17.01.2022 Got an hour or two to spare on Sunday 11 December? Townsville Chess Club is cooking up another Bunnings BBQ (last weekend we raised $1350!). Help us raise more funds for the NQ Chess Open 2017: were aiming to offer a larger and deeper prize pool across all rating categories, and a lower entry fee. Anyone who can spare an hour or two on 11 Dec between 8am-4pm - contact Lee Whalley or leave a comment below. The only requirement is closed-in shoes - everything else is organised/supplied. 09.01.2022 Hi All, Townsville Chess Club opens again this Tuesday the 24th. Our website has this years event calendar and the schedule is similar to last year. We are avoiding competition games on school holiday nights again this year. Term 1s events are as follows:... 24th Jan - Opening night and sign on. 31st Jan to 14th Mar - Townsville Chess Club Championship. 21st Mar to 28th Mar - Townsville Chess Club Lightning Championship. Also this year there will be no prize money for the Tournaments. This has allowed us to lower the membership & entry fees for events. New membership fees are as follows: Adult: $220. Life: $200. Pensioner/Student: $150. Junior Chess on Saturday this year. Lastly there will be another announcement regarding junior chess events once the final paperwork is done. The meetings will be at Annandale Christian College on Saturday mornings with junior only chess tournaments. Saturday meetings will be during the school terms but not during school holidays. Membership for these events will be on a per term basis but will also cover attendance costs at the Tuesday meetings for that term and the school holidays meetings at Pimlico on Tuesday nights. 09.01.2022 Congratulations Hossein - a great end to the tournament year!

08.01.2022 2016 End of Year Report by Dave OShaughnessy Its been quite a big year for the club, with increased membership, an expanded NQ Open, a new Facebook page, a few appearances at the Cotters Markets, some media presence (including local ABC radio and the Townsville Bulletin), an updated website, a new club logo, and a couple of successful Bunnings sausage sizzle fundraisers (the funds from which will make a big difference for the next NQ Open). So thanks to all who played a par...t in 2016 (on and off the board) and made the year a good one! Congratulations must go to our 2016 club champion Ken Stark, who cleaned up the tournament with a nearly perfect score of 5.5/6. Congratulations also go to Hossein Ghodosi and Mark Vucak who both shared player of the year with consistent tournament entry and equally strong performances. Acknowledgement must also go to Charles Fotinos, who has just stepped down as treasurer after many years keeping the books in order and the ship afloat. For the coming year we are of course looking forward to the NQ Open, but also to some new initiatives such as official club events for juniors (to be announced), junior chess afternoons on Saturdays, and also the possibility of making club payments online (eventually there will be something in the online shop). We will also see club membership fees reduced next year, as tournament prize money (for regular club events) has been voted out. Thats all for this year, except for this message from Gza Marczy (Maroczys Christmas card with the score of the Muzio Gambit which he won from Chigorin in the Vienna Kings Gambit tournament of 1903).

05.01.2022 Townsville Chess Club is pleased to announce the Townsville Junior Chess Club. Starting on the 11th of February we will be hosting junior only meetings at the Annandale Christian College Out of School Hours Care Room. Meeting times are 10am to 12 noon and the events will run during each school term. Full date listings are posted here http://townsvillechessclub.org.au/juniors/ and there will be more information on each weeks events coming soon.... Each term will have a rated swiss style tournament and some other tournament variants to keep it interesting. We will also offer game review and analysis and will give help to each member to improve and learn. Cost will be $20 each term and member will need to also join the CAQ. That can be done at the CAQ website or we can help with signup.
