22.01.2022 Can you spot the difference? One is sterile, One is clean. The difference between sterile and clean is that no bacteria, fungi or viruses can survive the sterilization process. When something is clean with disinfectant a small amount of these harmful organisms remain. We take infection control seriously and so should you. An ounce of prevention can spare you a potentially harmful infection later.

09.01.2022 Achilles Tendinopathy One of the most common chronic injuries patients present to the podiatrist with involves the Achilles tendon. Some of the difficulties in successfully treating problems with the Achilles are; Accurate diagnosis: There are multiple structures that can be involved in Achilles pain, however their treatments can be quite different. One treatment that may help one type, can in fact worsen another. So firstly correct diagnosis is the key. Your Podiatrist can ...refer for xray, ultrasound and MRI imaging if required. Secondly; the factors contributing to your Achilles pain which include Age, gender, muscle imbalances, medications, footwear, training/activities, training technique and BIOMECHANICS. Even the mechanics of your lower back, hip, knee and ankle can all play a large role in the development of Achilles pain? Twinkletoes Podiatry uses a wide range of assessment & diagnostic tools to ensure accurate diagnosis. We also utilise a wide range of treatment modalities in order to achieve the best results for our patients. These include; manual therapy, joint mobilisations, kinesio/Rocktaping, sports taping, footwear advice, activity assessment & modification advice, dry needling, low level laser therapy (LLLT) and many more... If you have been experiencing any heel/Achilles related pain call Twinkletoes Podiatry to make an appointment with Talysha, so she can help get you back on your feet in no time.

08.01.2022 Are you going camping over Christmas? Will you shower barefoot in Public showers? Athlete's foot (also known as ringworm of the foot, tinea pedis, tinea pedum and moccasin foot) is a common contagious fungal infection of the skin that causes scaling, flaking, and itchiness of an affected area. Athlete's foot is caused by fungi such as Epidermophyton floccosum or fungi of the Trichophyton genus or Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The disease is typically transmitted in moist comm...unal areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses, and requires a warm moist environment, (e.g., the inside of a shoe) to incubate. The condition typically affects the feet, but may infect or spread to other areas of the body such as the groin and tends to spread to areas of skin that are kept hot and moist, such as with insulation, body heat, and sweat. The fungal agents responsible for infection may be picked up by walking barefoot in an infected area or using an infected towel. Infection can be prevented by limiting the use of occlusive footwear and remaining barefoot. Globally, it affects about 15% of the population. Treatments Without medication, Athlete's foot resolves in 3040% of cases and topical antifungal medication consistently produce much higher percentages of cure. Medication Conventional treatment typically involves daily or twice daily application of a topical medication in conjunction with hygiene measures outlined in the above section on prevention. Keeping feet dry and practicing good hygiene is crucial to preventing reinfection. Severe or prolonged fungal skin infections may require treatment with oral antifungal medication. Zinc oxide-based diaper rash ointment may be used; talcum powder can be used to absorb moisture to kill off the infection. See more

01.01.2022 We are at that time again as the new school year approaches to talk about the right fit for your feet. Many shoe shops will try to convince you that the shoe will wear in or that bigger is better as you don’t have to buy more later on. So what is it that we look for in a properly fitted school shoe? There is no single best shoe for one child as all children are different. The fit can be affected by their height, weight, shape, biomechanics and stage of growth development... so choosing the correct shoe is imperative. Children won’t always communicate about how shoes feel but they do know pain so if a new shoe hurts when first put on then it’s not the right one. You also have to consider what activities they will be doing in the footwear being chosen. If it’s a particular sport the right sports shoe should be selected for that sport. Tips for purchasing shoes at any age: Choose a store that measures your feet to ensure best fit Buy shoes in the afternoon as the foot will be larger at this time. Always walk around in the shoes before purchasing, checking for comfort and tight spots When standing you should be able to wriggle your toes. Ensure the sole of the shoe is firm and bends across the ball of the foot The material breathes and is flexible leather is the best for this If you are concerned about your child’s footwear, walking, flat feet, shin splints etc why not book in for a consultation with our Podiatrist.
