19.01.2022 Why you should be adding facepulls to your program Even if youre throwing in plenty of upper back work into your strength/powerlifting training program, youll almost always end up providing a disproportionate amount of stimulation to your anterior plain (Bench muscles = chest and front delts) this is mainly because we have such an emphasis on the bench press and most powerlifters/ gym junkies tend to train bench at a higher intensity/ volume then our posterior chain. (b...ack muscles, rear delts, rhomboids, lats etc) In combination with other postural issues that many of us cant avoid these days (such as sitting at a computer all day with our head and shoulders hunched forward), this gradually causes the shoulders to roll forward protracted and out of optimal position. This position can cause an unstable shoulder joint, which can easily lead to all kinds of issues like rotator cuff injuries, shoulder impingement and elbow/bicep problems. So, not only will adding face pulls into your program add muscle size and strength to your rear delts and upper back, but it will also help to externally rotate your shoulders and pull them back into the proper position for better posture and decreased injury risk. check out the youtube video below to learn how to perform a face pull.

11.01.2022 Why do powerlifters take such long breaks between sets ? Are they just lazy One of the most important effects of training intensity is the effect it is has on recovery, particularly in-between sets. The heavier the load, the more stress we place onto our immediate energy systems. Although this may not lead to fatigue as many people classically see it, such as being massively out of breath, sweating and in borderline pain. The rapid and full activation of muscles required ...at these intensities places huge demand not only on a vast number of muscles in the body but also the system that activates them, our nervous system. It is for this reason that despite strength sports having less overall energy requirements in terms of calorie expenditure than other higher volume resistance or endurance training, rest intervals between sets will likely be several minutes in order to successfully hit all your lifts at these intensities. So if you see powerlifters taking long rest breaks its not just because they are lazy although some of them might be lol

02.01.2022 Specificity and strength sports Strength sports like powerlifting and weight lifting give us an easy road to specificity training as the required movements for training are basically the same patterns as competition. The main variable is going to be the ratio of load to repetition range. Which becomes a balancing act between loading the nervous system vs bringing up weak points and creating the necessary muscle hypertrophy. ... As we increase our repetitions the stress shifts from the nervous system to different energy systems that cause different stresses and have different recovery demands and adaptations. When we think about bodybuilding for example, the energy systems involved lead to the increase in lactic acid in the muscle, the amount of load placed on the muscle in each repetition is lower than a 1RM but the overall amount of work performed is going to lead to more muscle breakdown and force with proper recovery, an adaptation which is muscle growth. This is why training at purely heavier loads will develop nervous system and movement efficiency, but training with moderate loads and higher repetitions leads to muscle growth. The table below is the repetition maximum rep guide we use measure and set the load to repetition ratio to hit the strength sport sweet spot. It is important to note that this is more of a continuum rather than a distinct cut off between rep ranges and that many strength programs will have cross over with muscle growth. For example, on the continuum, the classic 55 powerlifting program is actually going to develop a good bit of strength and some muscle growth. However, we need to consider that if this was the only way we trained, then we miss out on the specificity of training at close to 1RM for our nervous system and movement pattern programming. So for a powerlifting meet, we would still need to consider doing an appropriate amount of specific work at the right intensity. So our main away should be when we program for maximal strength training/competition. We need to use both lower and mid to slightly higher rep ranges to ensure our nervous system and muscles are both getting the appropriate stimulus they need for adaptation. Although Im sure we all know that one lifter who just seems to max out everyweek and go home
