25.01.2022 URGENT FOOD RECALL Please read the information regarding an urgent good recall.
24.01.2022 OLDER DOG TOPIC 5: Im a little more stressed and nervous these days! Im not as sharp as I wasI get confused a little now, I have forgotten some of the house rules and I feel more anxious. Senior dogs often have a harder time handling stress. Simple things that were not issues before may become issues. Such as separation anxiety, interacting with other dogs, visitors coming into the house, new noise phobias, or just more agitated or irritated than usual. Your doggo ma...y have become more clingy or may want to be left alone more often. A loss of cognitive ability is common in older dogs. He may forget simple things like how to navigate around an obstacle and not recognize people that he knows. He may even have bathroom accidents or simply start to bark at nothing in particular. These symptoms can have many causes including pain, so its important to have your Dog checked out for medical issues no matter what. If your dog starts to act strangely or has behaviour changes, he should be checked by a vet to be sure of the cause and that the right treatment plan is put in place. You can help reduce anxiety and stress in your older dog by keeping floors free of clutter, ensuring you have no slippery surfaces in the environment or where you walk your dog, taking your dog for more frequent short walks or playing games or food puzzles to increase his mental stimulation. Ensure that you dog has extra space away from strangers and kids, keep a constant routine such as breaky and dinner time, walk time etc. Be more patient your dog hell always be able to pick up on your mood or energy no matter how old he is, so aim to keep your energy calm, patient and loving. 23.01.2022 DAY TWO: OLDER DOG TOPIC 2: My body is changing. Eek! My skin is dry and thinner my coat has become coarse and it takes longer to come out when the season changes. And my nails dont wear down like they use to! Theyre preventing me from balancing properly and they get in my way when we go walking. I need a little extra care with grooming these days!... Older Dogs experience skin, coat and nail changes, and its important that we give our best friend a helping hand with more regular GROOMING. Your older dog might not be as likely or able to groom like he used to. Its important to increase how many times a week you brush out your dogs coat and help him stay clean and feeling great with recommended shampoos and conditioning treatments. Grooming, scratching and massaging is a great routine to get into. Not only will you be more likely to notice any bumps, lumps or strange changes, its also a wonderful bonding opportunity. Because your dog is less active your dogs nails will not file down of their own accord like they use to and may become more brittle. More frequent nail trimming is required to ensure they are balancing their weight equally on each limb. If youre not comfortable trimming your Doggos nails make an appointment and bring your dog in for a regular pedicure. If you need advice on skin and coat changes give us a call to discuss options for skin and coat health.

23.01.2022 OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT 5 DAYS WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU 5 THINGS YOUR OLDER DOG MIGHT TELL YOU No one on earth will love you more, be more patient, make you smile as often or keep your secrets better than your dog. One of the hardest things about having a dog as a family member or as your best mate, is watching them age relatively quickly compared to us humans. Most dogs enter their senior years at around 7 years old. A little sooner for larger dogs, certain breeds or ...if your dog has poor confirmation or health issues. As senior Dogs begin to slow down, they may gain weight more easily and their senses may start to dull. Your older Dogs behaviour will give you plenty of hints as to what she needs. If your older dog could talk, here are 5 things she might say to you. TOPIC 1: Food Glorious Food. TOPIC 2: My Body is changing. TOPIC 3: I am in Pain. TOPIC 4: I am now feeling the cold more than ever. TOPIC 5: I am more stressed and anxious now. OLDER DOG TOPIC 1: Food glorious food! Its simply my most favourite thing in the whole wide world apart from being with you my human. But I just cant handle as many calories as I use too, and the extra weight makes it harder for me to get around. OBESITY is one of the main health issues for older dogs. Weight gain can cause many health issues and one of those is Osteoarthritis. Not only does the extra weight put pressure on the joints, the adipose cells in fat have been proven to increase inflammation within the joint. Inflammation causes degeneration of cartilage cells which then leads to a more severe onset of Osteoarthritis. Dogs that are over-weight are far more predisposed to an early onset of Osteoarthritis, Heart Disease, Diabetes and Liver Issuesjust to mention a few. The reason older dogs tend to become obese is not only because their energy level and activity decreases but also because their daily calorie needs shift. Their bodies just cant burn calories the same way as when they were younger. So over time they gain weight. You may find its time to make a diet change more suited to senior dogs, which have fewer calories, more fibre and protein and less fat and carbs. Minimise treats that your doggo gets throughout the day and if you are playing games for mental stimulation for your dog, ensure that this portion of food is included in your dogs daily food intake. Check out any other potential food sources like other family members sneaking little snacks and treats and if in a multi animal household your older pooch could be nicking food from his pack! Give us a call at the clinic to discuss dietary changes and options to help point you in the right direction. If you would like to start one of the amazing 4cyte they are available to pick up OR we can post them directly to your letterbox! How convenient!

