25.01.2022 More big news from Tigerland. The club has entered 6 team in the EVCA for the upcoming season. Along with divisions 1 and 2 we will have 4 teams (including our history-making women’s team) spread across the lower divisions. This will make us the biggest open age club in the region for 20/21. To assist in shouldering the work, we have appointed Brod Williams as assistant coach to Joe and vice captain to Harry.... As you all know, Brod made an instant impression at United with his T20 heroics. He also made some handy contributions in the two dayers. Along with an abundance of talent and cricket knowledge, Brod brings with him his wife Tegan, soon to be three children and his father Geoff (sorry if it’s Jeff). More exciting news to come during the week.

23.01.2022 Part 3 of the quiz answers. Tonight we’re talking about something very close to our tiger hearts- success. We won 2 Matting flags (32% got this right, the next most popular answer was all of them with 30%). We beat Emu Creek in our first EVCA grand final, there’s a great write up about this coming (36%).... In the past 40 years we’ve missed Div 1 finals 3 times (25%). Shane Hartney captained 6 Div 1 flags (25%). Keiran Nihill has won the most club champions (48%). We’ve won just the 3 limited overs comps (26%). Cass Patten is our inaugural women’s captain (49%). Glen Taig won the best club person, not the first and won’t be the last (51%). The photo makes us think of success.

22.01.2022 Once upon a time (last season), on the eve of round 1 selection, a cunning seconds captain by the name of Rob, quietly slid a new name onto the magnet board, that name was Misha. Being a fairly unique given name, a few of the wise old selectors enquired as to whether this was the same Misha of great sporting prowess that they had heard of. As all good seconds captains do, Rob played down both Misha’s ability and availability. Misha therefore found himself at home in the sec...onds. From that moment on the pair were inseparable. Rob captained the seconds premiership with his main man (and star batsman) Misha by his side. They say no man is an island. Rob tried to be for quite some time. When the suggestion of vice captaincy was raised, it was dismissed by Rob- Misha knows he’s my right hand man, we don’t need to have labels. However, as happens in all the best romcoms, the magic moment occurred at the 11th hour. With the plane of Rd1 ready for take off, and with Misha packed and ready to board, Rob came running through the Facebook messenger airport typing- Misha! Be my vice!. The rest is history.

22.01.2022 While we spend a lot of time celebrating our on field success, this is due to our off field heroes. I’m recent weeks we’ve completed 3 projects - 1. New timber chairs for the uBar. 2. Not only 1 but 2 new flagpoles bringing our total to 3.... 3. Installation of solar panels at Ewing Park. A big thank you goes to our committee (especially Watty, Glenn, Dennis and Shane) for arranging these projects. However, as has been pointed out many times before, the playing group should be proud of these achievements as they wouldn’t be possible without the 100% amateur status of our players.

22.01.2022 Tigers, Cricket scores are about as interesting as watching grass grow which, as a club, we’ve done plenty of over the past few months. Needless to say the club had a successful weekend overall. Brod Williams got a great century and new player Jon Bryers got five wickets. Nice starts by both men.... One of my frustrations, and as I get older these are becoming more numerous, is why do we wear coloured clothing and use white balls for EVCA cricket? If someone can come up with at least half a valid reason, you will certainly assist my well being. On the topic of coloured shirts I did like Spring Gully’s new outfit - simple but classy. It’s great to see a sports outfit without cartoon caricatures which seem to been in vogue over the past years. It upset me greatly when the famous two blue Eaglehawk Football Club jumper was adorned with what looks like a bird just before it hits the windscreen of a car. Of course some possibly don’t like the Tigers outfit, and that’s fine. We know we’re not perfect! We must also congratulate Cogho for the work he put into getting his new side on the field. An initiative that offers lots of positives for all. Well done. We won’t even criticise whatever shirts this team comes up with. Great turnout at the UBar on Saturday night, with all social distancing protocols enforced. It is wonderful to be back to a semblance of normality. Keep at em Tigers. EDITOR’S NOTE- This isn’t a dig at Spring Gully’s current strip. The writer’s eyesight is failing and he had to be advised that Spring Gully’s shirt does have a cartoon bird on it. Nevertheless, he seemed to like the way it looked from 130m.

22.01.2022 Ryan ‘heart and soul of United’ Currie has found his right hand man for 20/21. Dale Holmes (in at-least his 15th season at United) will be Ryan’s vice captain. Along with being a lower-grade legend of the EVCA, Dale has also played in a number of Eastern-European premier leagues.... Dale has successfully predicted many world events over the past decade and we’re hoping that this foresight will translate into field placements and bowling changes. Good luck boys.

