12.01.2022 Office Picture Clarice Beckett, oil on board, signed to lower left, ‘Everlastings’ framed, 43.5cm by 33cm. Exhibited : Athenaeum Exhibition, Melbourne, 5-10th June 1923 A commentary on the work is on Page 30 of the Australasian, Saturday 9th June 1923 is below MISS BECKETT'S WORK. That tone has been sought earnestly by Miss Clarice Beckett is clear from her landscape and flower studies on view at the Athenaeum Hall, Melbourne. It is also apparent that more attention to form w...ould have improved most of the land- scape studies. While here and there de- licate atmospheric effects have been achieved, most of the Landscapes have an unpleasant wooliness that is certainly not to be found in nature.Tree form seen under any atmospheric effect is never out of drawing, and Miss Beckett's landscape fails in drawing. Her flower studies, however, are well drawn; the tonal value are true, and so is her colour; and the ar- tist reveals a thorough sympathy with her subject. "Pansies," "Daisies," "Red and White Peonies," "Mr. Sherlock's Asters," "Everlastings", and "Almond Blossom" are of especial interest. In these Miss Beckett has been successful in painting the effect of light on blossom and vase. Light effects have been the aim in the land- scape studies, and "The Easter 'Moon," "Foggy Sunrise," "Old Tram Track, Beau- maris," and "Misty Morning," successfully realise delicate atmospheric effects. #Beckett #Everlastings #painting #stilllife #tonalist #Meldrum #Athenaeum #Tusmore #Antiques #Adelaide #Australasian See more

05.01.2022 An important Colonial Australian 18-carat gold bracelet, attributed to Hogarth & Erichsen, circa 1858, the articulated bracelet consisting of seven panels with cast and chased openwork design, depicting bull rushes and Australian flora, centred by a locket, incised with the letters in monogram 'AC', opening to reveal a panel of South Australian Burra malachite, framed with an applied vine border, flanked to either side by a kangaroo and emu respectively, in replacement case. ...The Sydney firm of Julius Hogarth and Conrad E Erichsen & Co, active in Sydney 1854-61 is regarded as the premier creator of Australian 19th Century jewellery, particularly in the naturalistic style. This is one of the earliest depictions of Australian subjects in jewellery, co-inciding with emergence of the Australia's sense of self identity. This bracelet is one of five known surviving bracelets by Hogarth & Erichsen, the last in private hands. The remaining four are in institutional collections.
