05.01.2022 FIRE UPDATE: There are positive signs that the Duranbah fire is getting under control this morning, following a mammoth effort by RFS Firefighters overnight. However, the fire remains active but is burning within containment lines, according to RFS Far North Coordinator and Incident Controller for Duranbah Stephen Quinlan. Mr Quinlan said the water-bombing helicopter will continue alongside ground crews across the weekend in a bid to hold the containment lines. "It's looking ...really good at the moment (9.42am)," he said. "We are still concerned with the high winds expected tomorrow, and there's still a chance the fire could jump our containment lines. "But we're doing everything we can to keep the fire contained and there's positive signs at this point." The fire has now burnt through almost 300 hectares and was revised down following estimates it could reach 400 hectares yesterday. There are no homes at risk, but residents are being asked to monitor the situation throughout the next three days. More to come in the afternoon. See more

03.01.2022 FIRE UPDATE: Two water-bombing helicopters are currently assisting around 25 firefighters to contain a blaze at Tanglewood along Clothiers Creek Road (east side of the M1). The Weekly spoke with NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Inspector Angela Daly at 2.30pm, who said the fire remained uncontained. The fire has grown to 70 hectares and attempts to back burn from Clothiers Creek Road contained some of the fire, but it was able to get around the break in a southerly direction, due to high winds. "No homes are in immediate danger, but residents in the area need to stay up-to-date and know what to do if the fire does come their way," Inspt Daly said. Inspt Daly said the fire had come as a shock after recent rain, but grasses had "cured quickly, while the undergrowth remained wet making it difficult to access the fire."
