19.01.2022 So blessed to be part of a faith community where many of our older people are not sitting around thinking their time to serve and help is over. People in their 90’s, 80’s, 70’s and 50’s were all helping today at our church clean up. They volunteer in our Thrift Shop as well. I was the youngest there today!!!!Hopefully our younger people will see amazing role models of loving and serving others.

18.01.2022 When Alecia* reached out to The Salvation Army for help, she couldn’t look her support worker in the eye. She’d spent nine years with a husband who didn’t allow... her to speak, think or act without his permission. Alecia’s husband was a high functioning corporate worker who physically, financially and emotionally controlled and abused his wife. He kept her isolated in the family home for many years, until he found a new partner and Alecia was moved into the garden shed. After learning her daughter was unsettled at school, Alecia reached out for help. The Salvation Army team organised emergency accommodation, arranged counselling, and connected her with a legal service. Alecia now has a job and is rebuilding her life. November 25 is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, but tragically, many women and girls in Australia, and internationally, remain unsafe in their own homes. Many face emotional, verbal, sexual, financial and physical abuse even the threat of death making home more of a prison, than a safe haven. 08.01.2022 Fabulous weekend at Merriwa Salvos. Saturday night we invited 3 local churches to come together to worship pray for our community. Love that we can be one. And today church was packed (Covid numbers) and filled with life!

03.01.2022 When 52-year old Janet* contacted a homewares rental company to organise a small television for her bedroom, she had no idea it would lead to aggressive upselli...ng, intimidation and a significant debt that would have a severe impact on her health and wellbeing. When she was unable to keep up with the payments, Janet was visited by what she describes as a ‘large bully’ who came to her door demanding her key card to take out the $450 dollars per fortnight that she owed. I couldn’t live. I just could not live. I couldn’t pay my bills. I couldn’t do anything because all my money was going to [them]. After months of struggling and her debt snowballing to over $26,000, contacting a financial counsellor gave her the support she needed to free herself from the debt. That lady is a princess, Janet says of her financial counsellor. She really knew how to talk to them and she knew what they were doing was wrong. I was over the moon thinking ‘wow, there is somebody here that realises and recognises the issues that I’ve been having and am having with these people’.
