11.01.2022 What do you think?

11.01.2022 On Friday, you could buy a bunch of stuff you really like the look of for a (probable ) discount... or you could buy nothing. Because it's Buy Nothing Day, ...the international day of protest (it started in Canada in 1992) against consumerism. This doesn't mean you're protesting against buying all stuff ever. It doesn't mean you're agreeing to never buy anything again. It's protesting on a particular day against being sold to, marketed at, persuaded that we need bigger / better / more, and acquiring stuff for stuff's sake. I like to celebrate Buy Nothing day. It's a chance for me to flex my 'no I don't need it' muscle, and to practice refusing to be sucked in by marketing. Companies spend a lot of time, money and effort trying to persuade us we need things - and it can be challenging to resist. But after all, consumerism got us into this mess - the mess where we trash the planet, warm the earth, steal resources from other people's lands, don't pay workers and makers properly, and then chuck most of what we buy into landfill anyway within 6 months - and if there is one day that makes sense to protest it, Black Friday is that day. It's not easy to say no when you're being sold to everywhere, all the time. It feels like this week every business I've ever bought anything from ever (including software and work stuff) has sent me a sales pitch (or shown me a sponsored ad). I'm sick of it and it's not even Friday! But for me, it's important to make a stand on Black Friday and not buy anything. (I'm pretty sure most companies are going to extend their sales anyway , but we need that feeling of scarcity to make us buy. It's a marketing tactic - and it really works.) For me, Black Friday will always be Buy Nothing Day. Thanks to everyone who is choosing to opt out today, and to businesses who have decided not to succumb to pressure and offer discounts, or who have chosen to close instead, and those who are pledging to donate any profits from sales they make today to charity. Thanks for being the change. See more
