24.01.2022 As you might be aware, I am a big fan of bodyweight movements and calisthenics. Chin ups are such an integral part of calisthenics but they require SO much strength, so how do you work on them if you can't even do one? . There are many viable options but this is by far my favourite (definitely biased because of my need for strict form). Just make sure your legs are slightly in front of the bar to keep that angle of pull accurate (in a real chin up you must come around the bar...) and pull through your elbows keeping your shoulders down. One last thing, keep yourself honest! 22.01.2022 Workouts?! . I have recently trialled a workout subscription and from this week it has become available to anyone! Workouts will be based on a 6 week theme with the first theme being shoulder stability! There's a mix of injury prevention, muscle activation and strength which all have videos, helpful instructions and a printable sheet to track your progress. . The featured exercise is an inverted kettlebell curl and press. I love this exercise because it's so much tougher than... it looks and it works so many accessory muscles a typical pressing action won't really work! . 19.01.2022 After having her first child, @sweat.now_shine.later_ was having a lot of trouble getting her strength back to where it was. After a quick assessment, we found that she had some unresolved abdominal separation and some hip stability issues, mainly in deep hip flexion. Back to basics she went and to her credit, she did everything she was told regardless of how boring it was! Here we are a few months later and she has surpassed her pre-baby strength levels. Excellent work Ange..., excited to see how far we can take you! Brute strength doesnt always win the battle. 19.01.2022 Let's skin some cats! * *no cats were harmed in the making of this video. . Skin the cat is a brutal exercise which puts your strength, endurance and mobility to the test! I wouldn't recommend this particular exercise for anyone who isn't quite accustomed to hanging from a bar though! Why would we include such an exercise into our workouts? Other than it being super tough, it's a strength-based mobility exercise. One of the problems we have with trying to improve mobility is ...that we do not have the stability to control our joints in a very large range. . Think about the bench press for example: if you go all the way until the bar touches your chest, it's tough. But if you limit yourself to halfway, you'll be far stronger. Don't get me wrong, this is also partially because the movement is smaller but it is largely about having far less strength where your shoulder joint is approaching it's end range of motion. There are many factors at play here but for now, the take home message for you is, if you want strength at different ranges of motion, you'll have to train different ranges of motion! 18.01.2022 Struggling to touch your toes despite stretching your hamstrings constantly? Did you ever think maybe your hamstrings arent actually tight? . @alanacashion1 here WAS the perfect example! But shes been too consistent with her homework over the last week and now shes got full range of motion at her hips in forward flexion again. Alanas problem was that one of her hip flexors wasnt firing correctly and a few hip flexion exercises later, she magically gained about a foot of ...extra range. . The body is not simple and not everything is black and white. My work focuses around correcting and maintaining movement patterns so that you can lift heavier and work harder without worry of injuries. . What use does this particular example have? Whats a strength based forward flexion exercise....deadlifts! Alanas deadlifts will be the direct beneficiary of this little gem, but it will also benefit any other exercise which involves stability in deep hip flexion like the squat. 18.01.2022 Ooh, shiny new things! . Starting next week, we will have two extra classes on offer in the studio. I'm still way too much of a form perfectionist for big groups so they're only small classes but that's just so YOU get more from them. . Bodyweight strength is pretty self explanatory. Making you strong using your own bodyweight to do so. The amount of people who load themselves with weights when they can't even move correctly is astounding. Learn to use your body before you ad...d weight! With the right angle manipulation, your body can be stupid heavy regardless of your weight. It's also going to be heavily based around calisthenics movements so if you have any interest in learning any fancy calisthenics moves, this is where you develop the strength. . Gravity Defying Posture might not be quite so obvious! Essentially it's going to be strength and muscle tone building for the muscles which oppose gravity. Basically, if you have the posture of a 90 year old at the age of 40, your body is losing the battle against gravity. It's a lot more common than you might think and it's also a lot easier to stop than you might think! Get on top of that early with this specific strength class. . Finally we have our dance fitness. Building body control, coordination and fitness while having a great time. This has been running for a while already and is running super smooth as always. 17.01.2022 The step knee drive. . This exercise is great for the beginnings of power training when your knee stability is still worrying you. It's a super stable position with the support beside you and it really allows you to focus on controlling the actions of the stance knee. . This exercise doesn't just have to be about returning from injury though! It's a great glute exercise in it's own right and hey let's face it, we could all use a little extra hip and knee stability!... . 16.01.2022 Time for some real talk. Ruok day is coming up on Thursday so I wanted to shed some light on it's little brother, anxiety. . Anxiety my not seem like a big deal to some but it is a huge predictor in the development of depression. Not to mention that it's also very uncomfortable. These are just some of the symptoms, some people have many more. Anxiety is something I get at times, sometimes relatively severe too and I know I have a family history of depression so this subject h...its very close to home. . If you have an attack of anxiety, try this exercise. Stop what you're doing and perform 10 deep diaphragmatic breaths (belly breaths), really concentrating on feeling each breath. This not only shifts your focus away from your thought spirals but the increased oxygen lowers your stress as the shallow breathing you would likely have been doing starts to build up carbon dioxide. . To further improve your symptoms, exercise is absolutely unparallelled in ability. Lower intensity exercise such as brisk walking has been shown to lower your cortisol levels almost instantly. Higher intensity exercise takes longer to show the effects but has a much larger effect. It also doubles as a use