20.01.2022 First tick of the season. Please make sure your pets are up to date with tick prevention. It can cost up to $2500 (for the more difficult cases) without after hours/emergency care or treatment. If the paralysis is severe, your pet may require mechanical ventilation and this can cost up to and sometimes over $10,000. It costs $1800 to have you dog on tick prevention for 10 years or $1400 for your cat over 10 years. PREVENTION is CHEAPER and BETTER than a cure!
20.01.2022 UPDATE COVID-19 Dear Clients, Today we have had an influx of phone calls regarding COVID-19 and how this affects our companion animals. Our goal is not to fuel current hysteria but to keep all of you, our valued clients, informed and manage the risks to you, your pets and our staff.... The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is keeping all Veterinary professionals informed with regular updates regarding COVID-19 and pets. Currently, the primary source of COVID-19 transmission remains human-to-human contact. Currently there is NO evidence that dogs are able to spread this disease to humans or that they can become sick with the virus. The AVA strongly advise that pet owners continue to practice good hygiene including washing hands before and after petting/handling animals as well as there food. If your pet is on long term medication or prescription diets, please inform us well in advance if you need more. In regards to the clinic we are implementing the current protocols: - If you have recently returned from overseas, been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 or have symptoms of COVID-19 we request that you do NOT attend our practice in person - we will happily consult with you over the phone/skype or other means if necessary. - Medication, food and preventatives (Flea, tick and worming medications) can be paid for over the phone and we will negotiate a means of getting these to you. - No hand shaking between staff and clients - If you would like to wait in the parking lot or outside prior to consultations, please let us know. We are an independent, family run business of nearly 30 years and we do not have the reserves to be closed for a long period. We also have staff members who are deemed high risk who continue to work to ensure your pets receive the highest quality of care. If you have symptoms of the virus, have been overseas or in contact with people known to have the virus, we implore you to PLEASE stay at home. As this situation continues to change rapidly and we will do our best here at Tugun Vets to keep you updated. Thank you.

15.01.2022 OLDER DOG TOPIC 4: I am now feeling the Cold more than ever! Brrrrrrrrrrrr, has the colder season come early? I feel the cold more easily now and I need some extra warmth. As you dog gets older, they begin to feel the cold a lot more. Its not as easy for them to regulate their body temperature. The energy your dog will use trying to stay warm on a colder day will make him more predisposed to other diseases. Helping keep your dogs body temperature up will help minimize... joint and muscle stiffness and help ward of other diseases as well. If your Doggo spends time outdoors during the colder months they will likely need a coat to help keep her warm, a nice Cozy bed and more time indoors. Closely monitor your dogs environmental temperature and watch for signs of your dog being cold such as shivering or shaking, whining, signs of anxiousness, seeking places to shelter, hunched posture with tucked tail or lifting one paw of the ground are all signs of discomfort. Make sure you dry your Doggo down if wet, provide a jacket or a sweater, a nice cozy warm bed and plenty of indoor time beside the fire or the heater. See more

In dogs, common signs of anxiety or fear include: Barking / whining Pacing... Scratching Chewing Drooling Panting Urinating and defecating in the house Shaking Digging In cats, commons signs include: Scratching Peeing or pooping outside the litterbox Constant meowing Hiding Fighting Are your pets showing any of these signs? 14.01.2022 OLDER DOG TOPIC 3: I am in Pain. Im sorry I growled and snapped at the little boy from next door, but he just wasnt respecting my space and I cant move like I use to. My hips and knees are painful and I cant get up as quick as I use to. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common diseases in the world not just for our loved doggos but for humans as well. It is a slow progressive disease and by the time we see changes or symptoms in our dogs theyre usually in quite a b...it of pain. Joint pain can cause a number of problems for an older dog from difficulty getting into the car, going down-stairs, getting up out of bed to behaviour changes. Thankfully Osteoarthritis can be treated. In an ideal world, prevention is far better than cure. We recommend 4CYTE for both prevention and treatment of Osteoarthritis. You can give 4CYTE from a young age to ward of joint changes for as long as possible. If your dog has had joint injury or surgery, they will be more predisposed to an early onset of Osteoarthritis. 4CYTE is safe to use long term because its backed by science. So we know it works, its 100% money back guaranteed and super cost effective. Come and talk to one of our vets for the best treatment plan and advice for your doggo.

Here are the most common: Separation anxiety (being alone) Loud noises like fireworks and thunderstorms (the unknown) Changes in the home (changes) A big disruption to schedules (changes)...