22.01.2022 As announced last week, the Tigers are entering an impressive 6 teams in the EVCA. To do so, we needed someone to join Harry, Rob, Ryan, Geoff and Cass as a captain. Jordan Norris is our man. Jordy joined the Tigers last season and had a pretty good year in the twos. Prior to this, he spent a fair bit of time in the Castlemaine comp. ... Jordy bats well, bowls a bit and is a popular member of the club. Onya Jordy, all the best for the year.

21.01.2022 Around the Traps with the Tigers Volume 2 Maiden Gully Marist ... Not much news. Still playing a lot of golf. Maybe the Castlemaine league has some sort of golf component to their points system? Also, they’ve have been training at Cal Gully for some reason. A real more questions than answers type arrangement. Marong Running online Friday night raffles. Really like the idea. We would pinch it, but with our previous public stance on plagiarism, we’ve made a rod for our own back. Spring Gully Foxy is closely approaching the ever elusive 12 minute 3k. We’re tipping this means he’s going to be extending his run up this season. Also has been hitting the weights hard, or just taking photos on a few plates on a bench and putting the pics on socials. Time will tell. Saheed ‘Zinger’ Akolade is back at the nest. Hopefully it’s 3rd time lucky. It’s actually perfect timing, Dooly has finally recovered from the skull fracture he acquired from head butting one to mid off in the semi a couple of years ago. Its still unclear if Zing is going to adopt the business at the front party at the back ‘Do like the rest of their recruits. Speaking of new Crows, we might be losing our minds, but we vaguely remember another recruit being announced a while ago, a spinner from C’Maine/M’Borough. Can’t see them on social media anymore. Might be looking too far into it, also might not be. #timetofly United Bit happening at Tigerland. Dools and TC had birthdays this week. Congrats to Mac and Taylah on their expected arrival. The club has also purchased new stools for the Ubar. The quiz is still open. We’re approaching 50 responses and some of them aren’t from Shane. If you’ve got 5 minutes give it a go! West Bendigo Appointed 2 new vice captains and put forward a motion to the league AGM to allow players to wear black shoes. You wouldn’t think these two things would be related, but it’s not impossible.

21.01.2022 How bloody good is this? Our number one ticket holder (and number 23 batsman) Ric McIntosh has been immortalized at his beloved Warrnambool. Despite Sportsbet taking the credit, this was funded by the members of the UCC. If you’ve ever listened to the tips of a tiger, you’ll know how many donations we’ve made to SB over the years! If you’ve got a spare minute or two treat yourself to Ric’s call of the concluding stages of the last today. It was a ripper!

20.01.2022 Quiz answers part 4. This one deserves its own post as it was one of our closest. How do you wear your pads? About 40% of you wear them like Michael ‘Mr Cricket’ Hussey (Velcro ends facing in, to avoid the ball clipping them and being mistaken for an edge).... The remaining 60% of you were wrong and wear them like Michael Clarke (with the Velcro ends facing out, reducing the risk of the ends catching when running between wickets). The debate continues.

19.01.2022 Thanks to all who entered the Tigers Super Quiz. We’ll provide the answers and commentary over the coming weeks. We have discovered more than half of you don’t know how to put on batting pads correctly.... There’s got to be winners and losers. We had 52 entries so there’s 51 losers. Here’s the winner and the 3 that lost the least. Our winner is Harold Hartney scoring 21/25 which is a fair effort for a dog. Harold will enjoy whatever the prize is, if he is able to pick up the phone and call Shane in the next 48hrs. 20/25- Sally Oakes, this one makes more sense as Sally has been at the club for as long as anyone, it’s where she first met club president Shane. Tying for 3rd are club legends Keiran Nihill and Brendan Hartney with 19/25. Unsurprisingly they both got the question about the club BNFs correct. Well done to all.

19.01.2022 Strap yourselves in for a history lesson Tigers. Here’s part one of the quiz answers. 26% of you were correct in saying Maranatha were our last matting opponent before joining the EVCA in 85/86(38%). When we got to the EVCA we played West Bendigo (34%) first up. Eventually we started a second division with Peter Smart being the inaugural captain (25%). A rich part of our history is our connection to the Sandhurst Footy club. Pictured here is a Dragons’ footy trip from the 80s. There’s plenty of tigers there, how many can you spot?

