25.01.2022 Happy Friday again! The Nambung Country Music Muster is in full swing. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved in negotiating the Covid road to make it all happen. Overflow camping is now open in Jurien Bay (probably until Monday at this point). You will need to register before entering. Call 0474 496 462. Overflow camping is available in Cervantes. Call 0459 837 159 to register. The weather forecast for the weekend looks great. The wind should gradually ease ...on Saturday. Sunday looks perfect! Enjoy your weekend! We are open on Saturday from 9AM to 1PM. #thisiscervantes #thisiswa #jurienbaytime #wanderoutyonder #westernaustralia See more
25.01.2022 Happy Friday again! This dog was caught trying to impersonate a Human at Sandy Cape to avoid having to be on a leash. Her disguise was quickly detected, and the excuse for not being on a lead was that humans don`t have to have one unless they want to! She just didn`t want to wear a lead whilst on holiday was the real reason (that`s what we discovered after interrogations were completed and statements taken) Her defence Lawyer was able to convert her possible prison time for... the off lead charge and she will receive a suspended sentence due to co-operating with enforcement staff, but she has been paw-printed and mug shots taken for future reference. Seriously though, please keep your furry companion on a lead at Sandy Cape, clean up after them and we will all be happy! In other breaking news, the fire restrictions at Sandy Cape have been put in place early due to low soil moisture levels. Campfires are now NOT permitted until the beginning of April next year. In piscatorial news, I am told that the Tailor are on the move if you are interested. Some of you will already know of my fishing expertise and I would suggest having a chat with the local tackle stores in Jurien or Cervantes for more solid advice. Enjoy your weekend, get out there wandering, snorkelling, sandboarding, or wildflower hunting at Lesueur National Park. Jump out of a plane if that`s your thing or take a Sea Lion tour for some special memories. Do a lunch at Cervantes followed by a Pinnacles sunset or head over to Badgingarra where the Wildflowers are still hanging in there! And of course, there is nothing wrong with just chilling out with a good book from the library. We are open from 9AM to 1PM Saturday. #jurienbaytime #caravanandcamping #thisiscervantes #australiascoralcoast #westernaustralia #dogfriendly #caravanandcamping #4wdadventure #explorewa4wdadventures
25.01.2022 A little over 53 years ago, North Head near Sandy Cape was the scene of a fatal shark attack. One year after the attack, the family and friends of Robert Bartle erected a monument in his honour on the Headland at North Head. On the 19th of August 1967, a 23-year-old Robert Bartle was spearfishing with his dive buddy Lee Warner 700 meters from the shore at North Head.... Whilst ascending from a dive, Robert was attacked from beneath with tremendous force by a Great White shark. Realising that Robert was dead, Lee headed for land. Warner found a set of car keys in a parked car and drove to Sandy Cape for help. He was brought back to the scene in a cray boat to warn other divers in the area and to look for remains. The shark was seen briefly before swimming off. No remains of Robert were found. If you are visiting North Head over the weekend, please pay your respects to Robert Bartle. The Bartle family still regularly visit and pay their respects at the memorial and request that vehicles are not driven up to the memorial site to preserve the site and ensure the memorial remains stable. Park in the allocated parking area and enjoy the walk past the igloos up to the memorial. If you are diving over the long weekend you need to be aware that a rotting Whale carcass is decomposing near Boullanger island and is likely to attract large predators. Stay safe.
