24.01.2022 Sharing Stories with Food Today fifteen members of U3A met at the William Langford Community House for a taste of real Vietnamese cooking, and to hear how our course leader for today, Mrs. Ha Pham came to live in Australia. Ha arrived in here just six years ago and despite her broken English, she did well to tell us how she cooked a meal of Cha Lua (Vietnamese ham) and Bun Bo Hue Noodle. She also talked about her family life back in her native country, and how she, her husband and two children came to settle in Perth. The food was delicious, and everyone really enjoyed the experience. Next month the country we will be visiting on our culinary journey will be Egypt. Anyone wishing to come along will have to register with Sheila. Cost $10.

23.01.2022 Today we held our annual AGM, which was very well attended. To start the proceedings we had a quick talk from Tony Buti MLA, who dropped in to wish us well. Tony was instrumental in us receiving a grant towards the purchase of our new sound system. This was then followed by our President Sheila, who gave us a resume of the past year and finally Val our Treasurer, who brought us up to date with our finances. Before concluding the proceedings with a quiz (thanks Di), we also had a short presentation from Maria of William Langford Community House. Beside having wonderful meals prepared there for our Stories with Food Program, U3A Armadale has formed a partnership with William Langford C.H. Maria also kindly donated vouchers which were issued to all paid up members.

22.01.2022 Tuesday 15 September our guest speaker was Ingrid Sieler, Community Engagement Manger of Perth Natural Resource Management (NRM). This company is a highly regarded for-purpose organisation in the natural resources management (NRM) sector. They collaborate with governments (federal, state and local), community, academics and the corporate sector to deliver solutions to environmental issues. 22.01.2022 Our talk today was given by Leo Kerr, Vice President of Trillion Trees. Leo gave us an insight into the role trees play in the Earth’s ecosystem, bringing home the fact that we all live on spaceship Earth, and without trees, we would not exist. As Trillion Trees say on their website We are a self funding Not for Profit organisation founded in 1979 (formerly known as Men of The Trees). We have planted more than 15 million native trees & understory to improve biodiversity, combat salinity and soil erosion. Members, sponsors, donors, community and corporate volunteers have been part of this important work. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago second best time is RIGHT NOW. Thank you Leo for a very informative talk. Please check out their website at: https://trilliontrees.org.au

22.01.2022 Today our guest speaker was Derek Smith who spoke about the Fairbridge Farm School. Derek is the Vice-President of the Old Fairbridgians Association. He migrated to Australia from the UK as an orphan in 1953 and grew up at Fairbridge. To this day he does not know his real name, age and has only recently be able to track down a sister he didn’t know he had. Derek explained the reasoning behind Fairbridge’s foundation, and the functioning of an institution that was founded in 1913. After the farm closed in 1981, it become a family holiday destination enjoyed by many over the years. https://www.waholidayguide.com.au/fairbridge-village

20.01.2022 Program for October

18.01.2022 Over the past few weeks we have managed to catch up on Richard Offen’s course on the City of Perth, this having been curtailed by Covid. He presents such interesting facts about Perth City in an entertaining manner and with great humour. Richard has agreed to lead a walk in the city at a later date, details of which we’ll inform everyone when it’s settled.

15.01.2022 This month thirteen members met at the William Langford Community House for a taste of Egyptian cooking. Here we heard how our course leader for the day Waffa, along with her husband came to live in Australia and gain employment here some ten years ago. Since arriving they have been blessed with three children. Despite her broken English, she did well to cook us a meal of Koshari, with tomato sauce and Egyptian rice pudding. Our final visit to another country's cuisine will be Thailand on Thursday 12th November. Anyone wishing to come along will have to register with Sheila: 0439 926 333. Cost $10.

13.01.2022 Tuesday 29 September we set off from the Evelyn Gribble Community Centre for a day in the countryside looking for wildflowers. The first stop was Bells Rapids via Brigadoon for morning tea, and a leisurely look at the Avon river. From there we continued our journey via Bullsbrook and the Chittering Valley, where we stopped off to view a selection of wildflowers. This was followed by lunch at the Stringy Bark Restaurant in the Chittering Valley. An excellent lunch. On the retu...rn journey we had another stop to view another selection of wildflowers before returning to Evelyn Gribble. A wonderful day out. Many thanks to Ray and Club 55 for arranging such an interesting trip. See more

09.01.2022 On a sunny Friday 10th October, thirty four members met at the Byford Country Club for a fun bowls morning. We started the day with tea/coffee scones and cream, and then it was down to some serious business. We were told the rules of bowls, and each group was given tuition by two volunteers of the Byford Bowls group. This was very enjoyable, but not to be taken too seriously. After playing for over an hour, a drink and a delicious lunch cooked by the chef of the club was in order. Everyone enjoyed the morning and those who were unable to play were happy to sit and watch, and chat amongst themselves. Some members have expressed an interest in forming a bowls group. Sheila will investigate this and who knows where it will lead us!

04.01.2022 On Melbourne Cup day, U3A Armadale had a fantastic meeting. With lots of snacks and a few bubbles, the membership enjoyed not only the race, but a topical quiz and raffle. To our great surprise we also had an unexpected guest, ‘Champion’ the ‘Wonder Horse’. Fake News had it that he was entered in the Cup but couldn’t get there due to border restrictions, so he gate crashed our event instead! One or two members tried to feed him but it was explained that he had already had his oats! Roy and Ray ran the tote for us, with Roy receiving a suprise gift of a homemade donut - his favourite! Thanks to the Committee and helpers for arranging a great morning and terrific fun.

04.01.2022 Today was the last day of our six week Be Connected computer course. Judging by the faces, everyone enjoyed the experience and hopefully came away with a little more knowledge of the digital age. Well done to all the participants, and you’ll be pleased to know I’m looking forward to running another course early next year for those who missed out. If you would like to try the Be Connected course for yourself, please go to https://beconnected.esafety.gov.au
