25.01.2022 GREAT LIVE ALBUMS... But NOT Our Favourite.... Megadeth's "In my Darkest Hour Live" (Korean Pressing)!!! What I love about visiting other countries is that you find live albums released only there... Japan is a great country to pick obscure and alternative releases!!! Although Megadeth's In My Darkest Hour (Live) is Korean pressing, I picked it up in Japan... ... Is it a bootleg? On the back cover, it states Korea's Ministry of Culture approved it (if that really means anything).... Ironically, it was recorded in Osaka, Japan, during the Rust in Peace Tour... Is it a bootleg? There is actually an inner sleeve of details... So, if it is bootleg, it is very well presented... But the record actually good.... Admittedly, the recording was not been taken back to a studio to be dubbed to death... but it does captures the band's live sound... What a great tour... we saw Megadeth at the Enmore Theatre during that tour.... I only caught the opening few tracks and the encore (let's not get into that... ) According to Irene, or Mega Girl, who commented on the TOG&TR post (05/02/21), this was the ultimate Megadeth line-up: Mustaine, Ellefson, Friedman and Menza... And it sure is... !!! What a love about this album is it has all the early Megadeth songs that I grew up with... all the Rust in Peace classics such Hangar 18 (though the Korean title is Hanger), Tornado of Souls and the title track, as well as the other mainstays of the setlist such as Peace Sells, Wake Up Dead and... In My Darkest Hour!!! This one is for you, Mega- Girl!!!
22.01.2022 GREAT LIVE ALBUMS... But NOT our FAVOURITE!!! Yes, we are building up to our next episode, Favourite Live Albums, and we have come across some great ones... but they are not our favourites... we can only choose ONE What a great live album U2's Under a Blood Red Sky was!!! Recorded during U2's War Tour, this was U2... young, energetic and they were just rock n rollers!!!!... Released in 1983, it was a regarded as U2's make or break album (despite War enjoying great chart success)... and you can sense this because it is a great live album!!! Only eight songs on the record, and at a discounted price, it was a huge success in Australia... It went to No 2 here and No 1 across the Tasman... So many early U2 songs that I love... whether "Gloria", "I Will Follow" or "New Years Day"... but my favourite was "Party Girl", "Because I Know She Wants More Than a Party"... Because of this record, I went to watch U2 at the Entertainment Centre in 1984... my first concert... The band jumped on with "Gloria" but The Edge's guitar was not on... The band finished the song, with bass, drums and vocals, Bono apologised... and the band began the concert again... Take 2... It is a great live album.... but not my overall favourite... Don't forget to send in a photo of your favourite live album and we will review it...

05.01.2022 GREAT LIVE ALBUMS... But NOT our FAVOURITE So had to choose ONE favourite live album!!!! And what about the Concert of Bangladesh!!!! The first benefit concert of this scale!!! In two years of post Beatles life, it seemed George Harrison could do no wrong... No 1 debut solo (TRIPLE!!!!) album, All Things Must Pass, smash singles, My Sweet Lord and What is LIfe... ... And then, his friend, Ravi Shakar, asked him for help in organising a concert to raise money for Bangladesh's bloody independence's aftermath of hundreds of thousands of refugees. And what a supergroup!!!! Harrison assembled a mighty 24-piece band that included Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, the Apple band Badfinger, a horn section, a seven-piece soul choir, and more. (And all agreed to perform without a fee.) A huuuuge coup was getting Bob Dylan to be part of this momentous occasion!!! So, the album was a triple of album!!!! Beautifully boxed with a special book of photos from the concert... OMG, a photo of Harrison and Dylan singing together!!!! Too many highlights... Harrison's "Something"? Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind" or the duelling guitars of Harrison and Clapton on "While my Guitar Gently Weeps"... history was definitely being written here!!! Admittedly, Ravi Shankar's "Bangla Duhn" sounds as exotic today as when I first listened to it in the early 1980s... What was the impact of the album? Suddenly, the whole world knew of Bangladesh's plight.... the album won the Grammy for Album of the Year... and this was definitely the forerunner for Live Aid so many years later... I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS IS NOT MY FAVOURITE LIVE ALBUM... THIS IS SOOOO GOOD!!!! PS I have no idea why Harrison was never knighted for his huge philanthropy, contributions to music, and film....!!! Don't forget to send us your favourite live album, and we will review it...