25.01.2022 If you are a wildflower enthusiast, you will have a bucket list of places and plants that you want to tick off! If you have been a wildflower enthusiast for a while, your bucket might be getting low because you have done the everlastings, sought out the wreath flowers and wandered the various drives and trails with your camera but will be looking for something new and different. If you are a wildflower enthusiast with a 4WD, there are a few places off the beaten track that ca...n top up your bucket and add to your photo credits with some stunning displays right now. The Kwongan heathland just a little bit inland of the Turquoise coast is not well known for its wildflower displays when compared to the fields of everlastings further north, but trust me when I say, you will be missing out if you don`t add this to the bucket! Not all the heathland is 4WD only but two areas that you should add to the half empty bucket are the access track to Stockyard Gully and the Drovers Cave National park. The bush wildflowers are in full bloom "as we speak" with some seriously interesting displays to aim your camera at! These hidden gems are not on any Wildflower drive map or recognised trails for wildflower viewing and you can make your like-minded enthusiast friends green with envy when you display your pics! Call at the Visitor Centre for more details and to sign the secrecy code for unknown wildflower hotspots! See more
24.01.2022 Welcome to Kambarang the Nyoongar season of birth. (October/November) The season sees the emergence of the orange moodjar blooms (Australian Christmas tree) and flowering of Grass trees with their prominent spikes. The blooms signal that heat is on its way with long dry periods and a general warming trend. #jurienbaytime #Cervantes #thisiswa #noongar #caravanandcamping #wildflowers #wildflowerseason #westernaustralia #australiascoralcoast
24.01.2022 Where are the little gems in the Shire of Dandaragan and surrounds? If you were filling a bucket list for things to do or see as a visitor, what would you load into your bucket? Would you be able to fill it with your wish list or are there things to avoid that just are not worth the effort? What time of the year would you start to empty your bucket? Or are there so many things to see and do that a second bucket is needed? Throw us your feedback and let us know. Where to ...eat, where to go, when to go there, what to avoid, who to travel with, why some places are better than others and even, what is not worth dumping in your bucket? Where is the best coffee? Who gives the best customer service? Let`s have the conversation and find out why we visit this special part of WA. Get your buckets ready! On offer for the best responses is an all-inclusive fully paid tour of the Visitor Centre for two and one cup of instant coffee to share. Extra special responses will also receive a free biscuit with their coffee and exceptional responses will get a gold star on the forehead. See more
23.01.2022 Did you go for a wander out yonder over the weekend? I did, but somehow it`s not the same when you live in Yonder to do your wandering in your own backyard! First, I looked at Sandy Cape but that turned out to be a quick visit. It was so busy that it resembled a Coles car park on Christmas eve! North Head might be the go, I thought. That turned out to be a modified version of the Caravan and Camping show.... I know, I said to myself, I will take a drive out to Stockyard Gully Caves where access is only 4WD. Out there, were enough families and kids to fill an end of year concert at a major metropolitan primary school and a group of visitors filling one of the carparks with a lunchtime banquet for twenty people. I ended up choosing to wander in my own personal backyard, playing with the dogs and weeding away the overgrown garden for some peace and quiet and occasionally listening to the planes flying overhead dropping lots of Sky-jumpers onto the beach at Jurien Bay. I wasn`t disappointed with my wanderings. It was great to see the region full of people enjoying themselves and supporting local business. Maybe next time I will wander on down to Perth where there must have been plenty of empty spaces. See more
