21.01.2022 A slide from last week's DSF Conference. "Whilst many factors are relevant to reading, teachers must focus on the yellow route." (Stanislav Dehaene) We must teach children to work out the sounds represented by letters, SAY them, and LISTEN for the word.

20.01.2022 Also check out Alison Clarke's (no relation) video about how predictive texts are not suitable for emerging readers. https://www.youtube.com/watch

19.01.2022 'b' and 'd' often cause children a lot of confusion. Alison Perry gives a wonderful explanation of how to avoid it happening and what to do when your child cannot decide which is which. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Czzu79wgc

18.01.2022 What we used to call "Dyslexia" is now simply called "a specific difficulty in reading". It is a neurological problem and occurs as a result of a person having difficulty working with the sounds in words. It is not caused by problems with vision nor the physical condition of the body, although such conditions certainly make learning to read and write more difficult. ... It is evidenced by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor reading and decoding abilities. (Decoding is the ability to break words up into their sounds.) (Dyslexia SPELD Foundation, Perth, 2017) These difficulties are often unexpected, especially when compared with the child's other abilities. Due to the person having difficulties recognising words, there may be difficulties with comprehension (although this is not always the case) or a decreased desire to read.

17.01.2022 Parents often tell me of their frustrations with the home readers that their child/children bring home. This short video (not done by me) explains why predictable texts are NOT suitable and why I have done a complete 180 turn around and now advocate for books that help children learn to read and reinforce GOOD skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch

17.01.2022 Such a wonderful explanation of the brain and the dyslexic reader by Maryanne Wolf. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyxRIVfrxJs

16.01.2022 It is always so exciting to hear that one of my students has gone on to do amazing things. Today has been one of those days. How blessed I am to work with dyslexic students. They have such talents and creativity that I am in awe of them.

13.01.2022 Dyspraxia is often the forgotten condition - but still has a big impact on children's learning.

13.01.2022 What a brilliant analogy! Dyslexic v non-dyslexic learners. Love it!

08.01.2022 How wonderful is modern technology! An Australian (me) joining in a discussion with an American literacy tutor and online tutoring guru (Joanne Kaminski), an English maths and dyscalculia specialist (Atul Rana) and an Irish literacy and dyslexia tutor (Elaine Lingard) all talking about technology for online tutoring. Had an absolute ball! https://www.youtube.com/watch

06.01.2022 How blessed am I??? Came home from working with my Saturday students today to find this awesome arrangement had been delivered to my home. I had been anonymously nominated by one of my parents and was the recipient of a lovely Lotte and Aud arrangement. Simply gobsmacked! I love what I do and feel such joy when my students 'get it'. This just made my day!!!

06.01.2022 Just so had to share this. Soooo true.

06.01.2022 There is currently quite a bit of concern being expressed lately by those close to dyslexic people in regards to Mem Fox's article (followed up by Scholastic's article) about how reading to your child will reduce levels of illiteracy. Put simply, it won't! What it will do is give children a more powerful vocabulary, a better understanding of language and language structure and improve their creative ideas by giving them examples to follow. What will work for reducing standards of illiteracy is changing the way teachers are taught in university. Make sure they actually understand why phonemic awareness is important and how to teach reading and spelling using a structured phonics approach. Then, and only then, will our levels of illiteracy begin to decrease and the needs of our dyslexic students be catered for.

04.01.2022 Our working memory, as adults, can usually hold between 6-8 items at a time. For some students it can be as low as 2-3 items at any one time. This makes it hard for them when following instructions, reading and doing maths. When teachers give too much information at a time, it overloads the child's working memory and they stop learning. A great analysis.

02.01.2022 Welcome to Tutoring Services' page. For many children, schooling can be a struggle. They may have difficulties with reading or spelling (dyslexia) or with maths (dyscalculia). Or they may simply feel that new material is being presented too quickly and that they can't keep up. Helping students to read, spell and understand maths concepts is my passion. As a dyslexia specialist who works both face-to-face and online, it is my goal to help children gain the skills and confidence for learning - no matter where they live.

02.01.2022 This is a really interesting video on what happens to our brains when we learn to read. https://www.youtube.com/watch

01.01.2022 Want to share this, written by a colleague. Think it is so good and definitely worth the read.