of your stress hormones in the fight or flight system. Personally, a good bout of max intensity sprints takes care of my anxiety and I feel amazing after. . Hopefully these tips help you to manage your anxiety a little better and help you achieve a headspace where you feel comfortable talking to someone about it. Sometimes even just explaining your thoughts to someone is enough for you to see how outrageous your thought spirals have become. Talk to me, talk to anyone in your life. Your feet are c This exercise is a bit of an adaptation to a dance warm up exercise which challenges your intrinsic foot muscles, your medial arch and your ankle stabilisers. .... Create a solid arch by pulling the ball of your big toe towards your heel (ideally without flexing the toe) then lift your heels off the ground while bancing and fighting the urge to let the ankle roll out. This exercise works a whole lot of weak muscles so it might just be a lot harder than you think! Aim for 10 slow reps with a nice full second pause at the top minimum. If you're really game try it single leg... 09.01.2022 People are so concerned with being strong and looking pretty these days that they forget what true strength requires: control. . The dead bug leg lift is a really easy exercise - on the surface. You might look at this and think yeah, I could do 100 of these! But, can you even do 20 without any movement at the pelvis? . This particular exercise is not about building strength, it is about building control. If your pelvis is not under control you will not be using any correct fi...ring sequences for any of your muscles! This is a huuuuge part of why people experience back pain during exercise because an unstable pelvis means excess movement and force going through the back. . 07.01.2022 For all of you with horrendous shoulder control, I call this the floor routine. . It's essentially a one stop shop for shoulder stability which requires only one simple piece of equipment! (Can also use the cable instead of a band). Being in such a controlled position and having gravity work more or less for us makes it far essier to work on controlling the actions. I developed this specific little routine for someone in particular but I quickly found that many others could a...lso benefit from this! During the exercises just focus on control and keeping the shoulders set mostly back and pulled dowm towards the hips. From the beginning: . Straight arm pull down - focusing on pulling through low traps and pressing right into the ground with a pause. . Internal rotations - focus on keeping the elbows still and shoulders stuck to the ground. Note the hands most likely won't touch the ground if the shoulders are truly flat on the ground. . Horizontal extension 1 - focus is between the middle of the shoulder blades here. Think about pivoting around the joint. . Y pull - focus is on control, pulling through low traps and not letting the shoulders rise up to the ears. . External rotations - elbows do not move, shoulders remain pulled down to hips. Back doesn't arch! . Horizontal extension 2. . I usually start someone on very light resistance here with 10 reps, 2 sets. 06.01.2022 Are you getting the most out of your motivations? . I've been working hard on my strength again lately and its so rewarding to see the results. When you create your goals or motivations you have to make sure they're a stable source of motivation. The problem with aesthetic goals like losing weight is that a) they're already negative (emphasis on taking something away) b) weight and aesthetics tend to fluctuate a fair amount and on those bad days, your motivation will too and ...c) once you've lost that weight (pretending for a moment that body composition has no value to you) where do you go from there? Your motivation ceases to exist past that point. Sure, you can create a new goal but your motivation is severely cut. . Try some performance based goals and I promise you, you'll get far better results and you'll still be working towards your aesthetic goals anyway. It doesn't matter what you choose, pick something you want to get better at or you known will push your limits. Just in case you were wondering, 3rd set of 165kg for 10 (I had to swap hand grip half way). 04.01.2022 If you're a cyclist and want to increase your longevity in the sport along with your power to weight ratio, maybe it's time to get off the bike - at least for a few substituted heavy weights sessions a week. . Despite the high popularity, the ridiculous money invested in it and the amount of research devoted to the sport - the average cyclists training regime is barbarically outdated. More time on the bike doesn't necessarily make you a better cyclist. . Heavy weights if pro...grammed correctly, can increase power (Duh, of course - power is work over time)... Without increasing your body weight. It also helps to protect against bone density deficiencies (cycling is terrible for building or even maintaining bone density) and can fix up the postural degradation that cycling incurs. Surely, this should be a no-brainer? . While the authors of this book don't bring up too many new concepts, they do provide a convenient one stop shop to learning a lot about the way the body works and develops with cycling as the main focus. I highly recommend giving it a read, even if just as an interest piece. It would've been far too easy to just skip these today! We had planned on getting 10 done but honestly, at about 5-6, I noticed my body just refused to cool down. I sat in the shade in my rest period and every sprint I continued to heat up so at 7 we called it quits. . He came to me 5 weeks ago with a few things but namely: he couldn't squat without feeling like his knees were going to buckle. Look at him go now! Iain is a testament to what can be achieved through putting up with boring remedial exercises and committing 100% to his training. While a few instabilities still need to be addressed, he can confidently add some squatting back into his training.... Excellent job buddy. . 01.01.2022 Over-active upper traps? . Over-active traps are an easy way to lose function in your lower traps. When the upper trap is active it inhibits the fibres of the lower trap which, over time reduces your ability to activate this muscle. This makes any shoulder movements heavily dependent on elevation at the shoulder for strength and the role of depression gets passed on to pec minor which causes a forward tilt of the shoulder blade. As you can imagine, not great for shoulder mech...anics! . Superman shoulders is a super easy way to start gaining control and a little strength over your lower traps and rhomboids again. Just be sure to make sure the shoulders are back before you pull down or pec minor might still be giving you depression! . I like to go for 5 second holds at about 80% for 10 reps but you can only go that strong in your contraction if you can do it accurately!
