13.01.2022 Information for teachers on our "History Day"...... Throughout history Beer has played a considerable role in daily life as water, especially in ancient times was often very unsafe to drink as there were not the filtration methods we have today. As part of the "History of Writing" activity students get to see the oldest pictographic inscription which is actually a payment document where people are paid with a ration of beer. The students explore how pictographic writing comp...onents were differentiated. How could you write pictographically a vessel of beer as opposed to a vessel of water? The seal of Queen Pu-abi that the students use in the Ancient Seals activity shows her drinking beer through straws from a large pot. Many of the tombs in ancient Egypt contained models of ancient breweries. In fact it is often found that wherever there was a bakery you also found a brewery. Why? So what was beer like in ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia? Experimental archaeology is the process of taking a theory about an ancient process, looking at the information found in excavations and then experimenting using this research to see if the theory of the process actually works. Here is a program from the British Museum on just that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izpoexYN1-8 See more

05.01.2022 A very good Zoom presentation by the Oriental Institute in Chicago about Hattusa, the Hittite capital. The Hittites rivalled Egypt during the reign of Ramses the Great as seen in the famous resulting treaties of Kadesh and again on the Temple in Thebes and Karnak. After the death of Tutankhamun his widow Ankesunamen pleaded with the Hittite king for help, but that is another story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xym2i7XbhIE
05.01.2022 Last week the Tutroadshow attended St Pius X College at Kotara with both the Roadshow and a full history day, presented to almost 300 students over two days. One of the History Day hands on lessons was on "Seals from the Ancient World". They learnt about seals and how they developed in ancient times, why they were important and were challenged trying to work out where we use seals today. In fact we use seals in one form or another every day. Your PIN code is your security se...al. When you sign for that parcel that the courier just delivered your signature is your seal. When you buy a bottle of milk if you find the seal broken you don't drink the milk do you? Why, because it could have been tampered with. Seals were an integral part of life in the ancient world and some we quite fancy. The students get to make seal impressions on clay using our many seals. They get to keep the seal impression which are called "Bullae". They then get to design their own seal. What imagery represents you? A surfer? A footballer? You love bike riding, dancing or whatever. Your surname represents your family. Chris Hill, Bill Carpenter, Sue Smith and Wayne French all have trades or locations in their surname. Some of us have less obvious names. My surname is "Kelsey". Type it into Google and I find out it means "Ships Victory" so I could design a seal with a ship under sail on it. The lesson opens up a whole new way of thinking and tests the ability to analyse, research and design. History does teach us a lot if we are willing to look hard enough. 05.01.2022 Lately, we have been receiving a lot of requests to do a week dedicated to objects that aren’t currently on display at the OI Museum. Well, that week is finally... here! The OI has many stelae in its collection, including this funerary stela of an official named Kaka and his wife Benit (off display, photo 1). The OI has nine such stelae, but only one is currently on display, which is the stela of a regional noble Uha (on display, photo 2). The funerary stela of Kaka and Benit shows how the deceased could be provided with food and drink for eternity in different waysby leaving actual food/images of food in the tomb, or through reciting a voice offering that specified what food was desired.
