25.01.2022 History in the making and a great example of how our traditional systems can work with our western systems for the best outcomes for our families. For the first time in Australian history, a standalone bill had been introduced to incorporate traditional lore into official law, recognising the Torres Strait Islander cultural practice of adoption and child rearing

23.01.2022 We have really fond memories of the beautiful Gapan gallery at Garma, and a few pieces in our personal collections.

22.01.2022 #Repost @childrensground with @get_repost Today marks the 13th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) by the General Assembly in 2007. The UNDRIP is the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous peoples - the culmination of more than 20 years of negotiation between First Nations people and governments of the world. It establishes universal guidelines for the survival, dig...nity and wellbeing of First Nations communities tailoring international human rights frameworks to the unique identities of First Nations people. It is a stain on Australia’s human rights record to know that we initially voted against the UNDRIP at the UN General Assembly in 2007. The Australian Government finally announced its support for the Declaration two years later in 2009. The Declaration is particularly significant because Indigenous peoples, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, were involved in its drafting, finally allowing First Nations people a say in the human rights issues that effect their lives. One of our brilliant musicians of @yothuyindi_official fame, a great educator, activist and Australian of the year in 1992. #indigenousexcellence #blakexcellence

02.01.2022 #Repost @reconciliationaus with @get_repost August 9 is the U.N International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is COVID-19 and Indigenous peoples’ resilience. During this pandemic, we have seen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples taking a stand to protect their communities and Elders. Just this week, Mutitjulu residents blocked the entrance of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to protect the community from a potential COVID-19 outbreak.... @theausinstitute reported in July that First Nations peoples had outperformed the rest of the community in preventing the spread of Coronavirus. They praised the fact Aboriginal-led services recognised early that health literacy was just as important as the delivery of health services. This is yet another example of why community control and Indigenous input into policy is integral for protecting Indigenous communities. Today we acknowledge the hard work and resilience of our Indigenous communities to lessen the spread of COVID-19, and the ongoing value of their unique contributions, knowledge and culture. #Resilience #WeAreIndigenous