22.01.2022 Happy Monday This old boy is being sought for several infringements of the Old Dog code of conduct. Firstly, he was wearing his cap Justin Bieber style and the fashion police are after him for that breach. Next, he was seen cocking his leg on a neighbouring car tyre without consent. He is known to us as a serial bum sniffer with a lengthy offending history of a similar nature.... We are pleased to announce that he has now left the area but was later seen at the Lobster Shack in Cervantes stealing a legally acquired chip off a Seagull. Control your dog`s please people! If you get the chance, call in to the Visitor Centre/Library to check out the Remembrance Day display. Thanks to Ian Stiles and the RSL for the display items and getting it all set up. Thanks also for the time you spent explaining the values of Remembrance Day to the families who turned up to the event. Next weekend is going to be busy in Jurien Bay and Cervantes with the Wildflower Festival of Running and Walking on Saturday 14th (Pinnacles Desert Run) and on Sunday 15th (Turquoise Way Coastal Path run) Those of you that know me, might be surprised to learn that I have been training hard for both events. I have been carrying my deck chair and esky up and down the backyard at least once a week for a month now, but I just found out that there is no prize for the best spectator and my dreams of winning that event have been shattered. I briefly thought of entering the actual run but then I woke up! The Jurien Bay Community Markets are on Sunday 15th at Fauntleroy Park. 8AM to Midday. Enjoy your week! #dogfriendly #cervantes #jurienbaytime #running #westernaustralia #thisiswa #eventswa #caravanandcamping #australiascoralcoast
21.01.2022 There are now a million reasons why you should Wander out Yonder The state government has introduced a new initiative within their Wander out Yonder campaign. As from 10 am this morning if you visit wandervoucher.com.au you can register for a $100 voucher to apply to booking a tour or experience within WA until the 31st of December. This is aimed at kick starting the recovery of Tour and Experiences operators.... One million dollars of vouchers are available, and the campaign offer will close on the 31st of October unless sold out. There are of course conditions that do apply. # The vouchers are only redeemable at participating Visitor Centres and applicable to registered operators. Vouchers can only be redeemed through Visitor Centre booking systems and not directly from operators. Contact the operators for pricing and tour details but bookings MUST be through the participating Visitor Centre. # You will need to book a tour with a combined total of at least $200. This can include several people/friends/families to reach the $200 threshold (i.e. 4 people for a tour value of $50 each) # Vouchers are for Tours/Experiences only and NOT for accommodation. What a perfect opportunity for locals in the Shire of Dandaragan to support their own towns and Tour businesses. Why not be a tourist in your own region for a heavily discounted rate? I am still trying to get Google maps to tell me where Yonder is, but unless told otherwise I am going to assume that it is the Shire of Dandaragan and the towns of Badgingarra, Dandaragan, Cervantes and Jurien Bay. Take a Sea Lion tour, find a fishing charter, leave a perfectly good plane with a parachute attached or get out to Lesueur and Stockyard Gully caves for some adventure. Perhaps an Astro tour of the Pinnacles takes your fancy or a Lobster tour where you get to keep the catch for dinner. Go and Wander out Yonder, it`s not as far as you think!
20.01.2022 Are you looking for a quiet spot to pull up for 72 hours? Are you keen to wander around checking out the wildflowers at that same spot? Drummonds reserve rest stop might just be the place for you. Located 17 kilometres south west of Badgingarra off Bibby road, Drummonds is a perfect little hideaway to give yourself and your canine companion a break to enjoy the peace and quiet. Far enough away from the beach to be devoid of the long weekend or school holiday crowds but cl...ose enough to some amenities to be the perfect Master Nomad hideaway during busy times elsewhere. The reserve is named after James Drummond, a botanist, who worked around the time when the Swan River colony was first established, and he had many exploratory visits to the Dandaragan/Badgingarra region collecting botanical specimens in the mid 1800`s. 20.01.2022 Spring hasn`t officially sprung into Summer just yet but the Silly Season is getting close. In the Kimberley it is known as the Silly Season due to the stifling heat and humidity causing inhabitants to do, say and act out some nutty things. Down this way, it is the summertime influx of visitors swelling the towns, beaches and attractions and some interesting behaviours from a few who seem to think that a code of conduct is something to do with electricity!... To enjoy the silly season in full swing, it is often best to have a place to park your bones with some shelter and amenities. If you have not sorted that fact out now, your deadline is approaching fast! If the Turquoise Coast is on your agenda for a visit, get cracking now to secure a spot. If you are having trouble locating a bone parking spot for you and your tribe give us a call. In breaking news, the local Police have announced that they have engaged the services of a Canine interpreter to enable those travelling with their furry family friends to have the Dog code of conduct explained in a language that they (your Pooch) will understand. If you do not speak Dog yourself, please avail yourself of this free service. #jurienbaytime #caravanandcamping #Cervantes #dogfriendlywa #thisiswa #westernaustralia #sandycape #australiascoralcoast
