Using a combination of video, still photography and electro-bricolage, my work highlights the oppressive nature of Instagram and the damages inherent in popular feeds like #fitspiration and #thinspiration to re-assemble a critique that explores the un-realistic level of correction needed to present an acceptable portrait of oneself. 02.01.2022 #Repost @counihangallery Histrionic is our current exhibition featuring Marion Abraham @minminmarion, Saffron Newey @saffron_newey and Tyler Payne @tybetch. Despite our temporary closure, we would like to highlight some of the connections between the works of these artists who are both friends and colleagues. The exhibition deals with the internet and its effects on artistic practice as well as online identity. This interest materialises in the hard surfaces of the ...screen-like Perspex that is used across the work of the three artists. In Saffron Newey’s work, a virulent pink Perspex box encases etched scenes of nature a roiling sea, a tender meeting of horse and hound. Marion Abraham’s fleshy, large-scale paintings are banded with hard strips of the same pink Perspex and the artist-made frames are also made from coloured plastic. Like Newey, Abraham’s paintings are concerned with the history of the artform she trawls the internet for bodies in the historical poses she hopes to depict, surprisingly finding inspiration from body builders, nudist colonies and sport. Tyler Payne appropriates and subverts the marketing materials of Kim Kardashian in her scathing critique of #fitspiration influencers on Instagram. Her suspended iPads are housed in Perspex frames and similarly depict nature specifically the idyllic landscapes that feature in the Kardashian’s high-end advertising campaigns. Here, sexualised female forms are pitted against picturesque beaches and mountain tops that are co-opted to sell whatever vanity product the everyday Instagram user is meant to desire but not attain. #digital #arteveryday #counihangallery #histrionic #doitfortheafterselfie #KIMSPO #Perspex #hotpink #feminism #digitalculture #postinternet See more
