01.01.2022 On workplace conflict: Research relating to conflict management continue to show that goal incompatibility is likely to result in increased levels of conflict within (but not limited to) workplace settings. Therefore, establishing a common vision or goal is paramount to an organisations’ well-being as not only is it likely to result in workplace harmony but also higher performance outcomes. Alarmingly, however, goal incompatibility within groups still appears to be a probl...ematic area for many organisation's today and it is perhaps for this reason that current studies around conflict management conclude that conflict is an inevitable phenomenon within work teams. It also appears that over time the ‘teamwork’ approach has become synonymous with the concept of goal setting. The problem with this is that it gives very little room for subordinates and delegates within teams to question the true value of teamwork when goal setting is required. The solution is simple (but not always easy to implement). It all comes down to effective workplace conflict management. So here are just a few of our tips for dealing with workplace conflict: Communicate Listen without interrupting Show empathy Present your point of view Explain how you feel Negotiate: Brainstorm possible solutions Accept the need for compromise Choose the fairest solution Implement your plan Consolidate: Evaluate your plan Communicate your feeling Want to know more about effective workplace conflict management and how conflict can actually benefit your team?
