25.01.2022 Happy Floral Friday! We begun our morning engaging with collaging the Torres Strait Flag for Torres Strait Flag Day! As a group, we discussed who designed the flag- Bernard Namok. The flag was designed as a symbol of unity and identity for Torres Strait Islander peoples. The children continue to deepen their understanding of what each colour and symbols on the flag represent. The green now represents more than just ‘land’. It represents Papua New Guinea and Australia. Torres... Strait Flag day holds so much meaning as it also falls within National Reconciliation Week. As part of our reconciliation journey, we watched the Playschool episode, Walking together. The children asked if they could make their own sea of hands as Hunter and Rachel did in the episode. After we made our hands, we went to our front entrance and placed our hands in the ground to represent the journey we have taken towards reconciliation. #connecting2culture #tumbletotskindergarten #culturalinclusions #NRW2021 #ConnectingTheDots #floralfriday #torresstraitflagday
25.01.2022 We spent Mabo Day walking on country at Downfall Creek today. We were thrilled to give Ranger Lisa our Mirror Image of You art work for the team. Then our friend, Fred (89 years young) joined us for a slow amble up the hill. We paused along the way to pick up leaves from the ground or to notice wallabies. It seemed appropriate to connect with the land today as Eddie Mabo’s legacy was Indigenous land rights. On our return to kindy we watched Mabo Day by BTN and the childr...en were able to bring together some concepts we’ve been exploring during the week. abc.net.au/btn/classroom/Mabo-day/1053094
24.01.2022 During Aunty Lee’s visit last week she shared with us images of a humpy (traditional aboriginal home). We revisited this today using Young Dark Emu. We unpacked this knowledge using Uncle Ernie’s Framework and The 8 Ways of Aboriginal Learning. Uncle Ernie says this holistic teaching and learning framework ...allows us to see the world holistically, not just the tree but what goes with the tree. Land, language, culture, at a certain time, at a certain place, and how those... things are joined together. This aligns with The 8 Ways of Aboriginal Learning that is embedded into our program. The children were able to recall and transfer their existing and emerging knowledge of traditional aboriginal culture. #tumbletotskindergarten #8waysofaboriginallearning #uncleerniesholisticframework
23.01.2022 We explored further in Downfall Creek today. We walked all the way to Hamilton Road. We discovered rocks to climb and we even managed a few learning injuries. This kind of play promotes one of Dr Ellen Sandseter’s 6 Risky Play categories play where the children can disappear. The children continue to build their relationship with this beautiful place, choosing to rest here as well. #tumbletotskindergarten #DownfallCreek #nikibuchan
22.01.2022 Tomorrow is the start of our participation in the Brisbane City Council's "Creek Neighbours Project 2020". We are very excited to again be joining the Rangers at Downfall Creek Environmental Center for this wonderful experience. Our first session is the #1 Creek Session where we explore the mini creatures who call Downfall Creek their home. Stay tuned.
22.01.2022 Feeling very loved by my team today on this #EarlyChildhoodEducatorsDay. A beautiful poem including fingerprints from the children and gorgeous tea towel with my spirit animal, the Kookaburra! Thank You to my dedicated team - without them we are nothing! #tumbletotskindergarten
22.01.2022 Tumble Tots is proud to support this wonderful initiative and seeks your support to help community. See the below message from one of our families. My organisation has partnered with a local Elder to make a difference this Christmas by supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families doing it tough in our c6ommunity. It can be as simple as donating some cash or doing your pre-Christmas declutter and gifting some lightly used toys and clothes that your children have ...outgrown or donating surplus sheets and towels. Any funds raised will go towards purchasing essentials such as underwear, clothing, toiletries and school supplies. Thank you for your generosity - a small donation can make a big difference. Note: food hampers these families receive are usually filled with homebrand items. A tin of Milo, a packet of Arnotts biscuits or a packet of Allens lollies etc would be a nice treat to include with a donation.
21.01.2022 We are so very excited and can't wait to see our friends from Koobara Kindy.
21.01.2022 A wonderful morning with Lisa and Catherine from BCC Downfall Creek. Our first Creek Neighbours Project 2020 session today. We explored all the animals that need a healthy Creek. We had to make some modifications due to Covid but regardless it was great to learn more about our Creek ecosystem.