20.01.2022 The best part about the inclement weather of the last couple of days is that the Bush flies have gone into hiding. Now that I am not swatting for a bit I started thinking about flies and I have come up with a brilliant plan for my future. When I pass-away, I want to be reincarnated as a Bush Fly. To start with, I can annoy all those people who chose to give me a hard time over the years. I can ruin their outdoor fun by getting up their nose, stick behind their sunglasses... and get in their ears. Secondly, I can live it up for a month, breed a few times and die to be reincarnated again. Bush flies (and others) breed in dung, a fact that I am not too fond of, but I won`t be the one laying the eggs! The kids might be a bit smelly for a while, but fly Fathers have nothing to do with their kids anyway! Knowing that Bush flies’ nest in discarded bowel movements, I can`t think of a better reason to properly manage your outdoor ablutions when camping. Think of that when you are swatting them out of the corners of your mouth or the next time you leave a Bush fly nest in an inappropriate place. I still haven`t worked out what my reincarnation will be after my turn as a Bush fly ends but I am working on it and building my bucket list of paybacks. This is going to be fun! PS. If I have died and you see a bushfly with a Merv Hughes handlebar moustache at Sandy Cape, please do not get out the aerosol spray. #jurienbaytime #westernaustralia #caravanandcamping #4wd #westernaustralia #wanderoutyonder #thisiswa #4wdadventure #flies
20.01.2022 Cervantes is a great spot for kids to explore, play, snorkel, or fish. The foreshore playgrounds and facilities are excellent, the grassed picnic area is even better, and the jetty is perfect for small kids to have a go at catching a fish. The shallow waters along the foreshore make for a safe afternoon for parents watching the rug rats paddling in the water and the relaxed atmosphere stays the same no matter how busy the season is. Explore the beach for treasures and washed... up natural flotsam or driftwood and take yourself back to a time when you enjoyed doing the same. Do yourself a favour and let the kids be kids. Let them wear themselves out and get a bit gritty with clean beach sand and saltwater. One more bonus is that Cervantes is a pet friendly town. Your canine companion can share the beach walk and help the kids sniff out interesting washed up items and get into holiday mode along with the rest of the family. Let your pooch know that if he behaves and cleans up after himself, he will always be welcomed. There are still plenty of adult things to do in and around Cervantes. There is more for the kids to do other than the beach or foreshore but some relaxing beach time is a good battery re-charge for all. #Cervantes #jurienbaytime #wanderoutyonder #WesternAustralia #thisiscervantes
19.01.2022 The Nambung National Park and its Pinnacles Desert have been a major drawcard for visitors to our region for a long time before Indian Ocean Drive carved its way through the Landscape. Access was along a rough Limestone track and sand dunes north from Lancelin or coming down along the bumpy track south from Cervantes. Now it can be an easy day trip from Perth in a conventional car and still leave you with hours of sunshine to take the time for lunch in Cervantes, a swim at ...Hangover Bay and an afternoon tea on your return journey anywhere south that takes your fancy. If you have more than a single day to spend there is heaps more to do, to see or participate in, and you won`t be disappointed. You may have been to the Pinnacles before and think that the inanimate Pinnacles would not have changed at all BUT, have you been there since the interpretive Centre was built? Have you ever done a sunset, sunrise, or some amazing stargazing there? (the park is open 24 hours) If you are a camera buff, it is a spectacular site for astrophotography and on different days the atmosphere and moods of the landscape can change, making for some great images. If you have never been to the Pinnacles before, all of this awaits you. Don`t just turn up but plan your visit to get the most out of the National Park. For Pinnacles veterans planning a second visit, think about the season or time of the year. It might be early morning or late afternoon, but it is always different and worth a second look. A glass of nice wine with a deck chair on the lookout at sunset is my choice. The second glass is when the stars or a full moon rise, and I am a happy chappy! If you have your caravan in tow there is plenty of long vehicle parking at the interpretive centre car park. #thisiscervantes #jurienbaytime #wanderoutyonder #Cervantes #caravanandcamping #thisiswa #caravanandcamping #westernaustralia #4wd #australiascoralcoast