16.01.2022 http://www.quiz-maker.com/QO9LJ2G6 Click the link to enter the official (accept no imitations) UCC super quiz! The quiz is open for one week. 25 multiple choice questions. 10 minutes to answer. Are you the most knowledgeable Tiger?... Shane has put together a special prize pack from the locked merchandise cupboard! Enjoy.

16.01.2022 Tigers win 4/5 today. We gave the crows a couple of hidings in the 1s and 2s. You only have to beat what you’re up against. One of our boys got his second consecutive not out hundred against the crows.... As a great man once said- If you don’t know, now you know -Brod Biggie Williams

16.01.2022 Happy birthday to club coach Joe Hartney who today clocks up 27 (the same amount he went for in his country week over). To celebrate we’re re-releasing his first go at a Tik-Tok. Apparently it was a hit in China. Keep an eye on the Facebook page. We’ve got another decent comp coming up this week.

15.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. We’ve dug up this gem from the archives. Fathers v Sons from roughly ten years ago. We’re tipping the sons in a current day rematch.

14.01.2022 Tigers, It is with a touch of disappointment and some sadness we learn that rival club Maiden Gully is leaving our association. Our two clubs aren’t that different. While Maiden Gully Marist make their catholic alliance clear for all to see in their name, UCC comes from a similar place. It’s a little know fact that during the 80’s United was a Catholic’s only club. Things probably went a bit far when Shane started personally baptizing recruits, but it was a different time.... Our club's had a fierce but respectful rivalry in the 1990s when both clubs were at the top of the ladder, with the Gully actually defeating the Tigers in a grand final. Unfortunately the Gully couldn't sustain the on field success like the Tiges, but whenever the clubs played it was always a tough encounter. In recent times the clubs also took the unusual approach of hitting the trade table. A successful deal was brokered which saw United part with allrounders Hickman and Purtill and welcome batsman Brod Williams and inaugural women’s captain Cass Patten. The Maiden Gully club has always been a mainstay of the Emu Valley, producing some really good players, and being one of the clubs that endevoured to field as many sides as they could in all divisions. In recent years they developed a women's side, testament to their comittment to developing cricket in Bendigo. Back in the old days they referred to their ground as the "Home of Cricket". With the wonderful development of Ewing Park (including the fully sick skate park based on the one out the back of Lords), we think that this title is now ours! The Tigers wish them all the best with their new journey.

13.01.2022 24hrs to go in the quiz. Check out the leaderboard at- http://www.quiz-maker.com/leaderboardQO9LJ2G6 This is still well and truly up for grabs as I'm pretty sure "Harold Hartney" is a pomeranian and will have some difficulties in claiming the prize.

12.01.2022 Welcome back to Tigerland James Smith. The Dawg Father returns after a short break and we couldn’t be happier to have him back. His CV includes-... +15/16 Div 1 Premiership player with the Tigers + Captained a Div 1 game a couple of years ago + Lives with TC + Missed a straight one on 199 for @bulls__nationn Welcome back Smithy.

12.01.2022 Sick of the Tigers winning everything

09.01.2022 We’re probably on the look out for a graphic designer and a reliable statistician too.

09.01.2022 Not only have they got a new name, our Div 3(1) United Gold team has a new leadership group. Experienced campaigner Geoff O’Sullivan will captain the side for a second season but he will have a late start. In his absence, Ash Mayo will be captain and Tyler James will be vice. Mayo and TJ experienced success in the Tigers’ t20 championship win last season.... Geoff’s late start is due to a rare medical condition that Geoff is going to enormous lengths to overcome. Geoff has been inspirational in his recovery on the road to making his comeback to cricket, not only has he been running the team, he’s also been signing sponsors for the club! What a man! Good luck lads.

09.01.2022 There’s a huge game tomorrow for the Richard Tambling/Des Gilmore/Rick McIntosh Trophy. There’s been a terrific rivalry between the United and our protégés Spring Gully. Last time Spring Gully made a funny joke about our uniforms, and we won $1k and the t20 championship, so we’ll call that a draw.... Unfortunately for fans, they will only be witnessing a watered-down contest with the Crows missing star batsman Rhys Webb and opening bowler Saheed Akolade. This has been offset by United missing all rounder Paddy Hartney who bats as well as he bowls. So the outs are really 6 of one half a dozen of the other. If you’re out and about here’s where you can catch the Tigers: Div 1 v Spring Gully @ Epsom Plains 1pm Div 2 v Spring Gully @ the Spring Gully Swamp 1pm Div 3(1) Gold (Geoff’s crew) v Marong @ the Marong Harness Club 1pm Div 3(1) (Jordy’s boys) v Mandurang @ St Frank of the Paddock 1pm Div 3(2) (Cuz’s Army) v Cal Gully @ Eaglehawk Medium Security High School 1pm Go Tiges

08.01.2022 With cricket season just around the corner, now is the time to be on the right side of history. Sign up the the Tigers. Contact Cass for more info!

