25.01.2022 Lots of things are keeping Ted and Bruni optimistic.

25.01.2022 The Hills Hub Pen Pal Project started in August 2020 and connected over 190 people within the Hills community throughout COVID-19 lockdowns. This week, 160 of t...hose pen pals gathered (over 3 COVIDSafe sessions) at the Hills Hub to meet for the very first time! The project, which was funded by Council’s COVID-19 Community Connection Grant program and the Emerald Village Association, matched an older person in the Hills with a Grade 3 to 6 Emerald Primary School student to write and exchange letters during lockdown. Participants were encouraged to write to their pen pal about their life and interests, as well as their experiences of growing up and living in the Hills. On Tuesday, Pen Pals met in person and made Christmas decorations together for the Hills Hub Christmas tree. Pen Pals spoke of numerous project benefits including reduced feelings of isolation and loneliness, mutual support and encouragement, stronger community connections and promoting kindness during what has been a difficult year. Well done to everyone involved! For more information about the Hills Hub, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/hillshub. 25.01.2022 Current Affairs practising face to face social distancing and Zooming. Nobody has to miss out.

25.01.2022 We are slowly heading back to the Hub as restrictions continue to ease. Our members belong to one of the vulnerable groups in the community, so we are being VERY careful. We are working to offer a hybrid model of presentation when possible - a combination of face to face plus Zoom for those not yet ready to leave home. We don't want anyone to miss out. Keep an eye out in your email for information from your tutor. There are very strict rules about how many we can have in each room at the Hub, so this will have to be a staggered return, with small groups first.

24.01.2022 Many people are finding the lockdown and their anxiety about the virus difficult to handle. On this web page you will find videos and tips to help you cope. https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/mental-health-resources-coronav

24.01.2022 Our U3A has been successful in obtaining grant money via the Cardinia COVID 19 Community Connections Grant. We will be purchasing a video camera, tripod, SD cards and spare battery to add further enriching technology to our U3A offerings. Thanks to our Hub Placemaker Ellen Prior and our U3A Photography tutor Paul Bianco for doing all the hard work.

23.01.2022 Forget politics. Forget COVID. This view from my deck feeds my soul. What lifts your spirits?

19.01.2022 We all need to wear masks from midnight tonight. I know many of us have already begin to wear them ahead of the deadline. Here is some important advice from U3A Network about the right way to wear a single use mask. You can adapt the advice if you are wearing a reusable one. How do I wear a mask correctly? (surgical mask - single use) Before putting on the mask, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or use a hand sanitiser that is made up of o...ver 60% alcohol. Check for defects in the mask, such as tears or broken loops. Position the coloured side of the mask outward. If present, make sure the metallic strip is at the top of the mask and positioned against the bridge of your nose. If the mask has: o Ear loops: Hold the mask by both ear loops and place one loop over each ear. o Ties: Hold the mask by the upper strings. Tie the upper strings in a secure bow near the crown of your head. Tie the bottom strings securely in a bow near the nape of your neck. o Dual elastic bands: Pull the bottom band over your head and position it against the nape of your neck. Pull the top band over your head and position it against the crown of your head Mould the bendable metallic upper strip to the shape of your nose by pinching and pressing down on it with your fingers. Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin. Be sure the mask fits snugly. Don’t touch the mask once in position. If the mask gets soiled or damp, replace it with a new one. What’s the best way to take off a face mask? Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser containing at least 60% alcohol. Don’t touch the front of the mask or your face. Carefully remove your mask by grasping the ear loops or untying the ties. For masks with a pair of ties, unfasten the bottom one first, then the top one. If your mask has filters, remove them and throw them away. Fold the mask and put it directly into the laundry or into a disposable or washable bag for laundering. Single use surgical masks should be disposed of responsibly. Clean your hands again. The most up to date information, including FAQs about face coverings, is available on the Victorian coronavirus website.

19.01.2022 Some of our members have been missing out on emails from U3A because they end up in their spam folders. Please check your spam folder from time to time to make sure you are not missing out.

19.01.2022 Margaret's bottle brush brings her happiness every time she sees it.

14.01.2022 Emerald Library is conducting a survey and would like responses by the 13th of September. Have your say here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CommunitySurvey2020Aug

13.01.2022 We will soon have a COVID testing facility at the Hub. Please be patient as everything is put in place. We have very low numbers of infections in Cardinia and Yarra Ranges. This will help to keep it this way.

11.01.2022 Well done Emerald. I know some of our U3A members have been offered this opportunity.

08.01.2022 The COVID Two Step has us back where we were. The Hub will be closing at midnight tonight - Wednesday 8th July. But that hasn't deterred many of our resourceful tutors and members who are continuing their courses using Zoom, email and phone calls. There has been a lot of disruption and we haven't been able to do as much as we planned or as much as we wanted to do. We have decided, therefore, that all our 2020 memberships will continue for 2021. That means that if you have paid your 2020 membership subscription, you will not have to pay again for 2021. Yippee!

06.01.2022 The Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association has some interesting Zoom sessions coming up in September and October. The September one will be looking at the setting up of a community energy hub, and in October you can hear about the King Island trials of wave power. To find out more go to http://www.drrea.org.au/whatson.html

05.01.2022 Are you wondering where to go to get information that you can trust about the COVID 19 virus? This Department of Health and Human Services web page provides a wealth of information. https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-public-coronavirus-di

03.01.2022 Good news if you are running short of things to read.
