18.01.2022 Lots of us have faced mental health concerns during COVID. A podcast interview I heard with Dr Alex Corb, a Neuroscientist from Dept of Psychiatry at UCLA in the US gave some helpful tips. Dr Corb is the author of a book called "Upward Spiral". He said there are small things we can do to change the activity of our brains neurotransmitter system which can set us on an upward spiral out of depression. He suggests physical activity - moving your body and getting your heart rate ...up a little bit along with a bit of sweating has a wide range of effects on a bunch of different key brain regions and the neurotransmitter system. He explained that exercise can modulate the serotonin system and can modulate the dopamine reward system having an effect on the habit circuits in the brain. This can also change our brain activity and the way our brain reacts while we're sleeping to help make sleep more restorative. This in turn, has numerous effects and it's one of the biggest things we can do to start changing the activity and chemistry of your brain for the better. So get moving and engage in physical activity if you've been feeling a bit down during COVID.

13.01.2022 Dr Norman Swan's "Health Report" on Mon 12 October, reviewed a randomised controlled trial of 1500 people in Norway who were followed for five years. The main findings were that those who exercised had a lower mortality rate than the general population. It was also found that at a time in life when people should be losing fitness, the exercisers didn't just retain their fitness but improved their aerobic fitness level. The greatest improvement was those who participated in Hi...gh Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). That is the main reason we use HIIT in TEAM sessions - but don't confuse that with High Impact exercising! We keep the impact low - particularly for those who are just starting out or who need to exercise at a slower pace. The above podcast reported how weight training has been found get elderly people back on their feet faster than any drug. Weight training should also not be confused with 'High Impact'. You will find weights are used in most TEAM sessions.