08.01.2022 United, I assume most of you are aware that Geoff O’Sullivan passed away yesterday. This is extremely sad news for all. Geoff came to the club two years ago, but brought with him a whole squad of players. This is an illustration of his popularity, and he was highly respected as a person, club member and cricketer. Geoff was not a passive member of ours or any club. He was the type of person who put his hand up to take on tasks to improve the club and ensure that things were ...done properly. His organisational skills were of the highest caliber. He was an astute and caring skipper who’s philosophy was always to ensure that everyone was given an opportunity. The club will be the poorer for his passing. We offer sincere sympathies to Jordan and the O’Sullivan family. Geoff’s funeral is next Friday at the All Season’s at one o’clock. It would be great to see as many club members there as possible. See more

08.01.2022 As promised, here’s the story of our first EVCA flag United, having defeated Maranatha CC in the Bendigo Matting Cricket Association grand final, sought to transfer to the EVCA for the 1985-86 season. The club wanted to put more sides onto the field and have a home base. After much controversy the council allowed the club to have Ewing Park as it home, after the club promised to develop the facilities there. United played their first game against West Bendigo on the turf at B...achus Oval. The West’s were lead by present EVCA president, Ron Gray. The Tigers won and went through to Christmas undefeated, also beating reigning champions Emu Creek (who had a talented side I still regard as one of the best I’ve seen over the years). After Christmas, unfortunately the wheels fell off. We lost every game until the last game at Ewing Park against Sedgwick, when a win would put us back into the finals. We had a shocking start but a last wicket stand of 158 by star Ewan Humphries and the talented Phil Walsh who was sent to number 11 for disciplinary reasons, got us through. The semi saw us pitted against Arnold St CC, another side who had left the matting comp before us (and there was some history between the clubs). In a nasty encounter we won, which meant we were up against raging favourite Emu Creek in the final at their home ground. No one gave the Tigers a chance. Their number five bat even said after the game he didn’t think he would need to bat as their list was so strong! Tigers bowled them out for just over 100. A win for the ages, and we went through the next season undefeated premiers and so our story in the EVCA had begun. #flagfriday

08.01.2022 Evening Tigers, Part 2 of the quiz answers- fun facts (obscure rubbish we couldn’t categorize) 1. We pinched our colors from WA cricket (28% correct).... 2. Matt Dwyer composed the Tigers’ song (60%). 3. Phil White built the UBar with 2 thumbs and 7.5 fingers (57%). 4. The mother of United, Judith, won the Tattersalls Award (47%). 5. Brendan Walsh barracks for the Hawks (64%, about the same as the lead they gave up last night). 6. You’ll find Tommy’s Bar (named after long time barman Tom Walsh) downstairs (49%). 7. The Ewing Park rubbing track is blue and white (68%). 8. If you hit a six to the Mundy St end it’s found it’s way onto Stonemans roof (57%). 9. Burger King was on on the roof (23%). 10. Cam Davie mankad Cain Ladiges (36%). 11. You can pick up in venue TAB specials from the phone box (26%). 12. Conjuncti Stamus loosely translates to United we stand (73%). If you’ve made it this far, here’s an equally random photo that was sent in by a fan. We’re told it’s from a White-Night circa 2015. Can’t wait to do it again.

07.01.2022 Bendigo Addy Sport looking after us again. Treat yourself to a subscription, it’s worth every cent. Most importantly, while we think our cricket is pretty important, it’s not going to feature in the Herald Sun anytime soon. Support those who support us.

06.01.2022 DIV 1 2/140 def SGCC 9/139 DIV 2 3/106 def SGCC 102 DIV 3(1) 105 def ManCC 35 DIV 3(1) Gold 119 def by MarCC 8/139 DIV 3(2) 2/101 def CGCC 90... Stay tuned for the match report tomorrow.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to long term player Lachlan Shawyer and future player Bess Shawyer (formerly Jones) who got married on the weekend. After postponing their April wedding, the couple decided to tie the knot in a private ceremony over the weekend. The club is forever grateful for this gesture. Less thoughtful club members actually have weddings on Saturdays in summer, thus decimating our playing stocks. Not Shelmer though, the ultimate clubman kept it to parents only, and even ...better, in July. As a player Sharma has a very underrated CV. He’s played A grade finals, won a Bash for Cash premiership as well as a B grade flag this year. A left arm quick who has obviously spent a lot of time watching Mitch Johnson circa Ashes 13/14 highlights, Lachlan currently sits at number 15 on the all time wickets list, one place ahead of Harry Whittle...but also one place behind Ryan Currie. An ambitious batsman, he will enter the top 100 run scorers in the upcoming season, and on current numbers should also find his way into the top 10 for ducks. We look forward to seeing what Bess brings to the cricket pitch next year. Congratulations Shawyers!

