08.01.2022 #Repost Spilt Milk Psychology You get what you get and you MIGHT get upset. What do I mean when I say all feelings are welcome, not all behaviours are... welcome? On the weekend, we had a birthday party for my son (turning six). He was given a stack of coloured cups to hand out. At first, he sat and tried to work out which person would like which colour. Then he stopped, shuffled them, and walked around the table handing them out in their random order. He got to his brother and paused. He KNOWS that this brother’s favourite colour is blue. He looked at the pile of cups, and the top one was orange. He took it, passed it to his brother and said You get what you get and you don’t get upset. If you scream and you shout then you’ll just miss out. Curious, I asked where he had learned that rhyme. He told me they say it at school when handing out items, in order to stop whining over favoured colours, and prevent the chaos of haggling and swapping. That’s interesting, I said, but sometimes, if I don’t get what I want, I AM disappointed. I DO get upset. Don’t you? Yes, but you’re not MEANT to! my son replied. Hmmmm actually, I think when something is upsetting, you’re allowed to be upset. Being disappointed when you miss out on something isn’t the WRONG feeling. Is it? The eldest chipped in, Yeah, but if you whine about it, you’ll get in trouble and just miss out. But you’re not in trouble for being disappointed you’re in trouble for the whining, aren’t you? We talked about calm down strategies we can use when we are feeling upset, like deep breaths, and reminding ourselves about small problems vs big problems. Then my three boys together set about writing a better rhyme. It’s longer than the original, but I think they did a great job. (Note: they use brave as a simplification of dialectical thinking the idea they can be both upset AND okay.) You get what you get And you might get upset. If you don’t get your fave You can practice being brave. Breathe in and breathe out You don’t need to shout. If you don’t get your way You can still be okay. See more

08.01.2022 This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are prewriting patterns, with the average (not prescribed) age at which child...ren are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as visual motor integration. Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better. 07.01.2022 Today we had a pyjama, popcorn, movie and hot chip day all inspired by the children! The recent rainy days prompted a group discussion about the children’s favourite rainy day rituals. It was a special day that was meaningful to the children. #childledlearning #lifelonglearner #childrensvoicesmatter #childledenvironment #intentionalenvironment

07.01.2022 We are a generation of parents who feel uncomfortable with our kids feeling uncomfortable. We can’t handle our kids being upset with us. Or upset about anythi...ng. It’s okay for our kids to feel angry or disappointed or annoyed. Walk beside them on this road. All of us (kids and adults) need to learn how to sit with uncomfortable feelings. And our kids need us to set fair rules, to protect their mental health, to lean in, to pay attention to their friendships and to let them experience failure or disappointment. Parenting is the hardest thing I have ever done. I am not a parenting expert or a tech expert. I am making just as many mistakes as everyone else. But I remind myself - it’s not about being perfect. It’s simply about continuing to lean in and pay attention. I am posting all this today to start a conversation. Because what we’re doing (as a society) clearly isn’t working. A car alarm is going off with our tweens and teens. We need to step up and make some changes. Image credit: Charlie Mackesy

05.01.2022 We don’t need to see the rest of the year as a ‘write off’. Make the most of every day. Not climbing mountains but working deeply on presence. See kids. Be with kids. #be #nolongtilholidays
