07.01.2022 The past two years have seen a difficult time for both the sport of Gridiron in the ACT and for the University of Canberra Firebirds as a club. Continuing decreases in player numbers across the sport, increases in league individual registration fees, decreases in the number of scheduled games, decreases in the number of teams in all divisions, bushfires in and around the region, and all the changes to Australian life COVID-19 brought have made these past two years some of the... most difficult for our club in a long time. During 2019, the University of Canberra announced the streamlining of all their University funded sports under the one united banner, the "UC Stars". Many discussions were had by our committee in consultation with many of the former club executive members, team staff and players. Ultimately a unanimous decision was made to continue operating under the umbrella of the University of Canberra that has allowed the club to grow and evolve into one of the elder clubs in the sport in this country and remain the only Foundation club for ACT Gridiron still operating. While part of this will involve moving forward from the Firebirds team name that has been used since the club’s inception in 1993 and adopting the new team name of the Stars, it is seen as a chance to mark the steps into a new era of the club in joining the growth of the University of Canberra as a hub of sporting excellence. In mid-2019 the ACTG Executive was approached to advise of these coming changes along with the associated implications and the decision made that the club would enter a team registration for both the UC Firebirds and the UC Stars for 2019 (while waiting for the University to finalise their announcement of this enterprise) with the intention of entering the UC Stars in the 2020 ACT Senior competition. With the impact of the societal changes driven by COVID-19 leading to the club not submitting a Senior team in 2020 it was decided to postpone this announcement until after the 2020 Junior season had been completed. With the seasons for 2020 having now drawn to a close, we are proud to announce to our club members, the ACT Gridiron community, and the wider public this change and mark the start of the UC STARS as our ongoing team name in all competitions that the club competes in. While there is some sadness in moving forward from the Firebirds name and logo as our main club identifier, it will still be a part of the club in many ways from featuring on jerseys to remember the history of the club, to the Firebirds branch of the club’s Hall of Fame that celebrates those that made the club what it is today.