18.01.2022 More on Grey Nomads In-between the Master Nomad and the Novice Nomad are several grades of Grey Nomads There are part time Nomads, probationary Nomad`s and the dreaded Bludger Nomad. Bludger Nomads are easy to pick. They prey on good hearted souls during the Happy Hour (or in some cases Happy Hours!) The Bludger Nomads stick to a well-worn pattern of behaviour.... They will turn up at your campsite with a chair under their wing and a reasonably sized esky seemingly packed with some cold ales and ice. They sport a friendly smile and easy conversation as they worm their way under your annexe with an open beer and park their bum on the folding chair. They will take one cold beer from the esky. After that, it goes downhill from there. The esky is a ruse and no longer holds any interesting beverage other than melted ice. Oh, I thought I had more beers than that is the next line, as they fossick around in the empty esky. The average Nomad is a generous soul and offers of beer to the bludger are accepted. Usually there is an I am so sorry I will bring beers to replace those comment and the Bludger Nomad will remain in-situ until the offers of Beer are withdrawn and you almost forcibly get him out of there, or fall for his act and invite him for dinner. A fatal mistake! Once the Bludger Nomad is in he is hard to remove. You will be told tales of woe, how his wife left him for a younger more cashed up version of himself, how his dog took off chasing a bitch on heat and never returned and how he lost all of his money to a new female friend with a gambling problem. If the Bludger thinks he has you hooked he is likely to follow you to your next destination for more free beer and food. Beware the Bludger nomad! See more
17.01.2022 What would you do if you were a Mullet and one of these was about to wrap its talons around you? To be honest your first thought will probably be your last as well and you will be a fish dinner before you even realize. The Ospreys along the Turquoise coast are pin-point accurate hunters and make for great viewing as they use the west coast wind to their advantage. Keep an eye out for them on your coastal travels and marvel at their antics. Thanks to the Jurien Bay Men`s Shed and the Cervantes Fin Fishers group there are a number of man-made nesting sites in Jurien and Cervantes that are used each year to keep the Osprey population alive and well. #jurienbaytime #Cervantes #thisiscervantes #australiascoralcoast #jurienbaymensshed #cervantesfinfishers
17.01.2022 The West coast is well known for throwing windy days at you during summer. That can be a bit annoying when you have towed your trusty dinghy all the way from Perth and you find the wind chop is bigger than the tinny and keeping a hat on your noggin is hard work. You could try Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, or flying an old-fashioned kite after putting a chin strap on your hat! But that`s not your reason for coming here. You could always go to the pub and sit inside out of the win...d, but that can often lead to some heated wind coming over the lips of your bride with a few choice words drifting in your direction as well. Realistically you will only be able to get away with the pub idea for a day or so at best and you will need alternatives for the rest of your stay if the outside wind persists. There is an option of driving out to the Wind Farm and watch the turbine blades go round and round and round but after a while you will end up dizzy and might need to go back to the pub to regain your balance. More hot words from the missus are likely to follow and you will need a plan B to recover from the tongue lashing that the bride might give you! There is always an option of finding a natural feature to hide behind and get out of the wind, but then the bushflies will be thinking the same and eventually you will want to get back in the wind to get rid of the cheeky little buggers from behind your sunnies! Plan C might be it? If you go to the Jurien Bay Sea Search and Rescue website and check out the live weather report you just might be able to pick your times to launch the tinny and return before the wind picks up. They are a helpful bunch with a great interactive website that is just perfect for picking the times to beat the wind. You never know, but if you do this right and come home with a few crays and some fresh fish you may be given leave to attend the pub for celebrations and the Queen of your household might greet you with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. www.jurienmarinerescue.com.au
