20.01.2022 2021 NSW Hopes Camp What an excellent effort with 44 players under 12 joining us for the inaugural NSW Hopes Camp at the Nam Ho Table Tennis Academy. Our coaches, Hongbo Liang, Paul Zhao, Soyeon Kim, Joe Qiao, Wei Li and Nam Ho ensured all the participants were fully involved and enjoying the experience.... A big thank you to all the parents and coaches who supported us in this effort. A special thank you to David and Alice Lee for their donation of masks and water. We should not forget that students from the Paul Zhao Table Tennis Academy made up over 50% of the participants. Great work Paul. As the Camp doubled as a coaching camp and a Hopes Selection trial Table Tennis NSW is providing some assistance to players who came either first, second or third to attend the National Hopes Camp in Melbourne in April. It was excellent for the participants to be able to see Alex Lee, our number 1 Junior player, and aspire to that level. The winners in very closely contested round robins were Daisy Xie and Leonard Piyachai,. The runners up were Sophia Zhou and Ethan Lill. Third place getters were Lily Zhang and Nathan Chan. Our inaugural State Hopes Championships have been an unqualified success and we look forward to continuing it in 2022. Link to TTNSW News Article: https://www.ttnsw.org.au/news/2021-nsw-hopes-camp/

07.01.2022 Chris Yan wins Australian Senior Player of the Year Award Olympian and dual Commonwealth Games representative Chris Yan capped off a stellar season, winning Table Tennis Australia’s (TTA) Victor Barna Memorial Trophy as the Australian Senior Player of the Year. The award and title is the highest honour for an Australian senior player and is awarded annually based on performance and results, combined with an athlete’s conduct.... Within the period of assessment, Yan continued his momentum of rock solid performances at the national and international level, including remaining undefeated throughout the 2020 Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament for Teams, and winning two crucial matches in the final against New Zealand to ensure Australia achieved maximum quota places for the Tokyo Olympic Games next year. Yan also won the Australian Olympic Qualification Tournament, earning the right to represent Australia in both the Men’s Singles and Men’s Teams events in Tokyo. Having never won the prestigious award before, the Rio Olympian said receiving it was an honour. Winning this award means a lot to me because 2020 has been a tough year and because I worked so hard throughout 2019 to prepare for the Olympic Qualifications for both the Team and Individual events, Yan said. The Individual Qualifications were very hard for me from the beginning. I lost two matches and tried so hard to come back and winning means a lot. TTA Chief Executive Officer Scott Houston said Yan’s performances were outstanding, but it is also his also his attitude amongst his teammates makes him deserving of the title. Chris has proved through his performances that he is worthy of winning this award, but I’d like to also commend him on his leadership and contribution to team spirit,’ Houston said. While 2020 has not been the year anyone expected, Chris still showed his potential with some incredible performances earlier in the year and I have no doubt we’ll see him go from strength to strength ahead of the Tokyo Olympics next year. Under normal circumstances the assessment period would have been from immediately after the 2019 National Senior & Youth Championships, until completion of the 2020 National Senior & Youth Championships. However, with COVID-19 causing the cancellation of the event this year, TTA and the National Selection Panel determined that presenting the award at the end of 2020 was the most appropriate way forward. 06.01.2022 REPORT ON 2021 NSW COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The Country Championships is a team’s format has been run in NSW, at many different venues for a number of decades. On Saturday and Sunday, 29 and 30 May, the biggest ever event was held at Niagara Stadium Gosford, where the event has been held in recent years. Sixty-four teams played on thirty-two tables in what was a most successful event. The ever-present threat of Covid, which saw the event cancelled in 2020 along with almost all s...porting events, did not dampen the attendance or the enthusiasm. The standard of play was high with teams coming from as far afield as Lismore to the North, Kiama to the South and the ACT to the West. In total there was about 240 players in the event. The event was played in 10 divisions with six teams in each of 8 divisions and eight teams in each of 2 divisions. In the six team divisions, each team played the other 5 teams, 3 matches on Saturday and 2 matches on Sunday. In the eight team divisions, each division is divided into 4 teams and those teams play each other on Saturday with the top two teams from each half playing each other on Sunday for the top places. The bottom two teams from each half played each other for positions 5 to 8. Each team match takes about 4 hours to play with 9 singles matches and 2 doubles matches. There are generally 3 players in each team, but a team can have up to 5 players. The winners and runners up were: Division 1: ACT 1 from Illawarra 1 Division 2: Coffs Harbour 2 from Armidale 1 Division 3: Penrith 2 from ACT 4 Division 4: ACT 6 from Central Coast 3 Division 5: Coffs Harbour 3 from Port Macquarie 3 Division 6: Armidale 3 from Illawarra 3 Division 7: Coffs Harbour 4 from SUNS (invited team from Sydney) Division 8: Kiama from Port Macquarie 5 Division 9: Penrith 7 from Newcastle 7 Division 10: Port Macquarie 6 from Newcastle 8 Annually, in conjunction with the Country Championships, the Dave Beaumont Award is presented to a country club member who has worked tirelessly for the betterment of table tennis. This year the Country League Committee selected Jennie Hall from Gosford (CCTTA) and Rob Beaumont, Dave’s son, made the presentation. Jennie has not only been the Treasurer of her Club for 18 years but has contributed to the growth of table tennis at her club and the success of its activities and events. 05.01.2022 Ping Pong Is Great For The Brain & Could Help Prevent Dementia Super-agers that’s people whose biological age is lower than their actual age should consider taking up the game of ping pong. Apparently table tennis is the perfect activity to keep you happy, healthy, active and in good spirits.... Why? Well, it doesn’t only keep your body fit, it keeps your brain fit. All that complicated hand-eye coordination works its magic with brain cells and helps prevent dementia. The game is one of the fastest racket sports, requiring muscle and cardio endurance. You need nimble footwork and upper body flexibility to return balls that come towards you at 60mph, demanding faster response times than tennis or badminton. While the energy expenditure needed is about the same as archery or bowling, skilled players use much more, said Alessandro Moura Zagatto, a sports physiologist and researcher at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil. He calculated that their workouts were comparable to moderate rowing. But ping pong’s unique visual and spatial demands, strategy and energy may offer benefits for the brain too. A study of 164 Korean women aged 60 and older showed that table tennis improved more brain function than dancing, walking, gymnastics or resistance training. Other research suggests the game mayease symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. "The great thing about our sport is it can be played by anyone, said Jimmy Butler, a four-time national USA Table Tennis Association champion who overcame a debilitating muscle condition in his20s and 30s to reclaim the title at age 44. I see 90-year-olds and 10-year-olds. If you want to give it a go, choose clothing that doesn’t irritate the skin so look for silk or organic cotton. Women need a sports bra, and trainers should be cushioned and supportive. Concentration and mindfulness will help keep your eye on the ball.Don’t get distracted by shouts from your opponent or stray balls flying wildly from other tables.Stay focused. Keep alert to spinning balls. Don’t rush to attack. If you’re prepared to stick with it, your coordination and stamina will improve. You may even win the odd game, then a few more, and soon you’ll be playing doubles.Keep a water bottle nearby as you’ll be sweating, and sip water between points. Stop when you’re tired and give yourself a pat on the back. You’ll feel so good you’ll find you don’t want to give up ping pong.
