25.01.2022 Nobody wants to arrive on a Tuesday morning to see a lake, but thats what John faced yesterday when he arrived at Caloundra. By mid-morning the rain had cleared and the damage was inspected. A few damp spots, and out came the trusty push mowers to try and dry the wicket. After a lot of hard work, the rewards paid off this afternoon.

25.01.2022 Its come to our attention that there are people paying $230 for a 83 x 62cm tray of turf so their pets can do their business on real grass. Fresh turf is delivered weekly, fortnightly or monthly - depending on your needs. What are your thoughts? Anyone else struck with the feeling that theyre in the wrong line of the turf business?

23.01.2022 Just make yourselves comfortable there fellas! We have a flock of Corellas making a mess of a clients field. Options such as fireworks, live firing, scarecrows and strobe lighting are out as we are in a high theft, urban environment. Weve considered spraying out the carpet grass which appears to be their preferred food source, but are worried about how much recovery wed see from the couch over winter. Anyone have any suggestions in giving these lovely birds the heave-ho or at the minimum, mitigating the damage theyre doing?

22.01.2022 The little something we bought for Christmas Thanks to Mentay Turf Gear for getting it to us so quickly.

22.01.2022 The boss heard a whisper that one of his staff was going to mark out Bracken Ridge with proper paint in his absence, and hurried out with the cans to prevent that from happening. Youre either team paint can or team paint brush around here! Thoughts on the two?

22.01.2022 Want to learn how to prepare a better wicket and/or improve your field? Here at Turf Wicket Maintenance Services we know theres not one size fits all approach to wicket preparation. Each ground has different characteristics, different machinery and varying amounts of staff or volunteer time to dedicate to the wickets. As contractors, we have seen a large number of grounds, worked with a wide range of machinery, and helped paid staff and volunteers from a variety of ba...ckgrounds, ages and abilities to improve their greenkeeping skills. We understand that knowing the how, when and why is crucial to quality grounds management. This is why we come to you, with a training program that is practical, hands on, and is tailor made to suit your needs. 21.01.2022 Wicket build from removal of old synthetic wicket to the first few games on the new four block wicket. We had some minor issues getting the wicket turf to establish due to massive weather swings but the use of old shade cloth helped protect the turf and got things on the right track. Thanks to Twin View Turf for their involvement, and a big shout out to Trent, who got to laying turf when the layers were delayed.

21.01.2022 When the weeks weather forecast looks a bit dodgy and you hedge your bets by doing a tour of the Northside getting grounds underway...

21.01.2022 Show us your roller

21.01.2022 When youre torn between being relieved youre not prepping for a game and annoyed that youll be spending the second half of the day in wet underpants

20.01.2022 Its easy to make a post about a simple situation. Not so simple when you peek under the covers the day before game day to find a small lake, and the wind is blowing the covers back over the match wicket! Thankfully we had the Club President and his wife to help peel back the cover from the match wicket and secure it with two rollers and an old ride-on mower (the blades had long since been removed from the mower). The worst of the wet was mopped up with towels, then it was... on to drying the wet patches with a hand held blower. At this point the wind, which didnt let up, sent the pigtails in the air. The pigtails were quickly put back into place, before it was back to move blowing of the wet patches. After a few hours, we put the hessian back on. Over the top went a few just-purchased-from-Bunnings tarps, to prevent any further leaks. Time to put the machinery back in the shed, right? Only no, the mowers battery decided now was the time to clock off for the week. Thankfully it was restarted by the Club, the covers secured, and when we arrived on Saturday, the final wicket preparations were undertaken. Most importantly, the game went on. Many thanks to the players of USC-Buderim Cricket Club for their assistance in salvaging what could have been a catastrophe.

17.01.2022 Are you a curator wanting to hit the town but cant shift the dirt under your fingernails? Maybe you should consider a set of acrylics. No need to stick to JD as Toro, Stihl, Mowmaster, Mentay etc would also look great.

