22.01.2022 MARKET UPDATE Due to the impact to the Hospitality industry most market prices have decreased significantly. Williams pears are still in season and in my opinion are the best eating by far. I expect the lemons to be fantastic value for Easter this year to go with the traditional seafood feast that we will be having - albeit with a smaller group! All berries have eased back again this week, but as with last week, I think strawberries, raspberry and blackberries are prob...ably better than the blueberries. Apples, pears and grapes are all fantastic and the quantities of Australian pomegranates arriving at the markets continues to grow. Most veg prices have crashed at market with zucchini, Broc, and eggplant are all much better value. I am delighted to say that all of our asparagus this week is Australian; we should help the locals when we can! Red caps, corn and all cucumbers are cheap and getting cheaper this week. Tomatoes have eased, except the Roma which is still scarce. Celery has eased a little bit is still very expensive. The collapse of the food service industry has seen all sorts of restaurant lines oversupplied that should see price fall as growers adjust. One question I am regularly asked concerns fresh Ginger. People who know Ginger will not buy the new season, softer no skin Ginger that many of the supermarkets are trying to sell. They tell me no matter what the price difference (it can be double) they will happily pay the difference to secure the old season traditional hard skinned ginger. 20.01.2022 MARKET UPDATE Navel oranges are getting sweeter and better eating every week. These will become our preferred variety over the winter as we switch from Valencia’s. At home, I squeeze a fresh juice every day and blend that with half a ruby grapefruit; it’s a great start to the day. Pink Lady apples are hitting their straps now, they are well priced and absolutely delicious. All the apples are very good too. Crimson seedless are still the pick of the grapes, there are major dr...amas in overseas markets and the domestic consumer is doing well thanks to that. Gold kiwi are available at market, and limes remain excellent value. The flood of Queensland strawberries that would normally start to dribble in this week are running late as Queensland is experiencing their coldest start to winter for 100 years. Quality is excellent and price will ease. In veg Corn looks like it’s easing in price towards the weekend as the new season Queensland crops gather momentum. Chinese wombok cabbage, Dutch carrots, parsnips and swedes are all good value and it appears broccoli is on the way back also. Cauli are also easing in prices. Tomatoes spiked in price last week with a low harvest but I expect the market will quickly ease as we enter the peak of the Queensland season and combines ramp up. This weekend is a long weekend in NSW and with eased restrictions on both sides of the border the hope is a boost to our industry. However, with that increased unpredictable demand will come product shortages. Baby spinach is almost unattainable at market at the moment and we are fortunate our illustrious market buyer Karl has kept supply up. Avocados are well priced and quality is sound. See more

04.01.2022 MARKET UPDATE There are lots of limes available at the moment. Strictly speaking, that’s not quite correct, there is the same amount as normal available but with all the bars shut, the supply to retail has increased dramatically. Let’s hope the State governments move through the easing levels quickly. You will notice that we have switched to the Hass Avocadoes. How good is that. Due to lower hospitality demand price is reasonable. White grapes are fast finishing up but wil...l have excellent quality crimson seedless right through winter. All the apples are eating well and this week we are featuring Granny Smith apples. The old heads in the industry used to tell me that Grannies are early on a cooking apple but after Anzac Day, they are more mature and sweeter and from that time on, are an eating apple first and foremost. Bananas are in great supply at the moment and value price and grapefruit from Queensland is now in full swing and eating very well. Don’t forget Mum this weekend, we have limited number of edible flowers available and Strawberries and Scott now thinks its fine to visit Mum order an extra punnet and take to mum. Other very good value hard vegetables include Jap pumpkin and sweet potato. With greens, both beans and spinach have eased in price. Cherry tomatoes and fennel both continue to be very good value and excellent quality. Vegetable supplies from Queensland are increasing and continued good weather up north should ensure this situation continues. Mushrooms are the supply problem of the week with harvest very low and as a result price as spiked by a few dollars for this weekend.
