25.01.2022 GAME 4: Treasure Quest Multiplication https://www.mathplayground.com/treasure_quest_multiplicatio This game is all about developing factor knowledge by observing that the number 18 can be produced by 2x9, as well as 3x6. When the target is a square number, the quantity of targets to find is an odd number. For example, when the target is 16 on a 1 to 9 grid, there are 3 different squares to find. One will have a repeated factor 4x4 = 16. It game also reinforces the fact that multiplication is commutative. That is, 2 times 9 produces the same result as 9 times 2.
25.01.2022 Looking forward to returning to face to face, hands on, tutoring activities in the very near future. I'll be in touch with the parents of students that I currently have. I will also have 3 new places available in term 2.
23.01.2022 I love the below. It explains why I place a large emphasis on critical thinking and reasoning skills.
23.01.2022 A worthy read about the effect stereotyping can have. https://characterlab.org/tips-of-t/myth-of-the-lazy-genius/

23.01.2022 Time for a long overdue rant about the state of our maths education at secondary schools......... If I could change one aspect about the maths education in the schools I have taught at is to stop assessing across the whole cohort. A student needs the opportunity to feel success at the level they are at. It is completely ridiculous to assess a 5.1 level student with the same assessment task as a 5.3 level student. There is no rationale to award a student achieving well at 5.1 ...level a C or D grade because thats how they compare to an A grade 5.3 student. The 5.1 level student is also an A grade at the 5.1 level. See research supporting this below. A lot of my tutoring students come to me feeling utterly hopeless at maths and their self esteem is shattered. Parents tell me their kid is really struggling with maths but what I see is a student who has been battered by the system, with confidence completely stripped, so they just dont bother trying any more. This has got to change!!! A key way in which labelling works is that student attitudes and beliefs about mathematics, including their own perceptions of their own ability in the subject, become internalized and reinforced by their experiences (and behaviours). The outcome can be self-fulfilling and self-reinforcing cycles. These can be either a negative, vicious cycle termed the failure cycle, or a positive, virtuous cycle, termed the success cycle by Ernest 13.
22.01.2022 Good advice for those parents with children with special needs.
22.01.2022 Most tutoring works on instrumental understanding, giving students (and parents) false hope when they score well in one single test at school. Effective tutoring addresses the shortfall a students relational understanding, as this is often the cause of ongoing difficulties in mathematics. What kind of maths instruction is your child receiving?
22.01.2022 I teamed up with the University of Sydney to shoot this Q&A for Year 12 students trying to navigate study in the midst of COVID-19! Questions include: Will... I need to repeat Year 12? How long should I study? Hope do we know were learning the right thing? Any tips for group study sessions? Video link: https://youtu.be/QsNu-K7iQL0
21.01.2022 GAME 3: Missing Multipliers This game is all about developing factor knowledge and helps with the development of the idea of COMMON FACTORS. Reveal 10 answers in the grid and work backwards to determine what the heading numbers are. Challenge: There are bigger grids available on the website to challenge yourself even further. Also, why not try and work out the answer using the least number of reveals. What is the smallest number of reveals you can make and still get the correct answer.
20.01.2022 2 Loves - "Love for the subject and love for your students" - 100% right!
19.01.2022 Geometry is awesome!! https://www.facebook.com/196827063992420/posts/1219613975047052/?sfnsn=mo&d=n&vh=e
19.01.2022 Girls and Mathematics - Watch this video. What can you, as parents, to support your daughters to achieve success? It is time our culture changed.
18.01.2022 If anyone is looking for a maths tutor, here is another operating in our region. I often pass on Molly's number because I am at capacity and have less time available due to my family circumstances. Molly tutors a range of subjects, including maths, chemistry and English, whereas I only tutor maths. I also don't tutor Fridays or the weekends and if these are the only days you are available for tutoring then I recommended giving Molly a call.
17.01.2022 Ever wondered what division of fractions looks like visually? Love this!!
16.01.2022 Best meme about this year yet!
16.01.2022 A bit of comical relief.
14.01.2022 This was on a teachers FB post and it resonated with me on so many levels. The WSU grad cert course in primary maths education has been fantastic as it reinforces my own belief system in education. I will no longer doubt myself when I see other teachers use a more teacher led style of teaching. This is not for me. Students come to school with their own constructed knowledge and I will continue to honour that with my teaching and meet the student where they are at. 2 more weeks left of my course!
14.01.2022 Teachers can have a life long impact on your life. My English teacher wrote me a letter in my senior year. It contained inspirational quotes that she loved and wanted to share with me. One of those was Bryce Courtney's, "A Recipe for Dreaming". I've reread this letter many times in my life and each time it has had different meaning and each time it has had a positive impact. Today, I needed to share this inspirational quote with one of my students. I hope it has the same positive impact.
