25.01.2022 Have you had a peek at the Community Garden lately? It’s packed with butterfly and bee attracting natives and is looking stunning!!

24.01.2022 Have you seen the strawberries planted in a cement stock trough? It was donated because the end had cracked off. We repaired it, put in drains so a small reservoir of water stayed in the bottom for that wicking effect, filled it with potting mix and alpaca poo then planted some plants from Joe’s Connected Garden! They have been going gang busters ever since!

06.01.2022 STRAWBERRY PATCH Many of you have bought strawberries from me in recent years and now is the time to give them a bit of TLC if you want to be feasting in three ...months time. All my varieties throw a lot of runners so if your plants are healthy you will have a tangled mass of plants. There are two ways of doing this: the thorough way and the lazy way but definitely give them a bit of attention to get the best out of them. Commercial growers plant new runners every year as they fruit best in the first year although you can leave for two or three years if you want to. It also depends on how much space you have as if you have only a small patch I would definitely recommend you do the proper job. Dig everything up so you can renovate the soil a bit: add some gypsum(in clay areas), compost, aged manure, blood and bone and potassium sulphate and turn it over a bit and make nice new mounds. Untangle the plants and throw away the originals and cut off the runners and replant them back in the bed. Mulch with pea straw and wait about another month for them to start to grow and flower. Keep the potassium up to them every couple of weeks from August until New Year as this promotes flowering and fruiting. All fruiting and flowering plants benefit form supplementary potassium. If you cannot be bothered to do all this you can just give them a prune and tidy up, getting rid of any damaged leaves etc. You can leave the original plants in if you want to but don’t let the runners go to waste. You can either start a new bed with them or give them away to friends, a Grow Free cart etc. It’s a bit of effort at the worst time of the year to be working outside in the garden but you will be rewarded with much better crops. And apart from making sure they get regular watering during the hot weather, they really don’t need a lot of fuss for the rest of the year. See more
