25.01.2022 PS CHRISTABELL - very exciting times ahead for this beautiful 3 yo filly who was picked up from the breakers today! Massive thank you to Tom Willoughbyy - 'T Wi...lloughby Horse Breaking & Training' - such a fantastic job done with this lovely horse. Christabell is the very first foal of the Imported Hanovarion Stallion 'CHRISTOS' to be started under saddle, and Nicole Berry and I are super pleased after both having a ride. Her dam is PS First Lady (Furst Love/Lontano) related to the Dressage Horse of the Year winners, PS Royal Finale & PS Royal Dancer. PS Christabell under saddle is already showing a super hind leg with an awesome attitude to learn. PS Christablell won the Australian Champion Foal on Tour with the AWHA and if you check out her markings, they are the same as the stallion 'Christos'...........so the future is bright for this super horse! Lots of horses to view for sale at Ponderosa Stud See more

25.01.2022 Great day today, well done to the competition winners.

25.01.2022 It was great to be in Alice and do a clinic to help some very keen horsemen and women. It also allowed us to catch up and see how some horses who were broken in by Tom are going now. This young combination have grown so much together in just 10 months from being broken in. Keep up the great work

25.01.2022 Breaker Another breaker for Ponderosa Stud broken in at TWHBT and ready to go home. Safe Responsive Relaxed is what we strive for in all horses that come to us. Even with a little spook at the car starting this gelding knows how to calmly react and come back to his rider.

24.01.2022 This youngster was with us for breaking and training. He was a bit of a character and we look forward to keeping an eye on digger once he hits the race track

24.01.2022 Did you see the 2018 AACTA awards last night? Sweet Country won many awards including best film for 2018. It is such a honour to have worked on such an iconic Australian movie. If you haven’t seen it yet do yourself a favour and put it on your to do list. Keep an eye out for Tom who plays Constable Minty and our team of horses. #Australianmovie #horsesonmovies #SweetCountry #AACTA2018

22.01.2022 Just taking a quick nap... Who needs a bed when you have quiet horses #onset #Australianmovie #horsesonmovies

21.01.2022 Same horse in last post. At the end of a horses first ride we really like for the horse to stay relaxed through its walk to trot transition. If we can manage this it will allow us to keep stepping the horse up every ride it has. You’ll see this horse have a slip and minor panic but with the one rein stop [our safety brake] it allows us to regain control along with establishing a stop.

21.01.2022 Extremely awesome place to send your horse for training! Not only has my horse learnt so much but so have I. Highly recommend you book a lesson with Tom if you want to improve your horsemanship skills or regain lost confidence. Nice arena too

21.01.2022 Trainer Ponderosa stud First Lady has been in training with us for the last 4 weeks. This mare has had a few years off to have foals and was brought back into work by Tom. As expected after a few years off she had become set in her ways but by the end of the 4 weeks she has become accepting and willing to try. Here she is being ridden by her owner before leaving.

20.01.2022 First ride for this breaker. Here you can see this horse really processing everything that’s being asked. She never refused anything Miles asked she is only trying to figure out where the applied pressure is coming from and what the answer is. Another great job by Miles

20.01.2022 Breaker Our own young breaker having his first ride. Bred by Bill and Barb Willoughby this little man has the best temperament you will find in a horse. We can’t wait to see how he progresses. don’t mind the young Willoughby horse trainer in the background giving her Dad advice.

20.01.2022 Merry Christmas to us We can’t wait to pick up Toms new saddle hand made and crafted by Bill Willoughby. These saddles are truly the best investment you can make for yourself and your horses. Check out Willwin saddlery on Facebook and choose them for all your leather work needs, lots of great Christmas presents too.

18.01.2022 First ride on Molly today. Up banks down banks went everywhere I pointed . So relaxed from the ratty Filly I dropped off. Thank you Tom, another happier horse in the world because of you..

18.01.2022 BREAKER Only the 4th ride for our little mate and picking up things very quickly. Moving his shoulders across and keeping a nice steady rhythm. He also has a big stop for a little guy but its important not to over do a horses stop. Getting your horse to use his hind end properly and sit in the ground for a nice stop is something that takes a lot of time and training and not something to get carried away with. For now we just want to keep his drive to stop, later on in his training this can be more fine tuned.

17.01.2022 It's in the Willoughby blood. Tonight is a special night as the late Tom Willoughby (Toms Grandfather) gets inducted into the Australian Professional Rodeo hall of fame before the Australian National Finals rodeo kicks off tomorrow. The top 15 cowboys for each event will compete to find out who will win the title. Tom has qualified for the bareback, steer wrestling and rope and tie.

17.01.2022 Well..... there is a first time for everything and I must admit Im a bit gob smacked after my lesson at Tom Willoughby’s today!

16.01.2022 Bully and Smarty leaving for their new home. We know these two horses will provide many years of fun for their new owners and we know they will be well looked after. Bully (grey) seems happy about it.

