16.01.2022 In celebrating NAIDOC week, we're happy to introduce our newest committee member, Tiahni Jade Adamson who graduated with a B.Sc. in Wildlife Conservation Biolog...y earlier this year. She is currently a Fisheries Compliance Support Officer at PIRSA and has had active roles as an Indigenous Education Officer (CSIRO), Marine Biology cadet, Academic tutor, mentor and student ambassador at The University of Adelaide. On her Father’s side Tiahni's family are Torres Strait Islanders with connections to Thursday Island, but live on Larrakia soil. On her Mother’s side, they have recently found family ties to Amata, APY Lands and are currently in the process of learning more about her family history and connecting with relatives on these lands. She has grown up living and learning culture on Palm Island, Nukunu, Nawu and Kaurna soil. Tiahni joined the SAN committee to foster mentorship with graduates and like-minded professionals as it has been critical to the success of her education and career. Having strong cultural connections as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, while working in conservation; protecting sea country, puts her in a unique position to bring forward a background of knowledge that perhaps has not been tapped into before. Tiahni is involved with the Senior Management Council’s Aboriginal Affairs Executive Committee, the Uluru Statement from the Heart Youth Dialogue, Reconciliation Action Plan Committee, First Nations Led Sea Country Working Committee, and fight for Indigenous land rights and self-determination through community engagement, education and public speaking. On days when she's not hard at work, you'll find her diving, swimming, boating, sailing, surfing, camping, hiking, riding her bike, travelling, dancing, yoga, cooking, tending to plants and animals, and activities related to mindfulness. Be sure to say hello if you see Tiahni around!
