25.01.2022 A holiday cut short means one thing: back to work a little earlier than planned. I’m taking it easy, working when I want to and throwing in some pandemic-friendly adventures with the fam, but I’m unofficially officially back at it for 2021. I’ve got a spot left for February so get in quick. ... Cred: Kate Leamon Description: a flat lay of a colourful notebook and some stationery including pins, a sharpener, pen and paper clip. 23.01.2022 1. Finish a job. 2. Request a review from your lovely client ( I always ask for a Google Bus Review that I can repurpose). 3. Showcase said review across your socials, your website, on pitches and any other platform you inhabit.... 4. Provide prospective clients with the social proof they may need to trust you, to work with you, and to recommend you. Description: an orange background with a review that reads very prompt, great communication, asked the right questions to enable her to write amazing individual agency bios and about us office bio. Would highly recommend Jaclyn. Thank you for your efforts. See more

22.01.2022 I’m a generalist copywriter, but did you know I specialise in property and real estate copywriting? That’s right. I can write about homes, houses, developments, design and everything in between until the cows come home. Just this year, I’ve written:... - A website for a 3D floor planning company - A website for a property developer - A website for a custom cabinet maker - Hundreds of real estate listings - Blog posts for an online auction start up - Blog posts for a custom builder - A brochure for a new boutique development. I love working in this space for so many reasons: it’s interesting, innovative and something that really connects us as humans. It’s also really visual so I get to combine my love of words with my penchant for voyeurism. If you are in the property, real estate or design space and want a copywriter who knows her mid-century and modern, her bespoke and her boutique, and her liveable and luxurious - get in touch. Spaces for February now open. PS. I promise you won’t see the word trendy or funky in any of my copy (unless you ask for it). 21.01.2022 Matt and I worked side by side (virtually) for quite a few months. He has a strong vision and strong values and wanted this to shine through on his refreshed website, so I helped him bed down a TOV, refine some key messages to talk to his multiple target audiences, and flesh out some great copy to help propel his business to the next stage. It’s always great working with someone so passionate about what they do. New site is now live and it looks schmik. @kyabelau

19.01.2022 I just sent off my last piece of work for 2020 and I’m torn between what I should do to mark the occasion. It’s a toss up between a fist pump, a heave cry into my pillow or a pee myself laugh. Maybe I’ll do all three. This year. Dear Lord. This year. I’m way too tired and brain dead to sum it up. But let’s just say, it’s been real. Real intense, real overwhelming, real messy and definitely really rewarding. Aside from a bit of admin tomorrow, I’m out. ... May the end of this circus year be full of good food, good laughs and the people you love. Thanks for indulging my Insta patch. Image: Behance Description: two wrapped gifts. 18.01.2022 For years and years, I’d do everything I could to avoid speaking to prospective clients on the phone. Be it fear, imposter syndrome or negative sell-talk, I just didn’t go there. I’d send emails with what I thought they wanted to see but they were pretty cookie cutter, even with a few personal touches. Fast forward to today (and a much bolder and confident version of my copywriter self) and whatever way a client comes in, I get straight on the phone and have a chat.... Straightaway there’s a rapport (or sometimes not) and they get to know the person behind the glossy headshot. At the end of the day, your personality is your biggest USP, right? And if a client can’t gauge what you’re about, you’re going to struggle to convert. Case in point: get on the blower if you want to have a successful business but also one based on meaningful human connection. 17.01.2022 This week, I've felt like I'm living out John Legend's lyrics to All of Me, except I'm not singing to my supermodel wife and the 'you're' is Covid and this lockdown. This week has been epic. My kids have been incredible. My husband is basically Zoom. And I'm sitting here carving out space and time for a huge month-long project. I can't concentrate that well. I am writing lists left, right and centre. And I feel like I am not actually writing that much. To help me feel ...less maniacal, I've decided to work all weekend (I mean what's a weekend in lockdown anyway?), so I can lower expectations of how productive I am during the week. Also means I can parent when I need to and deliver those 20 billion snack plates. Fellow Victorians, how you coping? 15.01.2022 Last month my relationship with a long-term key client came to a crashing halt, and it rattled me more than I imagined. It was because of a circumstance beyond my control, but boy did it derail me. I genuinely loved the work, so grieved the loss of that. I was shocked and saddened at being mistreated. ... I was panicked at the thought of losing regular and lucrative income. But I've come out the other end now, and I'm feeling better placed, more resolute and more determined than I have in years. Silver linings. Sometimes it takes a hard thud to get off your laurels. Since that dreaded phone call, I've re-written my website, nurtured leads I didn't have the time or headspace to massage earlier, got my feelers out to dream clients and upped my blogging game. I've had coffee catch ups and connected in with good folk. I have a fire in my belly unlike anything I've had for years. I've also reimagined how I want my business to run and done a lot of deep digging when it comes to my business values. In short: I will never work with clients whose values don't align with mine. Yep, I basically got off my backside and out of a comfort zone I'd found myself in. It's been exhausting but so nourishing too. Here's the trumpet blowing bit ----- I have just onboarded two said dream clients, and I am beyond thrilled about it. 09.01.2022 The other day, my dearest mummy (for whom English is her third language) said 'bearbug' instead of 'bugbear'. I corrected her and on we went with our conversation. This has happened hundreds of times over my lifetime. She doesn't know all the English sayings or idioms and wasn't brought up on Aussie vernacular, so wouldn't be across her hard yakka from her hoon (not such a bad thing). And that is absolutely 100% okay. Don't get me wrong, her command of the English lang...uage is better than most. She comes from a line of linguists (my Grandma spoke seven languages), so while she may mix up some of the words, her ability to communicate clearly is on point. I think the same goes for us copywriters. Unless it's pure technical copy, it's okay to not have every word perfectly placed or every logical comma in its precise position. What's more important, to me at least, is to communicate well. To tell stories. To engage. To build a meaningful connection. It's about the balance of good grammar and good communication. Thoughts? Image description: a swirly orange background with a poll that says perfection is overrated. The two options read: too right and truth. See more

08.01.2022 I recently overhauled my website and I want to let you in on a secret: the tech side was the easy bit. Not that I am remotely reducing a web developer's job, but I found the actual copywriting bit heavy. It. Was. Brutal. Writing your own copy - as a copywriter - is a bit like baring your soul at an open mic night. It feels exposing. It feels sacred. It feels laden with pressure to be perfect.... I laboured over each word, each sentence, each page for so long, and went round and round in circles until I felt dizzy. What I came to realise is that my website - like me as a person - is a work in progress. It can be tweaked, updated and revamped as my business continues to evolve. It's my website for this season, but maybe not the next. And that's okay. Lucky for you, I'm much less OTT at writing other people's websites. It feels more organic and natural to tune into other's peoples voices than my own. Drum roll shameless sales pitch..... I'm now taking bookings for July so if you want to tap into my website package, now is your time. Prices hiking up a little EOFY. See more
