The role itself hasn’t changed that much, it's more the innovative approach we have had to take due to the pandemic. Our communication strategy also had to adapt in all of our channels to reflect the needs of our customers. We invested time and energy in reviewing analytics and market research to understand what has worked for us so far and what we could improve according to new findings.... How do you see the pandemic effecting the industry long-term? The commercial industry had a massive shift in recent times and I see no other option rather than adapting to those changes, new products have been developed to cater to specific needs and changes to the workplace. Long-term I see a need for reconfiguration of existing spaces and creative, safe ways of socialising within the workspace. What must businesses do to stay relevant during this time? In my opinion, the most important thing to do now is to listen to our clients and potential customers and understand what their needs are. What we see as important might not be what the market requires. Creating elements to be more effective and relevant to the market is the way to move forward.

COVID has greatly affected the workplace environment for many, with working from home now a common phrase among most of our video call or socially distanced catch ups. With predictions for the future now so uncertain, workplace culture will constantly be adapting to become more flexible to prepare for the unexpected. ... How has your role changed during COVID? We have been communicating through video calls with our design community to catch up on life during COVID and to show our new product range, virtually rather than face-to-face. Its been a really interesting experience to be able to talk to designers in this new way and discuss emerging workplace trends as we prepare ourselves to assist and contribute to a new era of workplace design. How has UCIs Product range adapted during COVID? UCIs product development has been exponential over the past 8 months. Nationally, UCI have banded together with regular team meetings to discuss potential new products and compare feedback on emerging solutions between each office. 12.01.2022 UCI In Focus: Steve Chadband How have you seen the industry change since the covid-19 pandemic, and how have these changes effected your role at UCI? The pandemic has left the industry largely fractured with the demand for office fit-outs significantly reduced. Although things within Australia are beginning to feel somewhat normal again, I believe demand for office furniture will continue to fluctuate with remote working becoming a permanent trend that will impact industry d...emand long-term. On a personal level, this disruption has forced me to explore new avenues for the business to generate revenue and unearth new opportunities to replace what we have lost in our traditional market. This has seen new product innovations such as the CUSafe screen and antimicrobial desk sleeve, as well as encouraged us to focus more time and energy into the e-commerce arm of the business. How will it affect the industry long-term? There will be many long-term effects on the industry however I believe the biggest change will be the level of involvement from clients on projects and fit-outs. Offices of the future will no longer act as just a meeting place but will be based around collaboration and become a bigger part of our lifestyles. Ultimately, this will give the clients more power and more engagement into how their office is designed and how it works for them. All stakeholders involved in the process will need to learn to be more accommodating to the client’s needs to ensure they are achieving a personalised result.

02.01.2022 UCI In Focus: Paul Gibson What is your role at UCI? My job title here at UCI manufacturing is an R&D technician. ... A portion of my time is spent redesigning existing parts, streamlining the manufacturing process and making it more cost effective to mass produce. I enjoy the new product concepts too, having recently designed the electric and fixed height flip desks. Im lucky enough to be able to sit at my desk and design, and then go into the workshop and manufacture that idea. Seeing an idea through to a final product is very satisfying. How has Covid impacted your reality? Covid has definitely had a substantial impact across the globe. People and businesses alike have been evolving at a rapid rate to overcome new obstacles. I like to look for the positives where possible so I have been pleased to see that more local companies have had the opportunity to look closer to home, to see the great work capabilities and product range we have to offer here in Australia.
