24.01.2022 While we all love our Fb, our phones, laptops, iPads and TV, (parents and kids too) - perhaps we are not talking directly to each other as much as we used to. Those constant questions that kids have can be taxing to a very busy parent but kids learn literacy just by hearing the spoken word and learn the meaning of words by the context that they are used in. So quite apart from reading which is essential to literacy development, having regular conversations with kids where we ...make eye contact and actually engage with them, aids vocabulary development and comprehension. This can be hard to achieve these days with everyone always on the run but it is so important to set up regular opportunities for it to happen. It always amazed me how the kids would come in from school hot, tired and just 'over school' and I could not get a word out of them about their day. Then at dinnertime when we were all sitting around the family table, it would all come out: the good, the bad and the ugly. Communication skills are so important; starting with being able to verbally express thoughts and feelings. The terrible twos are just about frustration at not being able to make our needs known. Literacy development starts from the time we are born; never underestimate the value of your time spent talking or reading to a child. You are a hugely important part in the development of that child's self-esteem, self-image, language and literacy skills and their general knowledge about the world we live in. Surely there can be no greater role than that or better use of our time. See more

21.01.2022 Hi everyone, Welcome to my inaugural Fb posting to introduce my Literacy Tutoring business. FrewPhonics Literacy Tutoring Service has been providing literacy support to primary and secondary students for almost 3 years now. I assist students who have dyslexia or other learning disabilities, students who have English as their second language and others who may require extra support to cope with the demands of schoolwork, assignments and exams. My primary focus is to assist ...students to improve their literacy skills so that they are able to better access the school curriculum and to fully engage in their own learning. Of equal importance to me is that as students improve, they also benefit from increased self-esteem and general confidence as a natural by-product of their success. I can honestly say that I love what I do. As most of my business comes from referrals from parents of past and present students, this Fb page is my first foray into advertising of any kind. If you know of anyone requiring my services in the Mandurah area, please ask them to contact me. Regards Robyn Frew Literacy Tutor See more

19.01.2022 Reading is an invaluable life skill.

19.01.2022 Published The Sunday Times, 10th January, 2016

16.01.2022 This article was published in The Sunday Times, January 29, 2017. It is heartening reading as I have long lamented the fact that children are currently not assessed early enough to identify literacy difficulties. Assessments should preferably take place in years 1-3 and if found necessary, intensive intervention put into place. ... Phonics knowledge and phonemic awareness is nothing new. It worked very well for generations of children until it became 'unpopular' and the 'whole language' approach became more favoured. For some children, connecting words and ideas to pictures over time works for them. A great many other children require more explicit phonics instruction to make sense of the English language and to develop good reading skills. Without good literacy skills, children are unable to access all areas of the curriculum that involve the written word. They fall behind their peers and often come to believe they are unintelligent. This can lead to poor self esteem and a general lack of confidence which affects the child socially, emotionally and academically. If your child struggles at school and is not progressing well in their literacy development, you may be considering a tutor. I offer a phonics based program, designed by literacy consultants in conjunction with Macquarie University, and proven to be highly effective in assisting children learn to read effectively. I have been teaching literacy skills for over 8 years to children from the ages of 5-16 years. I have an excellent rapport with my students and receive great personal reward in their achievements. After all, there is no more important skill set than reading and writing. As I tell my students, ' if we can read well, we can research and learn anything.' An initial assessment costs $75 and helps to identify gaps in your child's phonics and sight word knowledge, and plots their reading and comprehension skills and spelling age. From this information, an individual program is tailored to target your child's literacy needs. Tutoring sessions run for 45 minutes at a cost of $40 per session. Don't delay. Give your child the best start in life; a good education and self-empowerment. Regards Robyn Frew Literacy Tutor

14.01.2022 Published 29/12/15 The West Australian newspaper. ....keep kids reading over the holidays

14.01.2022 This article published by The West Australian newspaper on 9th December, 2015 acknowledges that phonics is an effective and proven way to teach ALL of our kids to read. Children with a learning disability in particular, benefit from an explicit and systematic method of teaching literacy but many children who do not fall into this category who ' just do not get it' also advance much more quickly through improved phonics knowledge (letter/sound correspondence) and phonemic awareness (being able to hear and identify fragmented sounds within words.)

14.01.2022 The recent article in The West Australian calls into question the proposed end of Year 1 phonics Test. It cites principals' concerns about schools being ranked according to results, like the Naplan tests. In my opinion, schools should be about the education of our children. Many students referred to me improve their literacy skills greatly with improved phonics knowledge. If children were tested in year 1 to see whether they were picking up the foundational reading skills, we... could then assist those that were not through explicit phonics instruction, that is, ensuring that children not only know the alphabet but also the corresponding sounds, know long and short vowels, when to apply them etc. Currently we wait til year 3 Naplan testing and even then, phonics instruction and remedial reading lessons are not readily available at school. Many children benefit more from one-on- one instruction particularly when they are years behind their peers. Phonics testing in year 1 would be a very helpful diagnostic tool and should be viewed as such. It is not about protecting the business needs or reputations of individual schools. It is about supporting the learning needs of our children in a timely manner, not waiting until their self-esteem and academic progress has been impeded. Early intervention is the key. See more

12.01.2022 Hi everyone, I have a few spaces left for tutoring so if you know of any parents looking for a literacy tutor, I would appreciate your referral. Perhaps you know of a parent who is concerned about their child's recent Naplan results or their child's general confidence at school. ... I have been running my tutoring home business for 5 years now with great success. I love helping struggling readers and kids who have other literacy concerns to achieve in this area. Witnessing my students' improved self-esteem and a positive attitude to their learning is also very rewarding. Interested parents can contact me on 0428449652 or email me on [email protected] Thank you.

10.01.2022 I have for so long wondered why we don't assess children in school years 1 - 3. Early intervention for children who are not steadily progressing in their literacy skills can make a huge difference to their educational outcomes in later years. This is particularly true for students with Dyslexia or who other learning disabilities, and for children who have English as their second language but it is also true for children who just need more explicit teaching. A no brainer... hopefully this will happen soon.
