25.01.2022 Hi everyone. Firstly, a big, big thank you for liking the page! It is very obvious that there is a HUGE amount of interest in seeing this beautiful and special place cared for - and who better by than the community of Tweed! Here is a summary of where we are at.... Last Friday we met at the site with representatives from Tweed Shire Council. The result of that meeting was that it was decided that the best way forward was to establish a conservation group under Landcare. It certainly looks like we have the numbers for that, and a massive thank you to all who have offered to lend a hand! There are two main aspects of the project - the cemetery itself (weed control and maintenance), and the broader (nearly) 7 acres (bush regeneration). The overriding focus in the cemetery grounds is of minimal disturbance of the gravesites. The cemetery is heritage-listed in the Tweed Local Environment Plan, but not on the state heritage register (yet!). We have a little way to go yet. Hopefully not too long. TSC will be engaging a consultant to undertake cultural assessment of the entire site (i.e not just the cemetery grounds). This will also include representatives from the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council. Stakeholders are currently being identified and are being invited to play integral roles. This includes descendants of those interred, people who have worked on the site in the past, the Tweed South Sea Islander Community, the Tweed Regional Museum, and other people and groups with personal connections and interests. TSC also need to undertake a risk assessment of the trees (mainly Flooded Gums) onsite before any work can begin as many were broken and damaged by the Cyclone Debbie weather event. If anyone has any old documents, records, maps, or can point to places we might find such, please PM them to us or point us in the right direction. Thanks again everyone for helping get this off the ground!

21.01.2022 These hippeastrums that someone planted once upon a moon are doing their thing... but unfortunately there is still no progress to report on our Landcare project.

13.01.2022 Hi all, Well the wheels of bureaucracy are slowly turning and it looks like our Landcare group will have boots on ground in early November. Aborists should be onsite in the next few weeks to assess the storm-damaged trees, as well as undertake lopping and removal of fallen branches.... Council's heritage advisor has provided a Heritage Advice Note which outlines concerns and recommendations, with the main recommendation being the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan. There are some exciting ideas being suggested, such as archeological and cadastral surveys, comprehensive flora and fauna surveys, detailed historical research and planning for signage and the pathway. If anyone would like a read of the Heritage Advice, shoot us a pm via the page. Cheers, Ben

03.01.2022 TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS FOR THE NORTH TUMBULGUM CEMETRY RESTORATION AND LAND CONSERVATION ... Hi everyone , I just want to give you all an update about the restoration at North Tumbulgum Cemetery. Ben informed me last week that the council is organising arborists to look at the trees at the cemetery and the cultural advisor has finalised the recommendations... So we are slowley getting closer to knowing when we can start work there. It’s a painfully slow process but hopeful...ly we will know soon . When we know the dates to start, I will individually contact everyone who has put their name down to volunteer to inform u all -and I’ll post it on the local pages . Thank you to all for your patience and hopefully it won’t much longer of a wait to start . Anyone wanting to volunteer with the restoration, can still inbox me on Facebook or send me your name and number to me Satya MacDonald 0484181297 ..or inbox me on the North Tumbulgum Historic Cemetery page on Facebook ..
