21.01.2022 As we all adjust to life under the new ‘social distancing’ regime, we begin to appreciate the things we’re missing, which for many of us includes live music. Your Jazz Club Committee made the voluntary decision to cancel the March and April gigs out of concern for the health of members, visitors and musos alike; then we were left with no choice when the axe came down on places of entertainment, including the Condong Bowlo. The immediate future remains uncertain, and we on the... Committee are absorbing what little information we have with a view to recommencing gigs as soon as it’s both lawful, and safe, to do so. Given that both State and Federal Governments are counselling against any rapid return to normality we’ve also taken the decision to officially cancel the May and June gigs, while leaving our options open for July onwards. Should we receive the longed for announcement that COVID-19 has departed our shores we’ll be ready to hit the ground running on the last Friday in July, but should that not prove possible, then we have provisional plans in place for August, then September, and so on until we can finally resume the lives we once took for granted. We’re all being deprived one way or another at present, but spare a thought for the musos who rely on open venues for their livelihood. As the propaganda keeps reminding us, we’re all in this together, and we’ll be back in business as soon as possible. So stay safe, watch this space, and be assured that we’re still alive and keen to get back to normal. David Field, President

15.01.2022 Well Done Adam! I have sent a message to you

14.01.2022 We held a Committee meeting last Thursday to stare into the crystal ball and consider all the factors that dictate when we’ll be able to put on more gigs. Condong Bowlo is back open, but under strict limits, and sooner or later the Queensland border will be re-opened. But the real issue that dictates when we can hold more gigs is the ongoing ‘social distancing’ requirement. This has two serious implications for our way forward. The first is that in order to cover the cost of ...the bands that we hire we need a certain minimum number of ‘derrieres on chairs’. This will obviously vary with the cost of the band, but most months we struggle to get over the line even with a house fuller than social distancing would currently permit. But the second point is the more telling one. Anyone who looks even fleetingly at the ‘crowd’ photographs that we publish monthly on our website and in our Newsletter will appreciate that our members and visitors do not ‘social distance’ instead they huddle in happy groups to enjoy the music while catching up with old friends. The size of our stage also makes it near impossible for visiting musos to observe the regulation distance. Bottom line gigs as we wish to hold them cannot be organised for as long as social distancing is required. We have therefore unanimously decided that we are obliged to cancel our July and August gigs. We have recommenced our monthly Committee meetings in order to closely monitor the situation as it develops, and will take the first opportunity to get back to normal. We’ll also be sending out these regular e-mails to keep you all advised of the state of play. There’s perhaps one silver lining to all this. Since there have now been no gigs since our last one in February, which has resulted in almost half the membership year being ‘gig-less’, we’ve also taken the decision to extend current membership until 31st December, then take renewals for the first 6 months of 2021 at half the going rate. We can then revert to the normal membership year from July 2021 onwards. We miss the gigs as much as you do! 09.01.2022 Wahoo! Hope we see you all tomorrow night

09.01.2022 Well, what a marvellous treat we experienced yesterday with a gracious offering from some very talented musicians! We had 3 sets from Bubbl’n Jazz consisting of - Glenn Shepherd - Keyboard Les Kafoa - Drums... Bob Young - Saxaphone Peter McLaughin - Bass Kim Thackeray - Guitar Kevin Collins - Vocals Thea Shepherd - Vocals And a surprise set from Saxology with - Marcus Nassner - Soprano Sax Jake Muggleton - Alto Sax John Myers - Tenor Sax Bob Young - Baritone Sax We had a full house as members reserved their places early after receiving the email of news we would have a special event. Everything was COVID compliant and we even managed to have a fun raffle! The committee cannot thank all the musicians enough for taking time out and putting on a delightful afternoon of musical content. We hope to see you all soon

08.01.2022 An Update from our President that’s actually a week late!! Apologies . Here in the Northern Rivers we seem to have escaped the ‘clusters’, but it only stays that way because we are a relatively sparse population and we know how to do the right thing.... Unfortunately that has implications for all aspects of our social lives, and at our meeting yesterday your Committee unanimously, but with considerable regret voted to cancel all gigs for the remainder of 2020. We had little choice, given that the social distancing requirements imposed on our venue, Condong Bowling Club, render it impossible to fill the concert room and have bands in close proximity on our compact stage. We’ll continue to monitor the situation, and will let members know immediately if we spot any light on the horizon. The only matter other than gigs that currently concerns us is our inability to hold our AGM in the immediate future. It was scheduled for October, as usual, but our Constitution allows it to be held at any time before 31st December. Again we’ll keep you fully posted. Chins up, eyes front and keep playing those records, tapes and CDs to remind us of what we’re hoping to hear live when all this is over. There’s a lot of good stuff available on-line as well, so keep the faith in these uncertain times. David Field, President