21.01.2022 The finished product...but the process was the most important part! The children wanted to represent their knowledge and understanding of the Torres Strait in these paintings. They have painted Baidham, Dhangal, 3 Waru’s, a few fish, coconut trees and a frangipani to signify all the Floral Friday’s we’ve celebrated at Tumble Tots. ... Ms Cecelia is taking these images home to Thursday Island. We hope the children like them and feel the love and respect #floralfriday #tumbletotskindergarten #culturalinclusions #culturalcompetence
20.01.2022 Continuing our discussions during National Reconciliation Week we watched the Playschool episode Walking Together, which was a wonderful conversation starter. We discussed our Acknowledgment of Country and what it means to us. We unpacked words like ancestors and custodians. We also read Say Yes again which we read yesterday. The children were keen to talk further about why Mandy couldn’t do the same things as her friend. Because it was the law and Because her ski...n is black. This enabled us to revisit the use of appropriate terminology when describing a person. For example, First Peoples or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples. Our discussion guided our thinking towards understanding that someone’s physical appearance does not reflect their culture and heritage. We want our children to not be afraid to ask questions and discuss with their families what they are learning. More than a word. Reconciliation takes action. Having discussions, challenging bias and reflecting together is the only way to make change. https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/actions-for-reconciliati/ #NRW2021 #connecting2culture #culturalinclusions #tumbletotskindergarten
20.01.2022 Checking in our Pollinator Puddle - helping the bees and butterflies in our garden. and The Rangers at Downfall Creek have asked us to help with their Pollinator garden - we are so excited to help care for the creatures at this special place. #DownfallCreek #tumbletotskindergarten #natureplay
19.01.2022 Thanks for sharing Sally - we enjoyed sharing Lyndon’s knowledge with the children. We also explored Duelgum - the story of Mother Eel by Uncle Joe Kirk. So much to learn.
18.01.2022 We love spending time in the garden so the perfect gift for one of our lucky fathers this Fathers Day is a recycled garden bed!! Complete with soil, plants and tools. The children will put their daddy’s name in the hat on Monday and draw out a winner. We hope all our Fathers know how special they are to us.
18.01.2022 Professional Development is a key part of our growth at Tumble Tots. We couldn't do it without amazing services like Milford Lodge who again today provided quality PD with the passionate, Michelle Scheu :Kindergarten, A Garden of Children. We could have listened all day and have left today with some really important areas for growth. Plus the realisation that we as Educators and parents need to fight for the kind of education our children need both in Kindy and at school. ... We were blessed with a guided tour of Milford Lodge from the wonderful team who spend their days in this amazing setting. We are looking forward to some more exciting events; the next one being "Village Ways". Thank you so much to my team who were able to join me today.
18.01.2022 A big Esso to Ms Kym and Physi kids for embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games into our Physi Kids program. Today we enjoyed Kulap and Gorri games and revisiting Tabu Naba. This has been a dream of ours for two years and it means the world to us to build our families cultural competence at Tumble Tots #tumbletotskindergarten #physikids #culturalinclusions #connecting2culture
11.01.2022 We agree. Natures Time - Child’s Pace Outdoors
11.01.2022 Happy Floral Friday We started our day slowly, then got dressed in our shirts from Thursday Island and our handmade shirts. The children sat and thought about the things that make Floral Friday special - clothes, songs, food, language. Outside they made boats and tends to our garden and checked on our pond plants which are starting to regrow. Ms Cecelia told us that Spring time on TI is time to start digging up the gardens, pull everything out and plant Sweet potatoes an...d cassava to grow during the wet season. #floralfriday #tumbletotskindergarten #culturalinclusions See more
11.01.2022 Our new garden bench from Shabby Treasures is looking great. It will be getting a work out on Friday when we garden with Ms Peta.
11.01.2022 An energetic start to our Tuesday with Ms Kym from Physi Kids. Ms Kym has been amazing incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our Physi Kids program. Today she went above and beyond to include Auslan for us. The children already use Auslan and today Ms Kym incorporated signs for fruit and colours. We are so grateful that together we can take steps to being more inclusive in everything we do. #PhysiKids #TumbleTotsKindergarten
11.01.2022 Another great session with Rhyme Rhythm and Sign. We revisited how to sign the different feelings/emotions and learnt some new songs as well. We also learnt the signs for family (mother, father, grandpa, grandma) as we sang Baby Shark. #tumbletotskindergarten #rhymerhythmsign
10.01.2022 Excursion on a Friday - something different! We crossed over to Huxtable Park today to do some tree research. Paper bark trees, figs, River Red Gums and so many more. We collected leaves, seeds and bark to add to our seasonal calendar boxes. So many stunning trees and creatures on this side to be explored #tumbletotskindergarten #natureplay
07.01.2022 So grateful for the nicer weather today. We took care of our 8 Ways Garden added more soil and mulch and giving the plants a good drink. The children’s ongoing commitment to caring for the land is heartwarming. Then it was time to connect - to the land, plants, creatures and each other. We added drawings to our Seasons book. #8waysofaboriginallearning... #tumbletotskindergarten #natureplay See more

03.01.2022 This year has been challenging in so many ways. A Tumble Tots tradition each year is to visit Barambah- Cherbourg. We were finally able to do that today. Thank you to my team; Sally Lawrence (Black Cockatoo) and Uncle Eric, Aunty Jeanette, Aunty Joylene (The Ration Shed) and Kym Brookhouse for making this another genuinely enriching experience. #Tumbletotskindergarten #culturalcompetence #blackcockatoo
03.01.2022 Creek Neighbours Project Session 2 - was totally amazing! #tumbletotskindergarten #creekneighbours #natureplay Thank you so much Brisbane City Council - Downfall Creek Rangers Team This experience reminded us on why we need to conserve our environment. We have such beautiful animals that live in our community and we need to protect them.
