25.01.2022 Fantastic article about the science of reading with audio to go with it:. It's based on US statistics but still very relevant to us here in Australia. https://www.apmreports.org//hard-words-why-american-kids-a

20.01.2022 Did you know? Kerry Stokes, Australian Businessman has dyslexia Networth A$2.223 billion... It’s very hard work. Words are not my skill and because they’re not my skill, I have to work doubly hard. Kerry Stokes Young Kerry Stokes frequently felt the strap at school when he mis-spelt words and turned in poorly written work. His teachers could see that he was bright so assumed his disability, diagnosed decades later as dyslexia, was the product of laziness or disrespect. He left school at 14.

19.01.2022 The Specific Learning Disorders Flow Chart is a useful reference for anyone working with students with SLD. It provides an overview of the types of specific lea...rning disorders including identifying characteristics and underlying processing impairments. The flow chart outlines the functional impact of a learning disorder in the classroom and the implications for intervention. Recommendations for adjustments and accommodations are also detailed. 16.01.2022 Kate Nation's D.K. Mackenzie lecture. Learning to Read: From Biology to Culture via Cognition. This lecture would be an excellent resource as a preview to LET...RS Module 1 or as a review after. It hits all the essential points for the foundations of reading. It is just a bit over an hour but worth every minute. Live stream here: https://livestream.com/oxuni/bod-nation?t=1549671285200 Slides here: https://tinyurl.com/y6f33hrq See more

12.01.2022 I cringe every time I hear that a school has recommended behavioural optometry and/or tinted lenses for struggling readers! How about we actually teach them how to read instead... https://mobile.abc.net.au//irlen-syndrome-medica/11218184

05.01.2022 This podcast interview with Emily Hanford is about effectively teaching reading. It is exceptional! The quotes from her teacher classmates in a Master’s level reading course are especially insightful. Give it a listen!

04.01.2022 Mark this on your calendar! A free webinar by Dr. Louisa Moats to follow-up on the gangbuster, tsunami-viral documentary that has at long last brought the issue... of teachers of reading to public light! (If you never read/listened to the Hanford podcast - do that first - here's the link: https://www.apmreports.org//hard-words-why-american-kids-a). P.S. Louisa Moats was the keynote speaker at our conference last year (her keynote can be viewed on our YouTube Channel), and Emily Hanford is one of the keynote speakers at our 2 day conference this year - the other is Dr. Maryanne Wolf).

01.01.2022 Many schools in Victoria use Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) as their only means of literacy intervention for struggling students - it doesn’t work for those who need it most. Some schools still use Reading Recovery (other states have denied funding for this) which is even worse. Our kids deserve better.
