09.01.2022 A NEW residents’ group has formed in South Fremantle to celebrate ‘community’ through festivals of light and colour and pet wash events at South Beach. Establis...hed as a non-for-profit, South Fremantle Community Association brings together business owners, artists and events managers to promote a more inclusive and safe community in the popular food, entertainment and beach destination. What better way than the 'Festival of Lights' on November 8, the first of two festivals planned. The South Fremantle 'Festival of Colour' will be held early next year. Instrumental in the light festival, South Ward Councillor Maria Vujcic told Freo StreetWise surplus funds from annual festivals will be used to sponsor local services and school projects. This is a great way to connect with the community through festivals and public events and provide much-need services in the community, she told FSW.Saroor’s Satnam Singh Sidhu (Sid) is the inaugural chair of SFCA; accountant Bill Ody, treasurer; artist Gina Blackmore, secretary. The Festival of Light (Diwali) reflects new beginnings and the triumph of good over adversity and the light over darkness. SFCA says the South Fremantle community post COVID-19 shares the Diwali symbolism of the light that signifies purity, goodness, good luck and power. This inaugural festival in 2020 especially symbolises the community emerging from the darkness of the medical pandemic and into the light of survival, hope, love and recovery, it says. It is a festival of shared goodness, humility, tolerance, diversity, togetherness and kindness. The festival draws from a diverse group of musicians, dancers, street artists, food vendors and local businesses including South Beach Hotel, Saroor, Twisted Tulip, South Beach Fish and Chip, Fremantle Sailing Club, Little Loaf, La Cabana, Third Wheel, Sealanes, Running with Thieves and Run Amuk.
