25.01.2022 Hello friends of TWS! Let's talk mental health. It has always been an essential part of self care, but this year has challenged and pushed us all in many new ways and looking after our mental health and well being has never been more important. It is even more challenging if you have a communication or intellectual disability. You might have concerns, questions or thoughts that you struggle to communicate with others. As a communication support partner, you are probably awar...e of these needs. but unsure of where to start these tricky conversations with your AAC user. Black Dog Institute is helping start this tough conversation with their Healthy Mind read easy online tool. Healthy Mind is designed to help people with Intellectual Disability to recognise and regulate their thoughts and feelings through videos and step-by-step online modules. This program has been made to be accessible on a desktop/laptop computer or via a tablet. For more information, or to start the online course visit: https://bit.ly/BDhealthymind Image shows: silhouette of a person with scrambled thought bubble and question marks. Text on image reads: 2020 has been a big year. Is your person who uses AAC feeling overwhelmed, confused or have they been struggling with everything going on? it's okay to not be okay. www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/

23.01.2022 AAC doesn't have to be complicated! Sometimes you need a quick message to use in the moment. Something like this means that you can get your message across quickly and there are a lot more opportunities for interaction. Don't forget you'll have your comprehensive system in case some of those become longer conversations and you need to elaborate!

After a long week you deserve to have some relaxing time with your friends and family in a space wher...e everyone feels safe, included and most importantly is fun. Janelle has made a blog post all about playground communication boards and how to use them, which you can read right here: https://janellesampson.wordpress.com//dont-forget-to-play/ Whatever you decide to do this weekend, remember to enjoy it, that it's okay to get a bit silly sometimes! Life can have its ups and downs - Don't forget to play. Cartoon swings image credited to the talented Marc Johns #TwoWayStreet #CommunicationAccess #TWSWeLoveToTalk

14.01.2022 https://youtu.be/CMm_XL3Ipbo Here is a little video to give you a giggle this Friday, but also hopefully it makes you think as well. Sometimes people say that it's a luxury rather than essential for a person who uses AAC to have a bespoke or personalised synthesised voice. Here's an answer to that in this video! Let's continue to advocate for individualised voices in AAC. #AACAwarenessMonth #TWSWeLoveToChat #AAC #AdvocateForAAC

14.01.2022 If you are currently a TWS client you might have seen our recent email about our StoryTime for AAC sessions. These are run by TWS Speech Pathologists in small online groups for both PODD and Proloquo2Go users. The sessions run for 30 minutes long and are run every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Its a great chance to socialise with others who use your system while having some fun! The speech pathologist will model messages with their system and there are opportunities for ever...yone to have their turn and chat about the story. While the sessions are currently only available for TWS clients, we will soon be making them accessible to others as well. The cost per story session is only $30! Image Shows: A child using their device and a selection of children's books. Storytime: read by a speech pathologist, I use my AAC device to ask questions, chat about the book with others online #TwoWayStreet #VirtualSpeechPathology #StoryTime #TWSWeLoveToChat

08.01.2022 Today we would like to honour the memory of a lovely man who has made an amazing contribution to our field. Bruce Baker was the inventor of Minspeak back when there were no dynamic display devices which was the only way for someone with limited physical ability to access a wide vocabulary. It was a game changer. Bruce also founded the Pittsburgh Employment Conference developing new awareness and learning around employment for augmented communicators. Bruce travelled to Aust...ralia often during my work at Novita and I have fond memories of him singing "this and that and these and those" as he spoke of the importance of core vocabulary. We are all better for the contribution Bruce made to AAC. For those of you who didn't know him but use AAC, chances are that your current system is grounded in much of the work and research that Bruce contributed. Vale Bruce. We will miss you. https://www.isaac-online.org//Press-release-Bruce-R.-Baker https://www.legacy.com//bruce-baker-1943-2020-invented-mi/ Image from https://talksense.weebly.com/minspeak.html

As Janelle says in her blog about talking to kids, "Just because you are not talking to them, it doesnt mean they ...are not hearing things. The power and control for them (and for all of us) is in asking questions and talking about it." Link to blog and chat board is available here: https://janellesampson.wordpress.com//talking-to-kids-abo/ Have a good weekend everyone and take care of each other, Your friends at Two Way Street.