16.01.2022 So.. I rode my Palomino Quarter Horse Bronty today for the first time! He has been at T Willoughby Horse Breaking & Training for 6 weeks now and he is AMAZING!... Tom Willoughby has really done well with this boy! It was the second best day of my life SOOOO HAPPY!!! Thanks Deryck & Zayden for the photos & videos!! I will have him home in 2 weeks and I can’t wait to get him out and about!!! WOOO HOOOO! YEEEE HAH! See more

16.01.2022 Breaker This little filly is progressing nicely with this only her 4th ride. Although I’m very happy with where she is at it is important not to ask her for more then what she is ready for. Working with well bred horses often makes my job easier. This horse is bred by Bill and Barb Willoughby. If you’re after well mined and trainable horses be sure to get into contact with them.

16.01.2022 There’s nothing more special then being able to ride along side your daughter

16.01.2022 Lessons don’t always have to be in the arena Going for a trail ride with someone there to help you out is sometimes all you need, especially when the sun is shining

16.01.2022 Throwback to the Man From Snowy River Trainers Chellenge 2017. 2 years ago today Tom won the trainers challenge. What a great event it is!

15.01.2022 Is tuff work this movie business. Just waiting for our call.

15.01.2022 There can be many benefits with using a lead horse when starting young horses. Horses like this one who have never before been touched or handled by a human often feel a bit more comfortable having another horse beside them. It is also safer for the handler to get a hand on them and used to being touched without the worry of getting jumped on from the ground. These initial steps carry over when going to get on the horse for the first time as horses need to get used to the rid...er being above their eye. Using a lead horse allows you to get above the horses eye and get him comfortable with it before their first ride. This was this youngsters first day of training and it was all about getting him to move his feet, just one step at a time, when he felt the pressure on the lead rope setting him up to be able to be handled and lead from the ground.

15.01.2022 Another great lesson today with Kelly and Dusty. Kelly has plans to campdraft her horse so after a handful of lessons establishing the basic foundation that her horse needs we have now introduced live cattle. Today’s lesson was all about getting her horse to focus on the cow and to enjoy the job on hand. Lessons still available until end of this month. Please contact our page to book in.

14.01.2022 Willoughby's Last Ride In 1956 Tom Willoughby was acknowledged as Australia's best known rough rider. He is seen here winning the Australian Bull Riding Champio...nship at Brewarrina Rodeo, after which he retired from competitive riding and the same week was elected President of the Australian Rough Riders Association. His election was said to 'turn the tide' in the affairs of the Australian Rough Riders Association, as it was the first time a rough rider had taken office. His election was universally popular and his message to the audience was listened to in dead silence and with respect, like 'a father to his erring sons'. It was said no-one in attendance could help feeling that 'the slackness will be taken up'. Change was not immediate it seems; the first three motions at the AGM were defeated. They were: - That five riders from each State be elected to take the place of the Rider's Committee - That total prizemoney for the Australian Championships be increased from 500 pounds to 1000 pounds, with the Australian Buckjump championship be worth not less than 200 pounds. - That all advertised prizemoney be paid out once the first rodeo event was completed. 14.01.2022 OUTSIDE OF THE ARENA All horses before they leave our property have been on numerous rides out. From walking cattle down the road to a ride up the hill, all will have experienced the joys of rides out. There are many learning opportunities for a young (and old) horse on a ride out. From learning how to handle his ‘flight’ instinct when you come across those killer kangaroos for the first time or that funny looking bush with teeth and claws. Positively exposing horses to the changing environment outside of the arena will help him to handle situations he will face when you take him home. These two horses are here for training before they join the SA Mounted Police. No dount they will be exposed to many different situations in their career and having the right start will be setting them up for success.

14.01.2022 My first trail ride on the baby Helios with my mum and Appollo. He was such a very good boy, even after having to have a couple of weeks off. Thank you T Willoughby Horse Breaking & Training for the great foundation you have given Helios. :) :)

14.01.2022 As the new year begins we would like to thank everyone who has chosen us to break in and train their horses in 2018. It was a busy year starting with the birth of our second daughter, lots of horses booked in, the filming of High Ground up in Arnhem Land and plenty of rodeos and travelling in between. We hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas and New Years. Tom and Sasha

14.01.2022 It’s always a good day when you get time to work your own horses

13.01.2022 See you next time Alice Springs It has been great working with many different people in 2 separate clinics and private lessons over the 3 weeks since being here. It was also a special moment to see our daughter compete in her first show, she loved every minute of it! Thanks Cheryl and Cutie pony

13.01.2022 Thank you to our fellow Australian and New Zealand soldiers who have fought for our freedom. Today we also remember their trusty steeds who were sent over to serve alongside the soldiers for our country. Ancient peoples, such as the Saxons and Scythians, used to bury a great warrior’s horse with him so that it could serve him in the afterlife. This practice was continued in some European countries until the late eighteenth century. In modern times, horses are led in its master’s funeral procession with his boots reversed as a sign that a warrior has fallen in battle Horses are truly amazing animals, today we thank them also.

