25.01.2022 STAY CONSISTENT Training hard is a key element to ensuring progress and improvement. But it doesn't stand alone. WE ALSO NEED TO BE CONSISTENT.... Being consistent in all areas of a child's life helps to improve behaviour. Children require a predictability and need to understand expectations in order to manage behaviour over a long period of time. Just like we are consistent on the Mat with our golden rules to develop constructive behavioural patterns we also apply this to physical activity. Gross and fine motor skills require not just hard training, but consistent training in order to improve. Learning and muscle memory come from the brain, therefore, in order for the brain to develop new neural pathways to perform a new technique, it has to go through the motions repetitively and consistently to reaffirm that this is the new technique the body needs to remember. Whether your training is face-to-face or virtual, practice is practice! See you at the Virtual Dojo! #OSHA

21.01.2022 MINDFUL MONDAY On the back of the Gradings it's important to regroup and reflect on your performance. Earning a new belt is a huge step and is usually indicative of success in various areas, however too often, kids and adults alike, forget to self-assess and look at where they think they need to improve for next time. Reflection is integral to the learning process and encourages you to learn more about yourself as, not just a martial artist but you as a whole person. Teachers... use self reflection for academic purpose and sports coaches use it for performance purpose. Being able to identify your own areas of improvement also acts as an intrinsic motivator, making you feel more inspired to achieve the goal, as opposed to having your Teacher or Coach just tell you what they think you need to improve. Spend 10 minutes reflecting on how you did at the Grading, or how you did at school. Write down 3 things that you think you did well and should keep doing, and 3 things that you should consider doing next time to keep improving your performance. #reflection
21.01.2022 TWINS TUESDAY We have a strong focus on praising the student's efforts, rather than ability. As soon as students start thinking that skills are simply things they either have or do not have, this can be destructive in the long run. How will they react in the face of failure? Instead of saying, "Wow, you're really good at Karate." or "Johnny, you're so athletic!", acknowledge how the student got to that point with "You have worked really hard on that kick! It has improved a l...ot!" or "Johnny, you trained really hard today!" This can be a simple way of helping students develop better coping mechanisms when under stress or faced with a hardship because they are aware that there is a process to success that anyone can participate in. #mindset ----------------- Photo by Mish Nguyen

19.01.2022 HYDRATION! It seems we may have a battle of the water bottles at Twins! How many litres do you drink? With the weather really heating up this week, remember to bring your water bottles and stay hydrated before, during and after class! ... Drinking 2-3 litres of water per day and an extra litre for every hour of training you do helps you stay hydrated. Your body is anywhere from 60-75% water! So it is super important to keep it hydrated to function otherwise things are going to slow down. #osha
19.01.2022 FAQ FRIDAY Learning the Japanese terminology for your drills and techniques is a requirement of the Black Belt and a great way to take your training universal. If you watch videos of some of the great Karate athletes and coaches from countries in Europe, Asia or South America for instance they use the Japanese terminology throughout their instructions. It's beautiful to think that Karate has become a universal language, no matter what language you actually speak, Japanese ter...minology remains the same and you can train anywhere in the world. Another reason is to appreciate the importance of the tradition and learn about the rich culture that cultivated Shotokan Karate. Using these terms can help us understand a completely new culture and shows respect and appreciation for the pioneers of the martial art. #osha
19.01.2022 Our students are back and ready for 2021!
18.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WARRIORS Future leaders must fail at one point or another. Without failure, they cannot develop or progress. Without failure, we cannot learn what we need to work on to become better versions of ourselves. Kids in sport experience an immense amount of pressure to perform to win or to succeed, often at the expense of developing the all important attributes of resilience and perseverance. Perseverance is not just training hard in class and practicing to get a techniqu...e correct. Perseverance in the face of failure or "loss" is one of the most important lessons a child must learn in order to understand the value of these attributes. The more practice with failure, the easier it becomes to overcome. Just like the more you practice a technique, the easier it becomes to execute. #oss

13.01.2022 There a few key things we strive for at Twins to help the students develop and become self-sufficient. 1. Create a safe space of respect and acceptance to encourage the students to explore, create and take risks. 2. Praising the effort, rather than the talent, to build the student’s confidence in their capabilities to internalise their own faith in themselves.... 3. Providing opportunities for them to take ownership and responsibility for themselves and others. 4. Provide the students with structure, yet allowing freedom to interpret and make their own decisions and mistakes. 5. Teach and demonstrate the links between responsibility, accountability and consequence. These elements are also encouraged at home and at school to ensure consistent learning so students understand that this transfers across all facets of life, not just at Karate. #osha

02.01.2022 PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN ISO We are all about exercise, but in times where our choices are limited, it is arguably more important! For children especially, structured exercise allows them a opportunity to release stored energy, stimulate learning pathways, stay physically fit and maintains routine. ... It’s also a great family activity that benefits the entire wolf pack! Martial Arts is one of the few sports that can be practiced anywhere so take advantage of your sessions and stick to your training. Goals don’t stop unless we do, and we will not stop! #oss

02.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WARRIORS Even in a single-person sport such as Karate, drilling amongst other kids working on the same or similar techniques allows them to connect. Your child does not have to play a team sport to learn about team building, they just need to be exposed to a group training environment. Not all children enjoy team sports, but may enjoy training, so it is important to do that research and select an activity that is going to motivate the child to keep attending and lea...rning. #oss
