03.01.2022 Is your sunscreen doing more harm than good? There are two types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging and other light-induced effects of aging and UVB the chief culprit behind sunburn.... In order to select the best sunscreen, it is important to make sure that the ingredients in the sunscreen is skin friendly. There are 2 different types of sun protection Physical (contains zinc and titanium dioxide); and Chemical (contains oxybenzone and avobenzone). Physical sunscreens create a physical barrier on top of the skin, therefor the sun reflects off the skin. The beauty about a physical sunscreen is that: The minerals itself is quite inflammatory The UVA rays never get to penetrate into the skin It provides great protection against UVA and UVB without causing any damage Chemical sunscreens soak into the tissues of the skin and when the UVA light comes through, the particles of a chemical sunscreen absorb the UV radiation within the skin and disperse. This causes a lot of heat within the skin, but most worryingly is that it creates a lot of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules which can cause a lot of damage to healthy skin cells within the deeper layers of the skin. We also need to be aware of the difference between a 30+SPF and 50+SPF. There is no significant difference in protection between the two sun protection factors. A 30+SPF will offer you 97.3% protection against UV radiation, whereas with the 50+SPF the protection is 97.8%. It is possible to create a physical sunblock with a 30+SPF, but in order to achieve a 50+SPF, it is necessary to use chemical sunblock ingredients. Therefor always select the 30+SPF with zinc or titanium dioxide.