17.01.2022 This looks like part of a TAFE assessment, but its actually the best example weve seen of what happens when soil with an improperly aged organic component is used. The turf that was laid over the top settled in very well and suppressed most of the weeds, but the border was a cornucopia of pest plants. It was also the first - and hopefully last - time weve seen corn pop up around a sporting field.

17.01.2022 Rugby in blue, and isnt it pretty?

16.01.2022 Hows everyones wickets looking for the weekend?

16.01.2022 It turns out someone (or some people) were so bored on a Thursday night they decided to sit on the covers at the local club and eat home brand Neapolitan ice cream with a knife and fork What is the weirdest thing youve found on or under covers?

16.01.2022 Thinking about renovating your wicket before the next season starts? Lacking the motivation to do it yourself? TWMS offers cricket wicket renovations at great prices. Wicket Renovation Process The wicket renovation process commences with string-lining to ensure a uniform width and length of your wicket block. We then scarify in two directions (typically North-South and East-West) to remove any runners and remove organic matter in the wicket block. A rotary mower is then run... over the block to ensure clippings are removed. The grass is cut to a height of 5mm to ensure a uniform surface and allow us to identify any lumps, spots and bumps, so we can level them off. After you thatch has been removed and your new soil is spread, we apply fertiliser to ensure optimum turf growth. The wicket renovation process is normally completed in one day, and a six to eight week recovery time (dependent on time of year and weather) normally follows. Wicket Renovation Costings A standard four wicket block in average condition (level-wise) will cost around $2500 (additional transport charges may be applicable for renovations past the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba or Northern Rivers) including GST and this includes: Scarify and vacuum all debris off the wicket block Remove and dispose of thatch and organic matter Supply and deliver premium crushed black soil Levelling of wicket block Application of specialist turf starter to ensure optimum turf growth Are there weeds in your block? We can price up hand-weeding or spraying of selective herbicides. If you have an active committee, we are happy to provide advice on hand-weeding before we come in to renovate your wickets. Laser Levelling For a perfectly flat pitch, laser levelling is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to provide additional or stand-alone fertilising services to ensure the recovery of your wickets over the winter season. Got a complete nightmare of a wicket block on your hands and a limited budget? We are always willing to tailor-make a program to suit your Club, so that the road to recovery can commence.

16.01.2022 And with that, cricket is over until 2019. Now we start the minor renovations, spraying and program adjustments!

16.01.2022 You may remember the shared tenancy renovation photos we shared recently. Were pleased to have updates. Picture 3 was taken 5 weeks post renovation. Picture 4 was taken just shy of the final preparations last Friday. Club volunteers do the majority of the wicket preparation each week - were pleased to be working with them now, and impressed at their dedication and the quality of their work.

14.01.2022 Bit dry, isnt it mate?

13.01.2022 Hands up whos used a roller like this before?

12.01.2022 What's the worst batch of wicket soil you've had delivered? This is the result of six hours' rock picking... and we're still going. It's #nottotallycricketwicketsoil with this amount of contamination

12.01.2022 Thank goodness for the Christmas/New Year period. Without it, Turf Wicket Maintenance Services would be sorely understaffed. Happy birthday to Josh, Andy and John who all celebrate their birthdays within a 6 day period.

11.01.2022 Seven drums crushed, three or four to go. The school based apprentice is probably praying we take care of it between Monday and Thursday, but hes flat out of luck.

11.01.2022 Its been a quiet few weeks at Turf Wicket Maintenance Services. For some clients well be waving good-bye for the next few weeks/months, for others well be providing basic maintenance services. Itll be hard going without the sunshine, the good times and the cricket, but were taking the mantle that its better to be temporarily bored and broke than forever dead. We hope everyone stays safe and at some point in the future were back playing one of the greatest games on earth.

09.01.2022 Best put the covers on!

08.01.2022 Proud to be sponsoring our longest standing client

08.01.2022 Took just a bit of wiregrass out of a wicket for a reno were doing. The infestation was so severe that one of the pitches had been rendered unusable. There will be plenty of ongoing maintenance required after we finish up early next week, but with the right care the wicket will return to its former glory

07.01.2022 It was a lovely day at the very scenic Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club assisting with the renovation of their facilities.

