24.01.2022 HISTORIC MONDAYS Good morning friends! As promised, this week we are sharing the history of our amazing wood fired scotch oven! . ... Charles and Stephenson Turner had the famous oven brought over from the UK around 1885 -1890 The oven in its full glory was built by Moses Thomas in Mernda, the same man who built the house and bakery The oven is 5 meters long and 3.9 meters wide and has the original iron work which was made in London. Unfortunately, the door has deteriorated over the years and has been replaced! But the rest of the oven is 100% original. . 08.01.2022 HISTORIC MONDAYS Good morning to our beautiful customers! We thought wed take you on a wee historical journey today We often get asked about the history of our iconic vintage gem. So over the coming weeks our Monday posts will be dedicated to sharing a little bit of our history... . Two brothers, Charles and Stephenson Turner were the original creators, founders and owners of our historic bakery Which is why we returned its name to Turners...to honour the heritage . The bakery was built by Moses Thomas in the early 1870s The Turners family originally lived in Scarborough on the eastern coast of the UK they were farmers and equestrians. They moved to Melbourne somewhere around 1790. The brothers were born in the 1850s and lived in Northcote until they were working on some land in Mernda and came across the land that is now the home to the bakery! The brothers brought the land at 107 Schotters Road Mernda the property we all know and love around 1890. Stay tuned for next week hint: we will be talking ovens! The cafe we know today, where we welcome you through the front entrance to see our coffee machine and sweets was the shop where the brothers would sell their bread Where our beautiful customers dine in, where you enjoy your breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea was the house the Turner brothers lived in . The first room was the loungeroom The kids room where all our kids books and toys are was Stephensons bedroom Our very famous and loved pink room was Charlies bedroom! . The extension to the building on the back of the house was built in the 1930s. The second building on the side of the property is the bakery and is still used as such! Charlie and Stephenson Turner would sell their amazing sourdough bread from the front of the house in the first room. The door behind our coffee machine was the entrance to the little shop The brothers would horse and cart thats right!!! You read correctly- HORSE AND CART! the handmade bread all over the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne From the bakery in Schotters Road Mernda to as far as Heidelberg and surrounding Now thats a pretty fair effort If you ask us! . We have even had a great grandmother come to the bakery in recent years and tell us of her memories of have the bread delivered to her home in south Morang when she was a young child. . Did you know that the original cart that the Turners brothers used it still around Mernda and is still in use? How amazing is that!? Heres a photo from when they came to visit the bakery in 2016!