17.01.2022 Mitchell and Michael from MMM radio will be live broadcasting outside of the Visitors Centre tomorrow morning from 6AM to 9AM. Head on down and be seen (?) on radio for your 15 minutes of Friday fame. Tune in to 109.8 to hear what they think and say about Jurien Bay or call in for a look and put faces to the names.... There will be 2 Michaels there. One will be talking into the microphone and the other one (the older looking one) will be on the sidelines looking bedraggled after a 4AM start to open doors, set up power leads, supply coffee and greet the MMM team. Come on down for a show of support and show them that Jurien Bay community spirit. #jurienbaytime #mmm #australiascoralcoast #thisiswa #wavisitorcentre #thisiscervantes
17.01.2022 Political correctness has come a long way since I was a kid. You would think that it would not affect Tourism, but it does! To please everybody and put us all in the same basket we are now told to correct our written and spoken English (oops, I mean language) to reflect our current times and make sure that we do not alienate any specific individual demographic. I am told that when we travel outside of our normal home-base we are now visitors and not Tourists.... Place names are also getting a politically correct makeover as well. Hangover bay, just a little west of the Pinnacles is soon to be renamed Drink Safe cove People like me who are approaching or past 6 decades of growth, are now known as seniors and we are no longer old! In the Visitor`s centre we sell Jurien Bay stubby holders but now I need to change our signage to reflect that they are now drink temperature controllers in case a young person is drawn into unsafe use of the item. Black Point near Cervantes will now be known as melting pot spit The Indian Ocean is soon to be known as the Native American sea and someone is still working out what we will call Indian Ocean drive! I am also told that I should reflect the fact that not all of us are Fishermen (oops again, I meant Fishers) and start calling Fisherman`s island near Leeman as general purpose rocks I am trying to think of an appropriate name for Knobby Head between Leeman and Dongara but so far cannot think of a name that doesn`t conjure up an image acceptable to the State Nomenclature Committee. Cockleshell Gully road off jurien east road is now to be known as Leshell Gully road in case someone gets offended by the first four letters of the original name. Political correctness may have gone a little bit too far! #westernaustralia #thisiswa #wanderoutyonder
16.01.2022 Are you interested in the military history of the old WW2 radar station and Coast Watch point at North Head? Do you have a 4WD but just not too sure how to get there? It might be that not knowing the terrain or condition of the tracks puts you off a bit or that you might be a little worried about your vehicle`s ability? Joining a tag along tour might be your best option. You can be assured that you and your car will arrive and return in one piece, The guide will impart ev...erything that you might want to know or ask about Radar station 48 and Coast Watch post 16 and you can take in some spectacular coastal scenery that might otherwise avoid your gaze. Tag along tours need to be booked in advance and you will need to be self-contained with your own drinks and snacks. You will not be disappointed. Any stress about how to get there, which turnoff to take and your 4WD ability can sit in the background whilst you enjoy the history and the journey. Call at the Visitor Centre for bookings or further information. #jurienbaytime #thisiswa #westernaustralia #thisiscervantes #4wd #RSL #australiascoralcoast #australianarmy #caravanandcamping #wacaravanandcamping
15.01.2022 Happy Friday once more. I do have a great job. I can tell people where to go when I want to!... In my previous employment, it was frowned upon, and usually resulted in me getting my wrists slapped, but here, I get paid to do it! Also, when I feel the need to get away out bush, on a weekend or on a day off, I can let the First Lady know that I am only doing it for work related research purposes so that I can tell people where to go when I need to. Getting to meet and mingle with happy holiday goers all day is also a bonus, but we do get the occasional grump come in and spread negative vibes. These are the people who really do need telling where to go, but I resist that sort of direction giving. Even if you are a local, call in to the Visitors Centre for a look. You just might be surprised at what your Visitors Centre has on offer! If you like, feel free to bring in people you know who might need telling where to go, and we can do that for