07.01.2022 Thanks to Autism Level UP for sharing. I also want to add CHILDREN to this. The culture of thinking we always know what's best for our children and not encoura...ging them to be active participants in the decisions made about them; how they spend their time, how they dress, what they eat, who they play with and how they learn.. These are all important living skills that allowing autonomy and encouraging choice helps to build. Little people are people too. Seriously. So many times I see children called ungrateful or selfish or rude because they don't enjoy what has been chosen for them. Last week, while I was running a live on how to handle situations where our children are so distressed they lash out, I had a woman in the comment section asking me repeatedly: "Oh, so you want children to be ruling the roost, do you?" Is this really what we're thinking? Do we truly believe our children will take over the world and crush us under their little feet? Our children love us. They look to us for connection and safety. Even when they're distressed. Even when they shout at us. Even when they're lashing out. Even when they tell us to go away or that they hate us. Many of us become more distressed because we continue to attempt to apply the same parenting philosophies and approaches as previous generations when our children's brains are changing. Time to let go of how previous generations did it and move forward into connection and collaboration. We have so much to learn from our children. . . . KF