13.01.2022 Roping Clinic in Berry Springs, NT. Contact Russell to book in.

13.01.2022 ***Breaker*** This is a young mare coming into her last week of training. We are very happy with where she is at, although she has still got some minor issues to iron out. As seen in the video she picks up the wrong lead but you will see Miles not make a big deal, he simply breaks her back to a trot and asks her to try again. This way she will not work her self up she will simply look for another answer to what’s being asked of her. Then you will see in her back up she wants to drop her shoulder Miles again doesn’t make a big deal he will just hold all of the correct aids on until she gives him what he wants. Followed by a release of pressure which tells the horse that is what he was looking for.

12.01.2022 First ride for this little horse. All Miles is wanting is for this horse to stay calm and try to understand anything thing being asked of him. We won’t ask too much of them at this point as they must understand the basics before getting stepped up. We put a lot of ground work into all horses to make the transition from the ground to their back much easier for the horses to understand and safer for us as riders.

12.01.2022 We love seeing and hearing about all horses that have come to us over the years.

12.01.2022 A few more days left to enter for a chance to win a spot at this rodeo fun day. If you’ve ever wanted to have a go at rodeo but not sure where to start then this is for you. Follow instructions on how to enter below

10.01.2022 And that’s a wrap. For the past 10 weeks we have been up in Arhnem Land and Kakadu filming an Australian movie called High Ground with 17 horses. Our horses did such a great job, there were some long hot days, lots of standing around and different people on and off their backs but they never let us down. Now they are taking a few days rest before the journey back down south. Make sure to keep an eye out for the movie in the next 12-18months. #highground #Australianmovie #horsesonmovies

10.01.2022 #drop_your_beautiful_horse_head_challenge I hope I haven’t offended our other 11 horses by choosing just one

09.01.2022 Breaker Some horses can be very sensitive to the way your seated in the saddle and to everything else your asking from it’s back. This can often be because of lack of confidence in their own ability, this horse has a lot of ability but his lack of confidence is holding him back. So instead of causing non necessary arguments we are trying to build his confidence through letting him hold a lot of responsibility in his own training. In this video Tom is trying to stay with a l...oose reign as much as possible to let the horse know he isn’t asking anything more or less then to just travel kindly. As previously the horse would over react to what was being asked. Staying relaxed and consistent as a rider and trying to let that relay through to the horse is important when establishing a solid foundation and letting the horse have trust in his own ability and having confidence in his rider. 09.01.2022 A really nice gelding coming into his final week of training.

08.01.2022 Quote of the day Something we often see is someone wanting to buy their perfect horse but they have a specific colour in mind. Something Tom will always tell anyone with this criteria is colour dosen’t make a horse go any better all horse colours are beautiful

07.01.2022 Some great memories filming #highground. Working with amazing people, seeing beautiful #arhnemland and of course our horses being superstars on set. And we’ve just heard highground is coming to cinemas 2021. @smile_simonbaker #callanmulvey #twilloughbyhorsebreaking #TWHBT #horses #movie #horsesonfilm #moviehorse #cinema2021

04.01.2022 Trainer Ponderosa Stud Donna Meyer too has had a few years off as a brood mare and recently brought back into work by Tom. Having just being broken in and then turned out to get in foal she is still a very green horse, however has become responsive and willing of what is being asked of her. Her owners and riders are very happy with the progress and enjoyed going for their first ride around on her before taking her home.

02.01.2022 A few weeks ago we were asked to go to Prince Alfred College in Adelaide and do a talk on rodeo. It was great to give a few of the guys a go at roping and some education on the sport.

01.01.2022 APRA national finals have been and gone for another year. Here are a few highlights over the 4 days. Congratulations to all title winners.

01.01.2022 If there’s Willoughby in the name they’re bound to be a true horseman/woman. Toms uncle Bill the first winner of the MFSR challenge. Tom himself was the first winner of the colt starting challenge at the festival when it started in 2017 ... A great festival showcasing some of the best horsemen/women in this country.

01.01.2022 Update Sorry for our page being extremely quiet lately. Many may already know but unfortunately back in April Tom was injured when a horse kicked and came down on top of his knee snapping his ACL and MCL. He had a knee reconstruction and was given 12 months before getting back to rodeo and full time horse work. This was a tricky time for our small family business but Miles Curr has done an amazing job finishing breaking in and training all the horses under Toms guidance from then until now. 3 months on and recovery is going very well with Tom starting to get back into the saddle. Private lessons are now available again and upcoming clinic details will be announced in the coming weeks.

01.01.2022 Be sure to head over to our Instagram account to stay up to date and see some of the crazy things Tom gets up too! First ride for this breaker #thethingswedo #hangon #rodeo #bullriding #cowboy #twilloughbybreaking #TWHBT