you for a 10% commission and a smile. The Flaming Galahs (featuring Monty Cotton) are playing at the Jurien Sports and Recreation Centre on Saturday night. Doors open at 7PM, bookings to 0474 496 462. BYO supper and drinks for a great night. Markets by the Bay are here again on Saturday at the Jurien Bay Hall carpark from 8AM to 12PM And, the Jurien Bay Kart Club have their Association day at the limestone way track. Pre nominations have closed but if you have a bit of spare time, get out there for a look see! Enjoy your weekend, the weather forecast looks good. For me, I reckon I have burned enough calories through the week to allow myself a Vanilla Slice from the Bakery on Saturday morning. Yum! We are open tomorrow from 9AM to 1PM. #thisiscervantes #jurienbaytime #westernaustralia #thisiswa #jurienbay #caravanandcamping
15.01.2022 Are you looking for a unique and kid friendly activity during the school holidays? If so, take a drive out to Hill River Honey in Jurien Heights and have local apiarist Peter Scharf suit your kids up in a bee protection outfit to get down and friendly with the operations of his hives. Let the ankle-biters safely see the difference between a Queen, worker bees and drones. Find out where honey and pollen come from, how bees work and their importance to us all in pollinating ...crops and native wildflowers. Parents can have a taste of some honey mead or purchase some of the freshest wildflower honey you will find. Bees wax, soaps, candle`s and other honey products are also available for sale. This is a perfectly unique opportunity for the kids (and Mum and Dad) to learn and have some fun. Bee there or Bee square! Generously, there is no cost involved but you will need to call ahead to ensure that Peter and Claire are home and available. Call the Visitor centre for contact details, 9652 0870. See more
14.01.2022 Are you looking for something just a little bit different to do or see? Mass flowerings of the WA Grass tree are not particularly uncommon but generally only occur after a bushfire and when conditions are just right for the event. If you are interested in seeing one of these mass flowerings, take a drive towards the north boundary of Lesueur National Park along Cockleshell Gully road, past Cockleshell Gully creek and keep your eyes peeled to the right.... You can`t miss it. Tall spears and unique delicate white flowers are everywhere. Some of the flowering shafts can reach over 4 metres in length and with the base plant growing only around 1 to 2 Centimetres a year, some of the forest will be over 350 years old. Think of this as you take in the spectacle. Take a stroll amongst them and see the multitude of invertebrate life feeding on the pollen and nectar. Value the biodiversity that they bring to the Kwongan landscape as you realize at that specific location the mass flowering may not happen again for decades. #thisiswa #WesternAustralia #jurienbaytime #australiascoralcoast #wawildflowercountry #wavisitorcentre #wildflowers
14.01.2022 I spend my working weekdays with a view of the main road in the middle of the Jurien Bay CBD. For months now, the traffic has been so busy. There are cars with caravans attached, shiny new off-road machines towing camper trailers, big boats, small tinnies, motor-homes and all manner of camping paraphernalia on roof racks and trailers. Sometimes just getting over the road to my favourite lunch supplier is a battle. Sometimes getting back is even worse. I spend the day trying ...to match visitor interests with activities and locations. At the end of each day I can feel the jealousy moving in because everyone who calls in or telephones is either on holiday or planning one. For me, all that I can look forward to is the weekend. The queen of my household usually has other ideas other than me fuelling up the Toyota and attempting to do all the things that I offer to visitors at work. Poor me! I am only telling you this, because this week is Mental Health awareness week and my sanity seems to be slipping further than it normally does towards the end of the working week. I have had slipping sanity before but that was due to raising a bunch of kids. This time is different and yesterday I took my own advice and went for a stroll on the beach just on dark, to look for Ghost Crabs and anything else even slightly interesting. I think it worked! Hump day has come and gone and an empty wine bottle in the bin seemed to have been enough medication for a good nights sleep and getting me ready to tackle the walk across the road for lunch one more time. If you feel that a case of slipping sanity is heading in your direction, just make sure to talk to your loved ones or simply take a night-time stroll on one of the many quiet beaches that we have. It worked for me! See more