05.01.2022 Huge news out of Tiger Land this weekend with some big announcements by a couple of flagsmen. Congratulations to Troy Young and Jamie on their engagement. Brod and Tegan Williams have also announced they are expecting their third child. Kicking goals on and off field boys!

05.01.2022 Welcome to United Liam Oberin. As you can see from Tongala’s comment on his clearance, we’re expecting big things on and off field.

04.01.2022 Why do players come to United? One could present a strong case for social development, prestige, success, a realignment of one’s moral compass, business contacts, or even for religious reasons. Another factor, if you have football aspirations, is the Tigers success in developing AFL footballers. Let’s look at our products. Tony Barnes 7 games with Melbourne, Brendan Hartney 32 games with Carlton, Michael Lenaghan 22 games with Geelong, Frank Coghlan 109 games with St Kilda,... Andrew Collins 36 games. All of the above rate their premiership successes with United far above making their mark on the football stage. Presently we have Fergus Greene at Footscray, who hopes to make his mark back at the Tigers when his playing days are over. Steve Hando and Dennis O’Connor tasted VFL Twos experience, whilst many cannot forget Seb Greene’s stint as a Bendigo Bomber. Ryan Currie is rumoured to have made it to the last cut at the Geelong Falcons as a top age player. He was 28. So, when thinking of which EVCA club to join, the Tigers can promise that your path to glory in football is so much smoother if you trod the one that leaves Ewing Park.

03.01.2022 Here we go again Tigers, Rd1 is this Saturday with 5 of our 6 sides taking the field in the EVCA. How good are the rooms looking with our new Gadsden Finance signs? Almost as good as the new home you buy after Gaddo and the team sort a mortgage out for you!

03.01.2022 EVCA is kicking off on 31 October 2020. The tigers have a dream draw playing Sedgwick, West Bendigo, Axe Creek, Marong, Emu Creek, Mandurang, Spring Gully and Cal Gully twice. We’ve also been given the green light to start training. To top off a big week, our very own Tiger King, Harry Exotic clocked up 25 years of age today. We don’t claps halves so we don’t like your chances of getting a clap for a quarter H.

02.01.2022 More good news from Tigerland. We’re stoked to announce we’ve appointed Ajay Mishra as vice captain to Jordan Norris in our new side. Ajay is a great bloke around the club. This hasn’t gone unnoticed, he’s won both the best clubman and the most ducks trophies. He’s possibly the only bloke to win both, Cuz or Whitey may have too. Here’s the type of fella Ajay is:... + he never misses the optional training session. + if the a grade need a fielder, he’s the first to put up his hand. + if he wins the cash in the social club raffle he donates it back. + he makes club legend Nihilly look tall in photos. What a man!

02.01.2022 The club is very pleased to announce that Stage 2 of the Ewing Park master plan has been funded through the foresight and generosity of the Victorian state government. Local member Jacinta Allan was on hand with other dignitaries at Ewing Park today to declare the almost $3 million grant. The development will see a range of physical activity hubs based around the creek end of our ground. This is a great team effort on behalf of the user groups, City of Greater Bendigo and the... Dan Andrews government. In other news, the club has paid to have the lights on between 6-8 over winter to allow for more public use of this beautiful facility.

02.01.2022 Recruit Alert The match committee identified a big hole in our list and have acted promptly. Last year we went into finals with TC as our only genuine ruckman. He was supported by Dools coming up from full forward and Freddy Ryan pinch hitting from the wing. The selectors even got a bit funky late in the piece, promoting Josh Mould from the 3s as some back up for finals.... We are pleased to announce the giant signings of giants Connor Toohey and Adrian Holland. Both have terrific CVs. Connor played in Newbridge’s 2018 flag and last season Adrian was a member of Pyramid Hill’s most successful team since the 50s. They’re both welcome additions to Tigerland. We know Adrian has played a heap of Div 1 BDCA, and we were pleasantly surprised that Connor’s MyCricket ID references Northern Rivers. Good luck boys.
