21.01.2022 Zane Corowa with sword fish, circa 1940 Zane Corowa’s fishing boat Vendetta taken in 1962. Robert Corowa was born at Cudgen in 1908 and a well-remembered member of the local South Sea Islander community. At 17 Robert started cutting cane in Cudgen as part of Bob Long’s gang. He spent most of his spare time reading western stories, which prompted his mates to give him the nick-name of Zane after the author Zane Grey. In 1929 he left cane cutting to concentrate on commerc...ial fishing. Zane went to work with Sam Sess but in the late 1930s he bought his own boat, an 18ft. clinker named Sadie. When prawns became popular, he purchased the trawler Vendetta, which you can see in the photo above. He successfully worked prawns for 10 years until serious trouble with his eyes forced him to sell his trawler and he retired to live at Chinderah. Zane fought for the rights of South Sea Islander and Aboriginal people and became involved with the South Sea Islanders and Aboriginal Advancement League, often acting as their spokesman. He worked hard to break down discrimination and to better working and living conditions for his people. He was a member of the Aboriginal Housing Co-op and was heavily involved with this organisation until the opening of the Minjungbul museum in Kirkwood Road in 1984. Although he never played football himself he was for many years one of the backbones of All Blacks football club. He was secretary, treasurer and a delegate to Tweed League. Corowa Park, on the corner of Chinderah Rd and Terrace St in Chinderah, is named after Zane who sadly passed away in 1986. 19.01.2022 On September 15, 1907, at about 8:30 p.m., Murwillumbah was shocked by the sight of a fire at Dainer’s Bakery. Many of the townspeople had been startled by the clanging of bells and shouts of FIRE!, and rushed out to see what was happening. It was reported that Vincent Dainer, the 14-year-old son of baker, Edward Dainer, first sounded the alarm, after he and his brother noticed smoke coming into their kitchen, where they were playing cards. Murwillumbah was devastated by ...the fire. The Main Street was wiped out. Sixty business premises were destroyed, with 100,000 worth damage done. 15.01.2022 This historic photo includes Community Leaders: Zane Corowa, Nasuven Enares, Wally Mussing, Lerou Leichhardt and Faith Bandler at the CWA Hall Coolangatta, c. 1950s. Their collective and individual activism led to increased rights for Aboriginal and South Sea Islander people. And so, their legacies and family names exemplify an integral part of Tweed’s history. Like the Faith Mussing Bandler Park in Tumbulgum, named in honour of Dr Faith Bandler OAM who spent much of her li...fe fighting for justice. Dr Bandler cited stories of her father, Peter Mussing’s harrowing experience as a slave labourer as motivation for her activism, My father was taken from his Island, which is the Island of Ambryn, that makes up the eighty-odd Islands of the nation of Vanuatu, at a very young age. He was about twelve or thirteen in the year 1883, and he was forcibly taken with other men and women and brought to Mackay. Born Ida Lessing Faith Mussing in 1918, Faith was one of eight children raised in Tumbulgum and later Murwillumbah, where she attended high school. In World War II, Faith served in the Australian Women’s Land Army and worked on farms growing food to feed Australians fighting overseas. Faith was actively involved in the peace movement of the 1950s. In 1956, she was instrumental in setting up the Australian Aboriginal Fellowship, which led the campaign to abolish the NSW state government-controlled Aborigines Welfare Board (originally as the Aborigines Protection Board). Dr Bandler was also instrumental in the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines & Torres Strait Islanders’ campaign for a national referendum to change the Constitution. Since helping to win the referendum, Faith actively supported Aboriginal Land Rights and reconciliation. In 1997 she was awarded a Human Rights Medal. 04.01.2022 On this important day of remembrance, we honour all the local men and women who have served their nation. We Will Remember Them. Lest We Forget. World War Two POW Private David (Dave) Runge was a driver (Division 22 Brigade 8 DIV AASC) with the Australian Army Service Corps from 1940-1945. Private Runge was interned for more than three years by the Imperial Japanese Army.... Born in 1922 in Murwillumbah, Dave Runge enlisted in the Army in 1940 aged 18 years. According to Australian Government war records, in 1942, Dave was reported missing in Malaya. By late 1943 he is recorded as being held captive in Fukuoka camp, Japan. At Fukuoka camp, Dave was tortured for a week for a minor infraction. He was tied up by Imperial Guards and left outside, where he was made to kneel on a bamboo pole with another bamboo pole placed behind his knees. Also, it was reported that guards jumped on his legs. As Dave told the Northern Star newspaper, I was in the guardhouse for seven days, and for the last four days was forced to stand at attention. I was then carried into the dispensary and after ten days both my legs had to be amputated, (1945). Dave is pictured here after his rescue, being carried by his fellow soldiers down the gangplank of HMS Formidable, Sydney, 13 October 1945. Also shown, is Dave with his two Aunties, Aggie Mussing and (right) Mrs Green. 02.01.2022 On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians observe one minute’s silence each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. 11 November is universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the First World War. After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in bot...h World Wars. Private Richard August Eilola of Murwillumbah (pictured here), was a signaller with the 52nd Battalion on the Western Front in the First World War. Tragically, Private Eilola died on the 25th September 1917 at the Ypres Front from wounds received to his body and legs, after being caught by fragments from a high explosive shell. He died shortly after and is buried in a soldiers cemetery in Belgium. According to reports given to the Red Cross by men from his company, Private Eilola was a nice lad, and always smiling. 01.01.2022 Today is World AIDS Day, and this year’s theme is Now More Than Ever. The day is about raising awareness and aims to break down barriers for people living with HIV. It is also a time to commemorate people who have died of AIDS-related conditions or other conditions associated with HIV. Recently the Museum launched a digital exhibition and collection project called Small Town Queer. For this project, Museum staff collaborated with the local LGBTQIA+ community, including ...HIV/AIDS Activists and Educators. Now More Than Ever it is vital for cultural organisations like ours, to represent, collect and share these stories. Such as that of Northern Rivers Queer Icon, Tobin Saunders... Tobin is an Activist, Performer, and Educator. He began work as a Community Health Promotion Officer for ACON Northern Rivers in 2010. Taking a holistic view of sexual health, Tobin brought his creative flair to ACON’s outreach program, promoting and delivering campaigns. Tobin is also thought to be the first person in Australia to ever come out on live television as HIV positive, which he did during his involvement with Celebrity Big Brother in 2002.