09.01.2022 Do you have a Gizmo, SUP, Kayak or Canoe in your shed at home? If you are heading to anywhere along the Turquoise Coast make sure to stack it (or them) on the roof-rack, in your trailer or find any other means at your disposal to get it here. The west coast is known for its summertime windy afternoons, but here, there are enough tucked away bays and places that will ensure that your paddles get wet and that you can stay dry (as long as your paddling ability allows it) On a go...od day you might want to head out to Boullanger island for a look see. On a wild and windy day, you might like to paddle the Hill river estuary (4WD access only). On a medium day, try the Sandy Cape recreation park or head out to some of the sheltered bays on the way to North Head. You could go up to Green Head or Leeman to check out the Leeman anchorage or Lipfert and Milligan`s islands north of Green Head. There are plenty of spots to get away from the west coast afternoon wind and explore the coast but without your little craft underneath you and paddle in hand, it will be land based adventures for you and your water craft will be gathering dust. #thisiswa #cervantes #canoewa #wanderoutyonder #jurienbaytime See more
08.01.2022 I hate to be the one to remind you, but it is only 65 days until Christmas and only 55 days until the school holidays start again. The next long weekend rolls around in 71 days. Whilst all of this is happening the northern Saltwater Crocodile breeding season is in full swing and predicted Cyclone activity in the north, may impact our little patch, as cyclones weave their unpredictable paths in a southerly direction. Why am I telling you all of this? The days between now and t...hen will pass by way too fast and last-minute gift shopping will be the norm again for me and lots of other disorganised Dad`s If you are stuck for gift ideas and want to impress your partners and siblings with your thoughtfulness and gift idea selection, why not try a gift voucher for a Sea lion tour, an adventure tour out to the Stockyard Gully caves or a Skydiving experience? You can be guaranteed that the memories generated from any of these activities will far outweigh and outlast any gift of socks, jock`s or chocolates. #thisiswa #westernaustralia See more

06.01.2022 The long weekend is all but upon us! Some kids are lucky enough to have started their school holidays a day or so earlier than others and most Master Nomads have been tucked away for a few days now to secure their peace and quiet for the next two weeks. I have one last word on Grey Nomads! Of all the sub-species of Grey Nomads, the Naked Nomad could possibly be the worst.... I have seen them on the clothing optional stretch of Cable beach in Broome and have been approached by one at Mary pool in the Kimberley. I have seen my own Naked Nomad unclothed body in the full-length mirror at home, and I just don`t get why some Nomads think that sharing a similar image with the public is an idea worth pursuing! I get the fact that some people like to frolic naked on a beach but frolicking in front of the unsuspecting public seems a bit out there to me! What about the fine beach sand that must invade certain crevices and wrinkles? Having a beer belly hanging over your dangly bits is not really a good look and having a suntan so dark that you look cooked is just not very sun smart, is it? Laying on a beach naked with your knees up showing parts of your anatomy that rarely ever see sunshine is likely to offend anyone who is unlucky enough to get an eyeful. The Mary pool incident caught me by surprise. I had pulled up for a quick lunch and was the only car there when the Naked Nomad pulled up right next to me in a completely empty campground. He got out of his car, took off his pants and wondered over for a chat. I was a bit stunned at first and felt like a pervert because I could not take my eyes off the wrinkled appendage under his huge beer belly! Once I had regained my composure, I noticed that my Missus also seemed a bit fixated and the NN seemed to be settling too comfortably into the conversation. Suddenly, our lunch did not seem so appealing anymore. I couldn`t find the right words to question his lack of pants so we packed up what remained of lunch, and left, leaving the Naked Nomad to display himself to the Magpies, Galah`s and flies. Why? I keep asking myself. Enjoy your holidays and the long weekend. Travel safe.

02.01.2022 With the long weekend looming and almost at the start of the school holidays, it seems that everyone is heading to the coast for some spring sunshine. It will mostly be visitors from elsewhere that will take advantage of the Turquoise Coast over the long weekend but some of the furry, feathered, flippered and spiky locals are getting in early and taking up the best spots before the crowds appear.