13.01.2022 If this is you then why not give my maths tutoring a try. Limited spaces available in term 3. Tutoring at students home (Tumut town only) available, at this stage, due to local library restrictions continuing to be in force.
13.01.2022 I love this idea! A great example of data collection. https://www.facebook.com/327506404770707/posts/668816237306387/?sfnsn=mo

09.01.2022 They will be back to school soon.....there is a light at the end of the tunnel. To all the parents I've spoken to, you are doing an amazing job!! (Had to laugh at this pic...no offence intended)
09.01.2022 play is the start
08.01.2022 GAME 1: Multiplication Meteor - Focusing on a quick recall of multiplication facts, this game has the benefit of being able to set your level of difficulty. Speed choices are Slow, Normal or Fast and a range of multiplication tables can be chosen to avoid having 1x or 2x tables into the mix (increasing the difficulty of the game). The other additional benefit of this game is the ability to track your improvement. The results screen provides an accuracy percentage, a rate of questions answered per minute and provides the correct answer to questions completed incorrectly. https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_MeteorMultiplication.html This game is reminiscent of an old game I used to play on my Commodore64 computer and I encourage all students learning to improve their recall of their times tables to play this game daily.
08.01.2022 I've been very quiet on here and some of you might be wondering where I've disappeared to. After more than 20 years since I graduated with my teaching qualification, I have returned to university and I'm currently in the process of completing a Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Education. It has been a wonderful journey thus far. I miss my tutoring students a lot but I've been eager to improve my teaching practice even more. I'm currently seeking YEAR 5 & 6 students... to test out a new game I've designed on adding fractions. It is a two player game. I need some feedback post playing, time taken per game, enjoyment level, difficulties experienced (if any), including photos of the game board post game plus a brief student profile. Anyone able to help? The game is designed to build conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting similar fractions prior to building more formal algorithms. The feedback would be included in my university research and agreeing to trial the game is acceptance of this inclusion. No names will be used. See more
06.01.2022 163 nights to go until the first HSC maths exam! My only advice is.....if you haven't already started revising, start NOW!!!!
06.01.2022 I love this quote - it is SO true. P.s. Don't miss out on Dr. Tony Attwood's and I's NO COST webinars running this week https://elearning.suelarkey.com.au/
06.01.2022 Hands on maths activities are fun. Here is an activity that demonstrates that the angle sum of a quadrilateral is 360 degrees, if students already grasp that angles at a point add to 360 degrees. Three angles measured by a protractor, how can we find the forth without measuring?
05.01.2022 For those confused by the colours and why Biden can be leading considering how much red there is, here is a better graph.
05.01.2022 A maths metaphor I can completely relate to.
04.01.2022 GAME 2: Four in a Row Multiplication - a game for pairs This game is what you would classify as a Low Floor, High Ceiling game, which means that it has a low entry level to play (that is, easy to learn) but the educational benefits of the game is high. This game has a strategic element that makes it a lot of fun. When the game heats up, players are striving to block their opponent, while pursuing their own strategy to get four numbers in a row. This game requires the player t...o think ahead and know not just the times tables for their play but also the times tables needed for their opponent to make their move. How to play: Player One starts by putting a paper clip under two numbers in the row below the board. He/She multiplies the numbers and covers that answer on the board with a counter of their chosen colour (or use noughts and crosses) Player Two moves only one paper clip to a new number in the row beneath the board. He/She multiplies the paper clip numbers together and covers that answer on the board with a counter of their chosen colour. Play continues like that until one player has four of their counters in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. They are the winner. If the answer to multiplying two paper clip numbers is already covered the player loses that turn.
04.01.2022 Thoughts about the recent HSC exams anyone?
03.01.2022 A little gem I found.
03.01.2022 At a Maths Conference I attended last year, Eddie Woo made the following comment, "You don't have to force/coerce/bribe children to play, so if we make learning like play, then we don't need to deal with issues of disengagement". I couldn't help but nod in agreement through my own experience as a student and now as a teacher. As a young child I recall playing computer games for hours on end on an old Commodore 64. One game in particular was a favourite of mine. It involved b...lasting away asteroids. The answer to a maths problem was in the rocket shooting down the asteroids and the question was contained in the asteroids. We had addition, subtraction and multiplication Commodore64 game cassettes. I enjoyed playing these games and I believe my mental maths skills were enhanced by this training at an early age. I often see my students get so caught up in playing a game that they don't even realise they are developing and exercising their maths skills. To celebrate my FB page receiving 100 likes recently, over the next few days I will be sharing with you a few of my favourite games. Enjoy!
02.01.2022 Great website with maths activities and games for your Pre-K to 6 kid. Check it out and if you find any you like from the site, comment below and let me know.
