12.01.2022 In Australia, the greatest risk of living in poverty is becoming unemployed. In the current climate that we face as a nation, its a scary fact to face. We recently teamed up with the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) and UNSW Arts and Social Sciences for the 2020 Poverty in Australia Overview, Part 2. The report found that: Two out of three people who are unemployed live below the poverty line.... Families where the main earner is female are more likely to be living in poverty than those where the main earner is male. Nearly half of children in sole parent families live below the poverty line. ACOSS is calling for an increase to Newstart, Youth Allowance and Rent Assistance to help the millions of Australians struggling and living in poverty. This change is now more important than ever. 07.01.2022 My name is Marnie and I lead a team at a homelessness residential service that provides support to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We support people living on-site in units and also in crisis houses in the surrounding areas. Everyone we work with is experiencing homelessness for a variety of reasons including family violence, financial pressure, a loss of a job or ill health. Im inspired each day by the resilience and determination of our residents, especially the parents who do whatever it takes to keep some normality in the lives of their children when faced with the stress and chaos of being homeless.
