted to reach for chips or cookies, try one of these healthy alternatives instead! 1. Ham-wrapped celery sticks. Dip in whole-grain mustard for extra flavour. 2. Capsicum and guacamole. Look for snack-size portions of guacamole. 3. Hard-boiled eggs. Portable, healthy, simple.... 4. Beef jerky/Biltong. Be sure to read the label and make sure the jerky doesn’t have any added sugar, and try to find jerky made from quality, grass-fed beef. 5. Blueberries with unsweetened, whole milk Greek yogurt. 6. Tuna mixed with avocado and whole-grain mustard. Put it on top of a rice cracker, whole grain bread, or eat on its own. 7. Peanut butter (or any nut butter) on celery topped with raisins is actually a healthy snack! 8. Hummus and carrot sticks. 9. Mixed nuts. Be careful of your serving size -- about a handful is a perfect amount for a snack. 10. Roasted chickpeas. Prepare these ahead of time. 08.01.2022 The #1 thing for changing your body Whether you want to change the health of your body, the appearance of your body, or anything else about it, theres one main thing thats required Its not strict dieting.... Its not workouts that leave you dying. Its not any crazy supplements or pills. Its the thing that most people struggle with when it comes to reaching ANY goal not just body-related ones. Its this unsexy, not flashy thing called CONSISTENCY. Thats right practising the same behaviours and habits over and over again leads to results for better or for worse. If you consistently eat well all week only to binge the entire weekend, you wont ever see change. 05.01.2022 When it comes to health, fitness, and wellness, theres no one size fits all, despite what the many gurus want you to believe. At the end of the day, finding a methodology that will work for you long-term is absolutely key. But theres a very common fatal mistake many people make when it comes to finding a long-term eating and fitness strategy... They get distracted by flashy new ideas. They become program hoppers always in search of more, of better. Im not saying you shouldnt do some testing and find what works for you. Not at all. But I see program hoppers continuing to hop around because they never give anything their all. They might give it 30, 50, or even 80% but never 100% before they decide somethings not for them. Because Jen started selling protein shakes thatll instantly take 3 inches off your waist. Or because Joe found a miracle in cabbage. And suddenly the plan changes instead of giving it enough time to work for you. So, my advice to you is to find something that gets you results supported by an experienced coach so that you dont keep running on that hamster wheel of program hopping. 04.01.2022 THOUGHTS "SUPER FIT" PEOPLE NEVER HAVE. There are specific mindsets that differentiate those who are chronically fit and those who wish to be, and I want to talk about it. This isnt to make anyone feel bad but instead to create an eye-opening conversation that can help you shift your current thoughts to positive ones.... So, check these out and note any differences that you might be experiencing: 1. They dont dread their workouts. Even fit people arent super excited for every single workout, but theres no sense of dread or pain around the idea of exercise. They appreciate what their bodies are capable of and the feeling of getting stronger. 2. They dont put pressure on themselves to suffer through hours of cardio. Unless its personal preference or theyre training for a particular event, fit people know fat loss occurs best with strength training and they have also developed very efficient workout routines that dont require hours of effort. 3. They dont believe in restrictive calorie counting. Because that stuff just doesnt work in the long run anyway. Instead, they find a way of eating they can sustain forever that includes all foods they love and prevents binging. 4. They dont blame others. Whether its blaming a slow metabolism, family members and their diets, busy schedules, or its too cold outside, fit people look for solutions so they can stay fit forever. Because there is ALWAYS a solution. 5. They dont use their love of food or alcohol as a reason theyll never be as fit as they want. They know theres a way to have it all, and theyve found that balance. You see, staying chronically fit doesnt come down to a specific gene or being wired a certain way. Most of us are on an even playing field and are given a fair shot when it comes to achieving fitness its the mindset, consistency and effort that is different.