07.01.2022 Were not yet ready to admit defeat, but the weather is certainly proving a challenge! Whats your strategy for this sort of weather?

07.01.2022 Congratulations to Helensvale Hogs Rugby Union Club 3rds for their win tonight. If you're in the Gold Coast area, head down tomorrow for more grand final action. It's also another big weekend at Pine Rivers Cricket Club with juniors and seniors tomorrow, and a rep game on Sunday. We'd love to show you a 'completed job' photo but the linemarker we took to the Club to mark the inner circle and boundary line decided that 3.30pm on a Friday was the perfect time to throw a fault. Over to the other side of the city the boss went, to pick up a marker from another site, and off he'll go at 4am tomorrow to get the job finished. Don't feel sorry for him; he earns more than the other staff.

05.01.2022 What's the size of the block/s you work with, and what is the ideal size for your situation? We regularly work with everything from a 6m x 30m 2 pitch block to an old style 5 pitch measuring in at 15.5m x 25.5m. When it comes to mowing in the middle of summer, or pulling on covers, the smaller blocks are the clear winner, but for year round cricket the bigger blocks come into their own with the fifth pitch really comes into it's own.

05.01.2022 Hands up who always manages to jag hot weather on the day of scheduled renovation works? But when cricket is played year round, beggars cant be choosers. Today we were off to Pine Rivers Cricket Club where the block was mowed back and scarified, with light topdressing undertaken on a few low patches before the block was sprayed with both fertiliser and herbicides. Regular watering and sunny weather will do the rest, and the problem child wicket no. 2 should be in much better shape in 2019.

05.01.2022 Ever wondered how to properly repair a patch on a cricket wicket? We normally prefer to rely on adequate nutrition and rest to allow a wicket to recover, but sometimes youre struggling with the nutrition or the patch is too large, or there are other factors at play and you need to give your turf a helping hand. This year we took over a wicket that had several large bare patches where clumps of weeds had been manually removed. After a couple of frustrating months battling c...orellas, weather, irrigation issues and a wicket that just wasnt responding to traditional programs, we bit the bullet and patched the worst of the bare patches. Heres the process we followed... 1. Identify your turf type and measure up the area to be turfed. Allow for a good five centimetres overhang on the borders of your patches. You have two options here; purchase washed turf or order regular turf and wash it yourself. 2. When your turf arrives, check that it is of excellent quality. This is not the time to put down okay turf dont be afraid to reject an order or use the substandard turf to patch up a less vital area. If you ordered unwashed turf, its time to pull out the pressure washer and get to work. Wash all of the sand/dirt/rocks from the roots as possible without damaging the turf.this may take two or three attempts. 3. Cut your turf to size and lay it over the bare patches. You will notice that it looks like its sitting very proud (high above the rest of the grass), however this is completely normal and necessary. 4. Care for your turf using normal grow-in procedures. Your turf is ready for a tidy up with a rotary mower when the turf is thickly struck and in good health. When it grows back, give it another cut for a rotary mower. 5. After you have cut the turf twice with a rotary mower, it is generally time for a verti-cut. Verti-cutters are less aggressive than scarifiers, so if you can, use the former. 6. You may notice that the turf that was once sitting very proud has now sunk a little and you have a low spot in your wicket. If this is the case, top dress with black soil. This is a rough overview of how to repair a patch and the time it takes will vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions, as well as your turf type and nutrition program. You may also face a few setbacks we had continual issues with irrigation as well as an unwanted couch fly infestation during this process! but patience and good care should lead to good results.

04.01.2022 When the paspalum is sprayed, and the wire grass is wick wiped, the couch will start to make its cunning (and welcome) recovery.

04.01.2022 Guess who broke the scraper bar? Thats right, it was Josh. Cant be too hard on him, it was pretty rusty!

02.01.2022 From the team at Turf Wicket Maintenance Services we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and happy new year. Hopefully everyone gets to enjoy some time with loved ones.
