24.01.2022 Being at home more due to the Covid 19 Virus has given us more time on our hands to do more of what we like to do best or try something new. This is what I have been doing more of, something I havent done for many years. This is the second dress I have made and plan to make more. What have you been doing more of? More sleep, more tv watching, more gardening, more of your hobby? Please contribute to this page, with an explanation and a photo, by emailing [email protected]

21.01.2022 Seniors Week goes virtual in 2020 Queensland is changing things up for the 60th anniversary of Seniors Week, with a new format to deliver events. Minister for S...eniors Coralee ORourke said some key changes this year would mean this important event could be celebrated by all Queenslanders, young and old. We were originally looking forward to having an entire month of celebrations in August to mark the 60th anniversary of Seniors Week, but the COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately had an impact on those plans, Mrs ORourke said. As the theme says, we will still be Celebrating Queensland Seniors, with the usual week-long celebration which will take place from 15-23 August. The Palaszczuk Government has been working with the COTA Queensland to get things on track for August. 21.01.2022 Lynette Duffy has been busy recently preparing cakes and puddings for Christmas. She is sharing her delicious family recipe with us. Special Occasion Fruit Cake Lynette Duffy 1 kg mixed dried fruit cup dark rum... 1 tablespoons ginger marmalade (or other type) 250 g butter cup dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 eggs 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 2 cups plain flour 2 tablespoons rum extra Combine fruit and marmalade in a large mixing bowl with rum, set aside while preparing creamed mixture. 100g slivered almonds may be added to the fruit mixture. Almost combine butter & sugar then add the vanilla. Do not cream the butter & sugar or cake will crumble when cut. Add eggs one at a time and combine. Tip creamed mixture into fruit mixture. Add flour & spices to mixture making sure it is combined thoroughly using a wooden spoon or your hand. Put mixture into a tin lined with greaseproof paper. Use a deep square/round cake tin, muffin cups, pudding bowl or other desired shape. Bake in slow oven (150 C) until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean & cake is browned. Remove from oven and immediately brush with extra rum. Cover with aluminium foil while still hot in the tin and wrap in towels to cool. This traps the steam keeping the cake moist. When the cake is cold, remove from the tin and remove all the baking materials. Wrap in clean greaseproof paper and aluminium foil to keep completely airtight. The cake will now keep for months in the pantry in an airtight container. People have also frozen their cooked cake. When using as a pudding (for hot) reheat in microwave for approximately 4 minutes before serving. Notes the longer you let the cake mature the tastier and darker it will become. This is also suitable to use for a plum pudding, you can try changing the rum for port or sherry. Use pure butter as margarine does not have the unique flavour butter has.

20.01.2022 U3A Ipswich & West Moreton philosophy Tutor Eric Boel (also known as the Sage of Woodend) offers these thoughts to start your daily mental awakening: Cherish those who seek the truth but beware of those who find it. Voltaire 1694-1778 Something a little lighter, from a student of his: Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black. Henry Ford 1863-1947

16.01.2022 And while we are on the subject of sewing, those of you who like to sew might like this.

15.01.2022 Some more Old Wives Tales. If you swim within an hour of eating you will get cramp. VERDICT There are no documented cases of anyone getting postprandial cramps and drowning.... Swallowed chewing gum remains in your stomach for seven years. VERDICT In the overwhelming majority of cases, gum swallowed in moderation is usually excreted and does not remain in the stomach. Gum should always be discarded rather than swallowed, but accidentally swallowing gum generally only leads to intestinal problems as a result of excessive consumption.

12.01.2022 What have you been doing more of while spending so much more time at home than usual? Amanda Schloss sent in these photos of a lovely neck warmer she has made. She is obviously a crafty lady!

10.01.2022 Here is another delicious Winter warmer recipe from Lynette Duffy! Vegetable Pie 2 cups Self Raising Flour... 300 ml cream 2 medium carrots grated 1 large zucchini diced 1 medium onion diced 2 tomatoes diced 2 slices short cut bacon 50 g Australian feta cheese In a large bowl, combine the flour and cream to form a stiff dough, knead gently until smooth. Divide into two even portions. Roll the first piece out then place into a greased pie dish. Layer the rest of the ingredients into the pie dish topping finally with the crumbled feta cheese. Roll out the second piece of dough and place on top of the pie pressing the edges together to seal the pie. Cut a cross in the top to allow the steam to escape. Cook in a moderate oven until brown on top approximately 30 minutes. Serve hot. VARIATIONS any combination of fresh or frozen vegetables can be used. Bacon may be replaced with other meat or left out. Feta cheese can be replaced with another style if desired. This is a great way to use up any vegetables that are not looking their best, rather than throwing them away, saves wastage & money.

02.01.2022 Old Wives Tales. Do we believe them or not? Eating carrots helps you see in the dark. VERDICT Eating carrots will only improve your night vision if you are already deficient in Vitamin A.... Feed a cold, starve a fever. VERDICT Evidence that food may have a fleeting effect on a persons immune status is interesting (van den Brink) but a larger scale study is required before any conclusions can be drawn. Eating cheese before bedtime causes nightmares. VERDICT Eating a little cheese before bedtime aids sleep and makes dreams more vivid, but it does not cause nightmares.
